The ECNASAP Pilot Project consists of inshore and offshore case studies, and is a cooperative effort among several U.S. and Canadian agencies. Digital map and data products are being developed in the Offshore Case Study for groundfish, seabirds, temperature, salinity, and sediments. This report summarizes the initial results for the groundfish component. About Partitioning the Total Mortality of Atlantic Cod Stocks Project In 1995, Canada's Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) initiated a series of research projects to address high priority issues for the Atlantic and Pacific coasts. The Cod Mortality Project is a component of this effort; its objective is to assess the main causes for the decline of cod resources since the mid-1980s. A subproject is to examine long-term changes in groundfish assemblages on a biogeographic scale, and to determine whether or not these changes coincided with changes in ocean climate. -

Head moderate to large, 37 to 49% of standard length. Eyes small to moderate, 8 to 12% of standard length. Snout 8 to 13% of standard length. Mouth moderate to large, upper jaw 12 to 21% of standard length. Numerous small conical teeth present on upper and lower jaws, none on vomer or palatines. Lacrimal movable, with 2 spines, posteriormost largest directed ven- trally. All species with a narrow extension of the third infrarobital bone (second suborbital) extending backward and downward across the cheek and usually firmly bound to preopercle.No postorbital bones. Branchiostegal rays 7. Skin over gill covers strongly fused to isthmus. Dorsal fin with VII or VIII (rarely VI) short spines and 12 to 14 branched soft rays. Anal fin usually with II short spines, followed by 11 or 12 branched soft rays. Caudal fin rounded, never forked. Pelvic fins small, difficult to see, with I stout spine and 2 or 3 (rarely 1) rays. Pectoral fins with 14 or 15 thickened rays. Scales absent, except for lateral line, but body densely covered with tubercles. Lateral-line scales present; usually 11 to 19 tubed scales. All species possess extrinsic striated swimbladder musculature. Vertebrae 24. Colour: orbicular velvetfish are either pale pinkish white with numerous small black spots, or light brown or greenish and with orange spots or reticulations. Habitat, biology, and fisheries: Velvetfishes live within the branches of Acropora, Poecillopora, and Stylophora corals, rarely venturing far from the coral head. -

Laguna de Tamiahua is ecologically and economically important as a nursery area that favours the recruitment of species that sustain traditional fisheries. It has been studied previously, though not throughout its whole area, and considering the variety of habitats that sustain these fisheries, as well as an increase in population growth that impacts the system. The objectives of this study were to present an updated list of fish species, data on special status, new records, commercial importance, dominance, density, ecotic position, and the spatial and temporal distribution of species in the lagoon, together with a comparison of Tamiahua with 14 other Gulf of Mexico lagoons. Materials and methods. Fish were collected in August and December 1996 with a Renfro beam net and an otter trawl from different habitats throughout the lagoon. The species were identified, classified in relation to special status, new records, commercial importance, density, dominance, ecotic position, and spatial distribution patterns. -

The three-fold increase in the total num- ber of species covered in the current compilation is the result of both a larger study area and a recent increase in published ontogenetic studies of fishes by many authors and students of the morphology of early stages of marine fishes. It is a tribute to the efforts of those authors that the ontogeny of greater than 70% of species known from the western North Atlantic Ocean is now well described. Phylogeny of the Epinephelinae (Teleostei: Serranidae)
BULLETIN OF MARINE SCIENCE, 52(1): 240-283, 1993 PHYLOGENY OF THE EPINEPHELINAE (TELEOSTEI: SERRANIDAE) Carole C. Baldwin and G. David Johnson ABSTRACT Relationships among epinepheline genera are investigated based on cladistic analysis of larval and adult morphology. Five monophyletic tribes are delineated, and relationships among tribes and among genera of the tribe Grammistini are hypothesized. Generic com- position of tribes differs from Johnson's (1983) classification only in the allocation of Je- boehlkia to the tribe Grammistini rather than the Liopropomini. Despite the presence of the skin toxin grammistin in the Diploprionini and Grammistini, we consider the latter to be the sister group of the Liopropomini. This hypothesis is based, in part, on previously un- recognized larval features. Larval morphology also provides evidence of monophyly of the subfamily Epinephelinae, the clade comprising all epinepheline tribes except Niphonini, and the tribe Grammistini. Larval features provide the only evidence of a monophyletic Epine- phelini and a monophyletic clade comprising the Diploprionini, Liopropomini and Gram- mistini; identification of larvae of more epinephelines is needed to test those hypotheses. Within the tribe Grammistini, we propose that Jeboehlkia gladifer is the sister group of a natural assemblage comprising the former pseudogrammid genera (Aporops, Pseudogramma and Suttonia). The "soapfishes" (Grammistes, Grammistops, Pogonoperca and Rypticus) are not monophyletic, but form a series of sequential sister groups to Jeboehlkia, Aporops, Pseu- dogramma and Suttonia (the closest of these being Grammistops, followed by Rypticus, then Grammistes plus Pogonoperca). The absence in adult Jeboehlkia of several derived features shared by Grammistops, Aporops, Pseudogramma and Suttonia is incongruous with our hypothesis but may be attributable to paedomorphosis. -

FOREWORD Abundant fish and wildlife, unbroken coastal vistas, miles of scenic rivers, swamps and mountains open to exploration, and well-tended forests and fields…these resources enhance the quality of life that makes South Carolina a place people want to call home. We know our state’s natural resources are a primary reason that individuals and businesses choose to locate here. They are drawn to the high quality natural resources that South Carolinians love and appreciate. The quality of our state’s natural resources is no accident. It is the result of hard work and sound stewardship on the part of many citizens and agencies. The 20th century brought many changes to South Carolina; some of these changes had devastating results to the land. However, people rose to the challenge of restoring our resources. Over the past several decades, deer, wood duck and wild turkey populations have been restored, striped bass populations have recovered, the bald eagle has returned and more than half a million acres of wildlife habitat has been conserved. We in South Carolina are particularly proud of our accomplishments as we prepare to celebrate, in 2006, the 100th anniversary of game and fish law enforcement and management by the state of South Carolina. Since its inception, the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources (SCDNR) has undergone several reorganizations and name changes; however, more has changed in this state than the department’s name. According to the US Census Bureau, the South Carolina’s population has almost doubled since 1950 and the majority of our citizens now live in urban areas. -

Important components of the jetty fauna during its initial stages of development were: (a) original residents that exhibit some attraction to reef habitats, including some sand-beach inhabitants, several pelagic species, and a few ubiquitous estuarine species; and (b) reef fishes originating from permanent populations on offshore reefs. -
