It unites all Aboriginal Women from across the Island representing many Aboriginal nations, sometimes spanning three or four generations. Since 1986, it has continued to build and strengthen aboriginal women from across Prince Edward Island in accordance with the vision: "Stronger Women Create Stronger Communities". AWAPEI is also our connection to the voice at the National level with our membership to Native Women's Association of Canada. The membership gives Aboriginal Women many other opportunities, and a chance to share in the voice on a National level in Canada. Founded in 1971 as the Native Council of Canada (NCC), the organization was originally established to represent the interests of Métis and non-status Indians. Reorganized and renamed in 1993, CAP has extended its constituency to include all off-reserve status and non-status Indians, Métis and Southern Inuit Aboriginal Peoples, and serves as the national voice for its provincial and territorial affiliate organizations. They are a not for profit safe haven for First Nation women and children who are experiencing domestic violence; physical, sexual, emotional, mental, spiritual and financial. Gignoo, which means “our house” services all First Nation women and children, who are either on or off reserve, by helping them start their path to healing and eliminate the cycle of violence. Listuguj Haven House Phone: (418) 788-5544 http://www.listugujhavenhouse.ca Haven House is a native women’s shelter, a safe place, a refuge, for women and their children dealing with family violence. They provide a safe and comfortable place to stay for a limited time in crisis situations as well as counselling and emotional support. Haven House also provides information and referrals on legal aid, Social Services, police and other community resources. The Society strives to provide all services and programs in a context that acknowledges the rich artistic and spiritual traditions of our people, so as to facilitate cultural knowledge transfer in an urban aboriginal environment. Their goal is to operate and administer a strong and effective Aboriginal Peoples Representative Organization that serves, advocates and represents our community. NCPEI is the self governing authority for all off-reserve Aboriginal people living on Epekwitk (PEI). NWSM offer support and frontline services to First Nations, Inuit and Métis (Aboriginal) women and children to promote their empowerment and independence. The NWSM is the only women’s shelter in Montreal that provides services exclusively to Aboriginal women and their children. Their members are widely dispersed throughout the Province of New Brunswick in villages, towns, cities, and rural areas. They are people of Aboriginal Ancestry for whom NBAPC provides services, programs, and a political voice for their concerns. With some 24,000 members spread across many communities both on the island and abroad, Qalipu is one of the largest First Nation groups in Canada.
