“VIEWPOINTS” ON RECONCILIATION: INDIGENOUS PERSPECTIVES FOR POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION IN THE SOUTHERN INTERIOR OF BC 2020 Project Synopsis By Christopher Horsethief, PhD, Dallas Good Water, MA, Harron Hall, BA, Jessica Morin, MA, Michele Morin, BSW, Roy Pogorzelski, MA September 1, 2020 Research Funded by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada. Executive Summary This research project synopsis presents diverse Indigenous community perspectives regarding the efforts needed to enable systemic change toward reconciliation within a public post-secondary educational institution in the Southern Interior of British Columbia. The main research question for this project was “How does a community college respectfully engage in reconciliation through education with the First Nations and Métis communities in the traditional territories in which it operates?” This research was realized by a team of six Indigenous researchers, representing distinct Indigenous groups within the region. It offers Indigenous perspectives, insights, and recommendations that can help guide post-secondary education toward systemic change. This research project was Indigenous led within an Indigenous research paradigm and done in collaboration with multiple communities throughout the Southern Interior region of British Columbia. E. PHELAN, 2331 St. Catherine Street, lVIontreal HISTORY HE history of Montreal as a centre of population commences with the visit of Jacques Cartier to the Indians of the town of Hochelaga in 1535. The place was situated close to T Mount Royal, on a site a short distance from the front of the McGill College Grounds, and all within less than a block below Sherbrooke Street, at Mansfie1.d Street. It was a circular palisaded Huron-Iroquois strong hold, which had been in existence for seyeral generations and had been founded by a party which had broken off in some manner from the Huron nations at Lake Huron, at a period estimated to be somewhere about 1400. It was at that time the dominant town of the entire Lower St. Lawrence Valley, and apparently also of Lake Champlain, in both of which quarters numerous settlements of the same race had sprung from it as a centre. Cartier describes how he found it in the following words: " And in the midst of those fields is situated and fixed the said town of Hochelaga, near and joining a mountain which is in its neighbour hood, well tilled and exceedingly fertile; therefrom one sees very far. -

Lee and Barry Edmonston Department of Sociology and Population Research Group University of Victoria Victoria, BC, Canada Abstract In ethnically diverse societies such as Australia, Canada, and the United States, ethnic population trends are understandably of great interest. Recently, there is a growing trend towards identifying with a national ethnicity or ancestry, such as “Australian” in Australia, “Canadian” in Canada, and “American” in the United States. The 1996 Canadian census showed that 29 percent of the population reported “Canadian” ethnic origin, a proportion that increased to 37 percent in the 2001 census. In Australia, 38 percent of the population reported their ancestry as “Australian” in the 2001 census, an increase from 24 percent in 1986. And in the United States, 9 percent of the population reported “American” ancestry in the 2000 Census compared with 6 percent in 1990.
