Seeschlachten im Atlantik (Zusammenfassung) U-Boot-Krieg (aus Wikipedia) 07_48/U 995 vom Typ VII C/41, der meistgebauten U-Boot-Klasse im Zweiten Weltkrieg Als U-Boot-Krieg (auch "Unterseebootkrieg") werden Kampfhandlungen zur See bezeichnet, bei denen U-Boote eingesetzt werden, um feindliche Kriegs- und Frachtschiffe zu versenken. Die Bezeichnung "uneingeschränkter U-Boot-Krieg" wird verwendet, wenn Schiffe ohne vorherige Warnung angegriffen werden. Der Einsatz von U-Booten wandelte sich im Laufe der Zeit vom taktischen Blockadebrecher zum strategischen Blockademittel im Rahmen eines Handelskrieges. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg änderte sich die grundsätzliche Einsatzdoktrin durch die Entwicklung von Raketen tragenden Atom- U-Booten, die als Träger von Kernwaffen eine permanente Bedrohung über den maritimen Bereich hinaus darstellen. Im Gegensatz zum Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg fand hier keine völkerrechtliche Weiterentwicklung zum Einsatz von U-Booten statt. Der Begriff wird besonders auf den Ersten und Zweiten Weltkrieg bezogen. Hierbei sind auch völkerrechtliche Rahmenbedingungen von Bedeutung. Anfänge Während des Amerikanischen Bürgerkrieges wurden 1864 mehrere handgetriebene U-Boote gebaut. Am 17. Februar 1864 versenkte die C.S.S. H. L. Hunley durch eine Sprengladung das Kriegsschiff USS Housatonic der Nordstaaten. Es gab 5 Tote auf dem versenkten Schiff. Die Hunley gilt somit als erstes U-Boot der Welt, das ein anderes Schiff zerstört hat. Das U-Boot wurde allerdings bei dem Angriff auf die Housatonic durch die Detonation schwer beschädigt und sank, wobei auch seine achtköpfige Besatzung getötet wurde. Auftrag der Hunley war die Brechung der Blockade des Südstaatenhafens Charleston durch die Nordstaaten. Jewish British Short Stories in English since the 1970s Axel Stähler Department of Comparative Literature, University of Kent, Canterbury CT2 7NF, UK; [email protected] Received: 30 July 2020; Accepted: 9 September 2020; Published: 11 September 2020 Abstract: Looking at short stories by writers as diverse as Brian Glanville, Ruth Fainlight, Clive Sinclair, Jonathan Wilson, James Lasdun, Gabriel Josipovici, Tamar Yellin, Michelene Wandor, and Naomi Alderman, and extending from the center of Jewish British writing to its margins, this article seeks to locate the defining feature of their ‘Jewish substratum’ in conditions particular to the Jewish post-war experience, and to trace its impact across their thematic plurality which, for the most part, transcends any specifically British concerns that may also emerge, opening up an Anglophone sphere of Jewish writing. More specifically, it is argued that the unease pervading so many Jewish British short stories since the 1970s is a product of, and response to, what may very broadly be described as the Jewish experience and the precarious circumstances of Jewish existence even after the Second World War and its cataclysmic impact. It is suggested that it is prompted in particular by the persistence of the Holocaust and the anxieties the historical event continues to produce; by the confrontation with competing patterns of identification, with antisemitism, and with Israel; and by anxieties of non-belonging, of fragmentation, of dislocation, and of dissolution. Turned into literary tropes, these experiences provide the basis of a Jewish substratum whose articulation is facilitated by the expansion of Jewish British writers into the space of Anglophone Jewish writing. -

The New Year too brings special traditions, where the chi1dren will read their specially prepared “New Years Letters”: one for the parents, one for the grandparents and one for their godparents, who each will give them a few francs or a special present The children have worked hard on these letters, wilting them using their most beautiful handwriting and vocabulary! New Year too is the time for resolutions, decisions and promises. Decisions… promises… we asked you last year to help us raise the number of our membership to 400. We are delighted to let you know that we gave membership number to the last subscriber. Thanks and congratulations to you all! Learning from Entrepreneurial Failure
LEARNING FROM ENTREPRENEURIAL FAILURE Leo Baekeland’s Exit from Europe - Joris Mercelis1 - 150 years after the birth of Leo H. Baekeland (1863- 1944), one of Belgium’s most celebrated chemists and high-tech innovators, it has become a priority of policy-makers and academic administrators on both sides of the Atlantic to make university science students and/or faculty more entrepreneurial. It is therefore significant that Baekeland became a successful entrepreneur only after his move to the United States and departure from academia in 1889. Drawing on new source material and various conceptual frameworks regarding the determinants of successful entrepreneurship, this article will reconsider why this was the case. Consistent with recent evidence in entrepreneurship research, it will pay special attention to the institutional incentives faced by Baekeland and examine whether these were responsible for the failure of his first business endeavor. It was launched on 17 October 1871. It made its maiden voyage on 11 April 1872 from Liverpool to New York, via Queenstown. In May of the same year it made a record westbound crossing, between Queenstown and Sandy Hook, which had been held by Cunard's Scotia since 1866. In October 1874 the Adriatic collided with Cunard's Parthia. Both ships were leaving New York harbour and steaming parallel when they were drawn together. The damage to both ships, however, was superficial. The following year, in March 1875, it rammed and sank the US schooner Columbus off New York during heavy fog. In December it hit and sank a sailing schooner in St. George's Channel. The ship was later identified as the Harvest Queen, as it was the only ship unaccounted for. The misfortune of the Adriatic continued when, on 19 July 1878, it hit the brigantine G.A.
