I argue and test the hypothesis that female inheritance has historically had a posi- tive effect on in-marriage and a negative effect on female premarital relations and economic partic- ipation. In the second chapter, my co-authors and I provide evidence on the positive association of in-marriage and corruption. We also test the effect of family ties on nepotism in a bribery experi- ment. The third chapter presents my second joint paper on the consequences of kin networks. -

SAFETY ALERT 2021-01 Version No. 1 Issue Date 08/01/2021 Pilot transfer arrangements 1. Purpose 1.1. This Safety Alert is issued by The Bahamas Maritime Authority (BMA) to bring the results of the International Maritime Pilot Association (IMPA) Safety Campaign 2020 to the attention of seafarers, pilots, owners, managers and Classification Societies. 2. Introduction 2.1 IMPA represents the international community of pilots. It conducts an annual safety campaign with the objective of reporting pilots’ experiences of ladders and boarding equipment to the International Maritime Organization and the wider shipping community. This year’s campaign is especially relevant following the tragic death of two pilots, whilst attempting to board vessels using combination ladders, since the last campaign. 2.2 2020’s campaign received 6394 reports from pilots operating across the world. Broadly in line with previous years’ findings, 12.11% of arrangements were reported to be non- compliant with combination ladders and pilot ladders having the most defects by both number and percentage. Exchange Theory in Classical Sociology Thought John Hamlin Department of Sociology and Anthropology UMD Warshay, in The Current State of Sociological theory (1975), characterizes exchange theory as one of the “eight large theories.” Yet Heath (1971:91) informs us that the only agreement sociologists have concerning which particular theorists should be considered under this heading are, G.C. Homans, Social Behavior: Its Elementary Forms (1961) and P.M. Blau, Exchange an Power in Social Life (1964). The problem with concentrating on these specific works of Homans and Blau are that they result in a view of exchange theory as uniquely individualistic, totally ignoring collectivistic exchange theory. It is indeed interesting that very little of significance has been added to this approach in since Homans classic statement. Milan Zafirovski (2003) has provided a good summery of the updates of exchange theory. For the most part, the theory has changed very little. One reason collectivistic exchange theory is ignored in the United States stems from the fact that it is primarily found in European Anthropology. Another reason derives out of the focus given the examination of exchange theory. At times it is seen as an extension of or in contrast to, economic exchange al la Adam Smith. Or as a reaction of dominate theories in the U.S. during the 1950s and 1960s. Mulkay, for example, interprets Homans’ exchange theory as developing in reaction to the functionalist theories of Parsons and others (1971:3). Blau’s attempts at theory construction are perceived as an extension and further development of Homans’ theory (Mulkay 1971:3). -

Antagonism, anxiety, and accusations characterize the extreme we-they split among those interviewed. Anthropology describes such a society with two major divisions as a moiety, one of two mutually exclusive divisions of a group. The educator community studied exhibits the characteristics of a moiety form of social organization in its two divisions of teachers and technocrats, and their two totems, students and reports respectively. The moiety perspective challenges the hierarchical bureaucratic model of school organization by showing a reasonable distribution of power between moieties. Educator moieties exhibit reciprocal behaviors, such that each division is dependent on the other and cannot maintain a viable educational subculture alone. The traditional subdivision of moieties into phratries and/or clans extends the scope of the analogy, explaining, for example, most teachers seem to find more in common with teachers of the same levels as themselves. -

In particular, I define lineal kinship organization as a social system that emphasizes interactions among lineally related kin | that is, individuals related through females only, if the emphasis is towards matrilineal kin, and individuals related through males only, if the emphasis is towards patrilineal kin. Structuralism 1. The nature of meaning or understanding. A. The role of structure as the system of relationships Something can only be understood (i.e., a meaning can be constructed) within a certain system of relationships (or structure). For example, a word which is a linguistic sign (something that stands for something else) can only be understood within a certain conventional system of signs, which is language, and not by itself (cf. the word / sound and “shark” in English and Arabic). A particular relationship within a شرق combination society (e.g., between a male offspring and his maternal uncle) can only be understood in the context of the whole system of kinship (e.g., matrilineal or patrilineal). Structuralism holds that, according to the human way of understanding things, particular elements have no absolute meaning or value: their meaning or value is relative to other elements. Everything makes sense only in relation to something else. An element cannot be perceived by itself. In order to understand a particular element we need to study the whole system of relationships or structure (this approach is also exactly the same as Malinowski’s: one cannot understand particular elements of culture out of the context of that culture). A particular element can only be studied as part of a greater structure. In fact, the only thing that can be studied is not particular elements or objects but relationships within a system. Our human world, so to speak, is made up of relationships, which make up permanent structures of the human mind. B. The role of oppositions / pairs of binary oppositions Structuralism holds that understanding can only happen if clearly defined or “significant” (= essential) differences are present which are called oppositions (or binary oppositions since they come in pairs). -

Gerónimo Sarmiento Cruz Chapter I, 5/15 Draft — do not circulate Dear workshoppers, Thank you for taking the time to read and discuss my work. What follows is still a rough draft of the first chapter of my dissertation, provisionally titled Anational Poetics. In brief, by anational I mean an approach to an order of ideas, images, and concepts whose construction and inner logics are independent of the socio-historical ubiquity of the nation. Mainly relying on two concepts, Deleuze and Guattari’s minor literature and James C. Scott’s hidden transcripts, I am elaborating the anational as a hermeneutics allowing us to read against the backdrop of the nation in order to trace and constellate alternative accounts of collectivities as formulated by minority poetries and poetics. The chapter I am workshopping analyzes the work of Gloria Anzaldúa through the lens of the nation form. In relation to the anational, a lot of the work I do in this chapter is still preparatory—I begin to sketch the concept only towards the end of the chapter. I apologize for the length of the document, yet it is important for me that I workshop the entire thing so that I can assess whether the chapter-format is actually working well and conveying what I intend. Gender, ritual Pouwer Jan and social formation Gender, ritual in West Papua and social formation A configurational analysis comparing Kamoro and Asmat Gender,in West Papua ritual and social Gender, ritual and social formation in West Papua in West ritual and social formation Gender, This study, based on a lifelong involvement with New Guinea, compares the formation in West Papua culture of the Kamoro (18,000 people) with that of their eastern neighbours, the Asmat (40,000), both living on the south coast of West Papua, Indonesia. The comparison, showing substantial differences as well as striking similarities, contributes to a deeper understanding of both cultures. Part I looks at Kamoro society and culture through the window of its ritual cycle, framed by gender. Part II widens the view, offering in a comparative fashion a more detailed analysis of the socio-political and cosmo-mythological setting of the Kamoro and the Asmat rituals. These are closely linked with their social formations: matrilineally oriented for the Kamoro, patrilineally for the Asmat. Next is a systematic comparison of the rituals. Kamoro culture revolves around cosmological connections, ritual and play, whereas the Asmat central focus is on warfare and headhunting. Because of this difference in cultural orientation, similar, even identical, ritual acts and myths differ in meaning. The comparison includes a cross-cultural, structural analysis of relevant myths. This publication is of interest to scholars and students in Oceanic studies and those drawn to the comparative study of cultures. Jan Pouwer (1924) started his career as a government anthropologist in West New Guinea in the 1950s and 1960s, with periods of intensive fieldwork, in particular among the Kamoro.
