Seeschlachten im Atlantik (Zusammenfassung) U-Boot-Krieg (aus Wikipedia) 07_48/U 995 vom Typ VII C/41, der meistgebauten U-Boot-Klasse im Zweiten Weltkrieg Als U-Boot-Krieg (auch "Unterseebootkrieg") werden Kampfhandlungen zur See bezeichnet, bei denen U-Boote eingesetzt werden, um feindliche Kriegs- und Frachtschiffe zu versenken. Die Bezeichnung "uneingeschränkter U-Boot-Krieg" wird verwendet, wenn Schiffe ohne vorherige Warnung angegriffen werden. Der Einsatz von U-Booten wandelte sich im Laufe der Zeit vom taktischen Blockadebrecher zum strategischen Blockademittel im Rahmen eines Handelskrieges. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg änderte sich die grundsätzliche Einsatzdoktrin durch die Entwicklung von Raketen tragenden Atom- U-Booten, die als Träger von Kernwaffen eine permanente Bedrohung über den maritimen Bereich hinaus darstellen. Im Gegensatz zum Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg fand hier keine völkerrechtliche Weiterentwicklung zum Einsatz von U-Booten statt. Der Begriff wird besonders auf den Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg bezogen. Hierbei sind auch völkerrechtliche Rahmenbedingungen von Bedeutung. Anfänge Während des Amerikanischen Bürgerkrieges wurden 1864 mehrere handgetriebene U-Boote gebaut. Am 17. Februar 1864 versenkte die C.S.S. H. L. Hunley durch eine Sprengladung das Kriegsschiff USS Housatonic der Nordstaaten. Es gab 5 Tote auf dem versenkten Schiff. Die Hunley gilt somit als erstes U-Boot der Welt, das ein anderes Schiff zerstört hat. Das U-Boot wurde allerdings bei dem Angriff auf die Housatonic durch die Detonation schwer beschädigt und sank, wobei auch seine achtköpfige Besatzung getötet wurde. Auftrag der Hunley war die Brechung der Blockade des Südstaatenhafens Charleston durch die Nordstaaten. Erster Weltkrieg Die technische Entwicklung der U-Boote bis zum Beginn des Ersten Weltkrieges beschreibt ein Boot, das durch Dampf-, Benzin-, Diesel- oder Petroleummaschinen über Wasser und durch batteriegetriebene Elektromotoren unter Wasser angetrieben wurde. -

1 HIST’S SIXTY YEARS OF SPONSORED PUBLICATIONS: AN EXPANDED 2 BIBLIOGRAPHY 3 Mary Virginia Orna ([email protected]) 4 5 INTRODUCTION 6 For sixty years, the Division of the History of Chemistry (HIST) has sponsored publications 7 of history-related volumes drawn for the most part from symposia that were presented at 8 American Chemical Society (ACS) meetings. The origin of each volume depended upon 9 individuals who organized symposia, or in some cases, proposed book volumes. It has been 10 the practice of the Division to provide some financial support for these ventures; many 11 organizers were able to obtain additional support from various types of grants and 12 contributions. Generally, the editor of the volume was also the organizer of the event. Except 13 for the Archaeological Chemistry volumes, there were no set series or themes over the years, 14 but the volumes naturally fell into the six categories given in the Outline and Overview of 15 this article. 16 Since this paper has as its goal a permanent record of this HIST-initiated activity, 17 each volume will be highlighted with a re-publication of parts of its Preface and if warranted, 18 some additional information on the contents of the volume. Since a large percentage of the 19 volumes’ contents (titles and abstracts of papers) can be found on the ACS website, 20 [www.acs.org/publications], they will not be repeated here but a link to the volume on the 21 ACS website will be provided. However, several volumes were published elsewhere, and 22 even some volumes published by the ACS have no presence on its website. -

There will also be plenty of speculoos and massepain oranges and apples. Just thinking of the expectations, the fears and joys make us long for the holiday atmosphere of “the old country”. Then come the family reunions of Christmas, the joys of being together and sharing the blessings of the holidays. The New Year too brings special traditions, where the chi1dren will read their specially prepared “New Years Letters”: one for the parents, one for the grandparents and one for their godparents, who each will give them a few francs or a special present The children have worked hard on these letters, wilting them using their most beautiful handwriting and vocabulary! New Year too is the time for resolutions, decisions and promises. Decisions… promises… we asked you last year to help us raise the number of our membership to 400. We are delighted to let you know that we gave membership number to the last subscriber. Thanks and congratulations to you all! We want to do even better for 1993 and hope to reach or pass the 500 mark by the end of the year. With your continuous support, we should be able to do just that. The more we are the more we can help each other. -

The Red Star Line and Jewish Immigrants
Saturday August 6, 2011 - Congregation for Humanistic Judaism – Unity Church, Sarasota THE RED STAR LINE Introduction There is no business than Sarasota business. It’s not from Irving Berlin, it’s my own interpretation. It is even not a quote, it is just what happened to me the previous years. By the way, Irving Berlin is one of the many who came to the United States with the Red Star Line from Antwerp. So, I am sincerely pleased to have been invited once again to Sarasota, a city which I am very fond of for many different reasons, both professional as private. I am even more moved because I found here a witness to a story that is very close to my heart. It is very close to my job as vice mayor for culture and tourism in the city of Antwerp as well. What I am referring to is the history of the Red Star Line shipping company and of immigration to the USA. We are opening a new museum on this topic next year in Antwerp: the Red Star Line|People on the Move museum. “The fact that we got out of Germany and then out of Antwerp, in the very last year that Red Star Line was running ships from Antwerp to the United States, was overwhelming” This is a quote from an interview we were able to make last year in Sarasota with Ms. Sonia Pressman Fuentes. Sonia and her parents and brother were among the many families that emigrated to the USA via Antwerp on a Red Star Line ship. -

Like its inventor and near-namesake, the Belgian American chemist Leo Baekeland, Bakelite became a household name around the middle of the twentieth century. Marketed as “the material of a thousand uses,” it quickly outpaced its original function as a substitute for shellac and its first technical applications in the electrical and automobile industries. Suitable for the fabrication of everything from radios and cameras to buttons and billiard balls, Bakelite was naturalized as a quintessentially modern material. And while many other scientists and entrepreneurs contributed to the meteoric rise of the plastics industry, it was Baekeland who, in the 1930s, earned the exaggerated and enduring epithet “father of plastics.” In Beyond Bakelite, Joris Mercelis works to denaturalize these myths of technological inevitability and innovative genius by retracing Bakelite’s invention and commercialization. In the process, he identifies interdependencies between scientists and businessmen, who increasingly worked together over the course of the twentieth century to produce, patent, and profit from new materials and productive technologies. -

The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) serves as a Scientific, international, non-gov- ernmental and objective body in addressing the global issues involving the chemical sciences.
