The University of Toronto GERMAN LITERATURE II: EPOCHS/GENRES GER 305H / Fall 2019 Instructor: EROL M BORAN Dept: German Office: Odette Hall #309 Email: [email protected] Hours: M 10-12 Tel.: 416-926-2317 Class meets on M 1-3 at VC 206 & W 1-2 at VC 304 DESCRIPTION Building on GER 205H (“German Literature I: Working Methods”), this course takes you on a journey back through time through various periods of German literature starting in the present and concluding in the era of the Weimar Classic. We analyze representative works of major writers such as Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, Friedrich Schiller, Heinrich Heine, Franz Kafka, Bertolt Brecht, Christa Wolf, Zafer Şenocak and Jenny Erpenbeck. We look at different genres and periods, prominent authors, and ideas/movements that have shaped German-language literature. Approaching the texts through close reading and contextualization (broader historical and cultural perspectives), students learn to read critically and to consider the literary qualities of the German language. The course aims at teaching you to critically approach and assess progressively more complex literary texts in the German language to prepare you for advanced literature courses on the 4xx-level. Sessions involve class discussions, group work, readings, and lectures. Students are expected prepare all assigned texts before the scheduled session. Active participation is required throughout the course, absences will be penalized. All readings, assignments and discussions are in German; a genuine effort to communicate in German is expected. Note: GER 305H is a prerequisite course for 400-level literature courses. Not vergessen, sondern Erinnerung ist unsere forgetting, but remembering is our Aufgabe... duty… (Heinrich Böll, Das Vermächtnis) Course description: This course provides an overview of German literature, film, and culture since 1945, with a focus on the topic of memory. German culture after 1945 has been preoccupied by the memory of war, National Socialism, and the Holocaust; debates among historians are front-page news, particularly the Historians’ Debate of the 1980s and the Goldhagen debate of the 90s. Literature and film have been important vehicles for the process of Vergangenheitsbewältigung, or coming to terms with the past, and we will discuss texts that both portray and perform acts of memory. We will examine various strategies of remembering and memorializing the past, always asking what the significance of memory is for the present and future. Furthermore, we will examine a range of memory cultures, considering memories of the 1950s “economic miracle,” the 60s student movement and 70s radicalism, and the GDR and its demise, all of which coexist (and compete) with memories of the war and the Holocaust in the same cultural space. No expertise in spoken or written German is required for participation in the course. However, students majoring in German will be expected to read texts in the original German. -

Juli Zeh Other People [Unterleuten] Outline + Sample Translation Literary Fiction Luchterhand 640 pages March 2016 It looks as if Linda, who is only ever called the "horse woman", has found paradise for herself and her stallion Bergamotte. Unspoiled countryside, a romantic cottage and endless space in the little village of Unterleuten promise to be an idyll. The peaceful life goes out of joint when an investment company decides to erect a wind park close by. Meiler, a city real estate speculator spoilt by and used to success, and Gombrowski, a farmer owning a large estate, are both willing to provide the necessary land for the project so as to cash in on the subsidies to the tune of a few million euros. The only rub is that the land of the two gentlemen is just a few square meters too small. The missing plot is on Linda's property of all places, which she sees as her big opportunity of making her dream of setting up her own stud farm come true. While she is skilfully manipulating the two men and playing them one against the other, Gombrowski's archenemy Kron, a crutch-wielding one-time Communist and hard-boiled troublemaker, does all he can to prevent the wind park being built. It is not long before jealousy and greed, craftiness and intrigues lead to all hell breaking loose in Unterleuten. With a keen feel for all that is human and a subtle sense of humour, the author gradually exposes the true nature of her protagonists, thus making even the apparently noblest of motives seem dubious. -

Literatur, Politik&Biographie aus unserer Nachbarschaft Lesungen 2017: Lesung über Gottfried Benn Autoren-Leseabend mit Holger Hof am Dienstag, 4. April 2017, 19.00 Uhr, Wahlkreisbüro Gottfried Benn (1886-1956) gilt als einer der bedeutendsten Dichter der literarischen Moderne des 20. Jahrhunderts. Er schrieb Gedichte, Dramen, Erzählungen und Essays. Besonders bekannt sind seine Gedichtbände (z. B. „Fleisch“ 1917), die stark expressionistisch geprägt sind. Benn hat neben seiner literarischen Tätigkeit immer auch als Arzt gearbeitet. Seit 1904 lebte Benn (mit einigen Unterbrechungen) in Berlin, von 1937 bis zu seinem Tod 1956 befand sich seine Wohnung mit der Arztpraxis in der Bozener Straße 20 in Schöneberg (nah an der Grenze zu Wilmersdorf). Den Gottfried-Benn-Abend gestaltet Holger Hof. Er lebt als freier Autor in Berlin und gilt als einer der kompetentesten Benn-Experten. Über Benn hat er u.a. eine Biografie geschrieben und eine Bildbiografie erstellt, zudem hat er den Briefwechsel mit Ernst Jünger herausgegeben. Über die Lese-Reihe: Der Berliner Westen, von der Kantstraße bis zum Bayerischen Platz, war vor allem in der Weimarer Republik die bevorzugte Wohngegend von Berliner Literaten. Viele Autorinnen und Autoren, die schon berühmt waren oder später berühmt wurden, haben hier gewohnt. Zu nennen sind vor allem Gottfried Benn, Walter Benjamin, Heinrich Mann, Else Lasker-Schüler, Anna Seghers, Kurt Tucholsky und Else Ury. Sie alle wohnten in Wilmersdorf oder Charlottenburg. STUDY OF GERMAN LANGUAGE AND GERMAN-LANGUAGE CULTURE The department provides language instruction to enable the student to acquire all four linguistic skills: understanding, speaking, reading, and writing. German 101-W-102 stresses communicative competence and covers German grammar in full. German 103 combines a review of grammar with extensive practice in reading and conversation. German 104 aims to develop facility in speaking, writing, and reading. German 120 is a compactintensive communicative German course that strives to cover two semesters of the language in one. German 201 emphasizes accuracy and idiomatic expression in speaking and writing. German 202 combines advanced language study with the examination of topics in German-speaking cultures. Each year the department offers upper-level courses treating various topics from the German-language intellectual, cultural, and social world in which reading, discussion and writing are in German. Students who have studied German in secondary school should take the placement test given during First Days in September to determine which course to take. STUDY ABROAD The department strongly encourages students who wish to attain fluency in German to spend a semester or year studying in Germany or Austria, either independently or in one of several approved foreign study programs. German 104 or the equivalent is the minimum requirement for junior-year abroad programs sponsored by American institutions. Students who wish to enroll directly in a German-speaking university should complete at least 201 or the equivalent. -

“THE DOUBLE BIND” OF 1989: REINTERPRETING SPACE, PLACE, AND IDENTITY IN POSTCOMMUNIST WOMEN’S LITERATURE BY JESSICA LYNN WIENHOLD-BROKISH DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Comparative Literature in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2010 Urbana, Illinois Doctorial Committee: Associate Professor Lilya Kaganovsky, Chair; Director of Research Professor Nancy Blake Professor Harriet Murav Associate Professor Anke Pinkert Abstract This dissertation is a comparative, cross-cultural exploration of identity construction after 1989 as it pertains to narrative setting and the creation of literary place in postcommunist women’s literature. Through spatial analysis the negotiation between the unresolvable bind of a stable national and personal identity and of a flexible transnational identity are discussed. Russian, German, and Croatian writers, specifically Olga Mukhina, Nina Sadur, Monika Maron, Barbara Honigmann, Angela Krauß, Vedrana Rudan, Dubravka Ugrešić, and Slavenka Drakulić, provide the material for an examination of the proliferation of female writers and the potential for recuperative literary techniques after 1989. Volume 9 & 10, WINTER 2018/19 TITLE BORDERS & REMEMBRANCE OF THINGS PAST Wladimir Kaminer and Jewish identity in ‘Multikulti’ Germany Joseph Cronin Queen Mary University of London Abstract ladimir Kaminer has become something of a poster-boy for the ‘Kontingentflüchtlinge W [Quota Refugees]’, the term applied to Jews from the former Soviet Union who immigrated to Germany between 1990 and 2006, as a result of a decision made first by the GDR and then adopted by the reunified Federal Republic. Kaminer writes little about his Jewishness in his work, but, in his first book, Russendisko (2000), he discusses the Jewish identity of Russian-speaking Jews living in Germany, viewed through the lens of Multikulti [multicultural] Berlin. Kaminer depicts them as just another of Germany’s ethnic minority groups and, as such, nothing special. Given both Germany’s past and the reasons offered by the German government for allowing these Jews to emigrate in the first place, Kaminer’s opinion is undoubtedly controversial. This article investigates how and why Kaminer adopts this position. It examines the pre-migration experiences of Jews from the former Soviet Union, which include: antisemitism, attitudes towards religion and discourse about the Holocaust in the Soviet Union, as well as the experiences (more unique to Kaminer) of Berlin in the 1990s, the heyday of multicultural optimism. Although Kaminer is an unusual case study who deliberately subverts the reader’s expectations of his identity politics, this article aims to show that his writings on Russian-speaking Jews, while highly subjective, have a wider application than might first appear. -
