Gerónimo Sarmiento Cruz Chapter I, 5/15 Draft — do not circulate Dear workshoppers, Thank you for taking the time to read and discuss my work. What follows is still a rough draft of the first chapter of my dissertation, provisionally titled Anational Poetics. In brief, by anational I mean an approach to an order of ideas, images, and concepts whose construction and inner logics are independent of the socio-historical ubiquity of the nation. Mainly relying on two concepts, Deleuze and Guattari’s minor literature and James C. Scott’s hidden transcripts, I am elaborating the anational as a hermeneutics allowing us to read against the backdrop of the nation in order to trace and constellate alternative accounts of collectivities as formulated by minority poetries and poetics. The chapter I am workshopping analyzes the work of Gloria Anzaldúa through the lens of the nation form. In relation to the anational, a lot of the work I do in this chapter is still preparatory—I begin to sketch the concept only towards the end of the chapter. I apologize for the length of the document, yet it is important for me that I workshop the entire thing so that I can assess whether the chapter-format is actually working well and conveying what I intend. It deals with how multicultural ground realities affect ‘Generation-Y’1 greatly. The New Britannica Encyclopaedia (2007: 784) put forth ‘Culture’ as, ‘the integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief and behavior. Culture, thus defined, consists of language, ideas, beliefs, customs, taboos, codes, institutions, tools, techniques, works of art, rituals, ceremonies, and other related components’ This Encyclopaedia (2007: 784) also quotes a classic definition of ‘Culture’ by Burnett Taylor, in his ‘Primitive Culture’ (1871) as ‘culture includes all capabilities and habits acquired by a man as a member of society’ The part ‘… and other related components’ from the first definition and ‘all capabilities and habits acquired by a man as a member of society’ from the second definition include almost every smaller aspect of society and its integrated or recurrent pattern. -

Ype Poortinga Tilburg University, [email protected] I would like to thank for comments and debate on a previous draft of this paper: Ron Fischer, Joop de Jong, and cross-cultural psychologists at Tilburg University in the Netherlands and at Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand. For readers not convinced by the argument in this paper, I may note that several of these, mainly young, cross-cultural researchers insisted that culture should be seen as something real, like the three blind men who are touching parts of one and the same elephant (see footnote 5). This should bode well for the future of the concept of culture and for one prediction of this paper: that “culture” is unlikely to suffer any time soon the fate of ether or generatio spontanea. Planting Parliaments in Eurasia, 1850–1950 Parliaments are often seen as Western European and North American institutions and their establishment in other parts of the world as a derivative and mostly defec- tive process. This book challenges such Eurocentric visions by retracing the evo- lution of modern institutions of collective decision-making in Eurasia. Breaching the divide between different area studies, the book provides nine case studies cov- ering the area between the eastern edge of Asia and Eastern Europe, including the former Russian, Ottoman, Qing, and Japanese Empires as well as their succes- sor states. In particular, it explores the appeals to concepts of parliamentarism, deliberative decision-making, and constitutionalism; historical practices related to parliamentarism; and political mythologies across Eurasia. It focuses on the historical and “reestablished” institutions of decision-making, which consciously hark back to indigenous traditions and adapt them to the changing circumstances in imperial and postimperial contexts. Thereby, the book explains how represent- ative institutions were needed for the establishment of modernized empires or postimperial states but at the same time offered a connection to the past. Biocultural Prerequisites for the Development of Advanced Technology 1 Garry Chick Department of Anthropology, The Pennsylvania State University, 801 Ford Building, University Park, PA; [email protected] In 1961, astronomer Frank Drake developed an equation to permit the estimation of the number of extraterrestrial civilizations in our galaxy via the quantification of what he felt to be relevant factors. Drake’s equation contains two terms, f i and f c, that refer, respectively, to the fraction of planets that harbor intelligent life and the fraction of those with intelligent life that develops a technology that would allow communication with other worlds. These are two of the most difficult terms in the equation to estimate and, not surprisingly, a relatively wide range of values has been offered for each. Estimates of the values of the terms depend on a number of conjectures and assumptions. These include aspects of embodiment, such as sensory modalities and faculties to manipulate the environment, and aspects of culture that seem to be crucial for the development of advanced technology. However, the only data on technological development that we have available is from Earth. Several terrestrial species use technologies, although all of these are very simple with the exception of those created by humans. Similarly, a variety of species are now also claimed to have culture, depending on how it is defined. The purpose of this paper is to examine how embodiment, culture, and their interaction, based on their Earthly manifestations, might affect the values of fi and f c. In order to narrow the case when referring to modern cultural vision, I will look specifically at the modern definition of poetry, to gain a sense of the changing view of poetry through time. The definition of poetry in the Oxford online dictionary is : “a literary work in which the expression of feelings and ideas is given intensity by the use of distinctive style and rhythm” (Oxford Dictionaries, 2016). In order to understand the evolution of the modern cultural narrative with regards to poetry and myth, I will draw on the work of Ian McGilchrist The Master and his Emissary; and the recent publication of Beyond Allegory by Bernado Kastrup. Both these writings provide fruitful and refreshing observation, and offer insight into the possibility and necessity of re- enchanting the modern view. -
