STUDY OF GERMAN LANGUAGE AND GERMAN-LANGUAGE CULTURE The department provides language instruction to enable the student to acquire all four linguistic skills: understanding, speaking, reading, and writing. German 101-W-102 stresses communicative competence and covers German grammar in full. German 103 combines a review of grammar with extensive practice in reading and conversation. German 104 aims to develop facility in speaking, writing, and reading. German 120 is a compactintensive communicative German course that strives to cover two semesters of the language in one. German 201 emphasizes accuracy and idiomatic expression in speaking and writing. German 202 combines advanced language study with the examination of topics in German-speaking cultures. Each year the department offers upper-level courses treating various topics from the German-language intellectual, cultural, and social world in which reading, discussion and writing are in German. Students who have studied German in secondary school should take the placement test given during First Days in September to determine which course to take. STUDY ABROAD The department strongly encourages students who wish to attain fluency in German to spend a semester or year studying in Germany or Austria, either independently or in one of several approved foreign study programs. German 104 or the equivalent is the minimum requirement for junior-year abroad programs sponsored by American institutions. Students who wish to enroll directly in a German-speaking university should complete at least 201 or the equivalent. -

Through spatial analysis the negotiation between the unresolvable bind of a stable national and personal identity and of a flexible transnational identity are discussed. Russian, German, and Croatian writers, specifically Olga Mukhina, Nina Sadur, Monika Maron, Barbara Honigmann, Angela Krauß, Vedrana Rudan, Dubravka Ugrešić, and Slavenka Drakulić, provide the material for an examination of the proliferation of female writers and the potential for recuperative literary techniques after 1989. Volume 9 & 10, WINTER 2018/19 TITLE BORDERS & REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS PAST Wladimir Kaminer and Jewish identity in ‘Multikulti’ Germany Joseph Cronin Queen Mary University of London Abstract ladimir Kaminer has become something of a poster-boy for the ‘Kontingentflüchtlinge W [Quota Refugees]’, the term applied to Jews from the former Soviet Union who immigrated to Germany between 1990 and 2006, as a result of a decision made first by the GDR and then adopted by the reunified Federal Republic. Kaminer writes little about his Jewishness in his work, but, in his first book, Russendisko (2000), he discusses the Jewish identity of Russian-speaking Jews living in Germany, viewed through the lens of Multikulti [multicultural] Berlin. Kaminer depicts them as just another of Germany’s ethnic minority groups and, as such, nothing special. Given both Germany’s past and the reasons offered by the German government for allowing these Jews to emigrate in the first place, Kaminer’s opinion is undoubtedly controversial. This article investigates how and why Kaminer adopts this position. It examines the pre-migration experiences of Jews from the former Soviet Union, which include: antisemitism, attitudes towards religion and discourse about the Holocaust in the Soviet Union, as well as the experiences (more unique to Kaminer) of Berlin in the 1990s, the heyday of multicultural optimism. Although Kaminer is an unusual case study who deliberately subverts the reader’s expectations of his identity politics, this article aims to show that his writings on Russian-speaking Jews, while highly subjective, have a wider application than might first appear. -

Cambridge University Press 978-0-521-70019-1 - The Cambridge Companion to Gunter Grass Edited by Stuart Taberner Excerpt More information STUART TABERNER Introduction Just as the idea for this volume was being developed for the Cambridge Companion series in the summer of 2006 the dramatic news broke that Gu¨ nter Grass, the internationally renowned, Nobel prize-winning author who was to be its subject, had admitted for the first time in public that he had been a member, aged seventeen, of the Waffen SS, the elite German army organisation notorious for its fanatical obedience to Hitler and its prominent role in Nazi atrocities. In Germany, Grass’s critics rushed to denounce what they saw as his hypocrisy (after all, he had long been lecturing his compatriots on the need to confront their past openly), with conservative journalist and newspaper editor Joachim Fest memorably commenting that he would not buy a used car from ‘this man’, while his supporters leaped to his defence, claiming that his revelation, overdue though it might be, by no means invalidated more than half a century of vigorous campaigning for the embedding of democratic values in the post- fascist Federal Republic, Grass’s unrelenting concern with the Nazi period in his literary works as far back as the publication of The Tin Drum in 1959, or his untiring agitation for freedom and human rights across the globe. Internationally, Grass’s fellow authors mostly stood up for an esteemed colleague, pointing not only to his record of political activism and social engagement on causes ranging from environmentalism and the Third World to racism and social exclusion but also to the breadth of his achievements as a writer, poet, dramatist, artist and essayist. -

We are going to read short stories by male and female German-speaking authors during expressionism, the time before and after WWII and stories written in East and West Germany after the war. Many of these short stories deal with the Nazi time and the different political implications, namely how these texts reflect on life under socialism and capitalism. German unification and its results as well as the situation of minorities in Germany will give a broad overview on contemporary society.
