Karen Lewis Dear St. Elizabeth friends, In our passage last week, the question Jesus asked his disciples at Caesarea PhilippiNbut who do you say that I amNbrought back a flood of memories of my time in during , 2000. I think most of us, in reflecting on our own lives, can point to moments or events where we felt the presence of God’s grace. Perhaps the evening prayer ser- vice with John Paul II in the rolling hill country just outside the Eternal City with 3 million other pilgrims was one of the defining moments of my life. The Pope began his homily with the question Jesus asked, “but who do you say that I am.” He challenged us to answer the question for ourselves. During the vigil service, I remember standing on high ground looking around me in all directions. A sea of humanity encamped on the hills as far as the eyes could see. The Pope was just a small speck on a stage far off in the distance. I was able to make my way through the multitudes to the fence that surrounded the stage area. Per- haps I was the length of a couple of football fields from the Pope. Several of us M all from different countries were taking turns looking through the small fence opening. I remember asking one young man why he had come. He told me in broken English that he was from Yugoslavia and had risked his life traveling through his wartorn country, amid a brutal civil war because he wanted to see the Pope. And he wanted to get to know Jesus more closely so that he could better serve his neighbors and his Church. I learned a valuable lesson that night from John Paul II’s homily and from that young man. To answer the question for myself, I had to go beyond just studying the dogma and doctrine of the Church. I needed to get to know Jesus better by spending time with him, like I would with any good friend, though prayer, study of scrip- ture and the Eucharist. I also learned I could seek the answer to this question by looking for the wounded Christ in the faces of those in need, and then by being the face of Christ in helping the vulnerable and marginalized. Last weekend, I discovered a newly ordained priest, Fr. Stephen Fichter, was also in Rome and probably one of the specks I could see on stage while looking through the fence to see Pope John Paul II. After last Saturday night, we reminisced about our shared experience and the theme song of World Youth Day that re- mained ingrained in our minds and hearts 20 years later. The opening lyrics I think provide all of us guidance on how to begin to answer the question. On the horizon a great light dawns And travels throughout the history Conquering darkness through the years Living in our memory Giving light to our way Clearly revealing Seek the truth and we shall find If we seek the truth, we shall find the same answer that Peter, the fisherman from Galilee, so boldly pro- claimed two millennia ago, you are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Peace and blessings! Deacon Andy NEWS AND EVENTS

Sometimes you want to be selfish and keep every- thing for yourself. This is not what Jesus did. He kept sharing God's love all the time. He shared so much that he even gave his life for us by dying on the cross. Jesus wants us to share like he did, to give of ourselves even when we want to be selfish. Prayer Heavenly Father, give me strength to share your love. Something to Draw Draw a picture of yourself sharing in way that is hard for you. Mission for the Week Give of your time this week to help someone who needs it.
