Barbara Birley, on Vindolanda 26th 7:30pm Maulds Meaburn V.I. Leo Houlding on Rock Climbing WHY WE CELEBRATE HARVEST We Plough The Fields and Scatter will probably have either been sung or will be sung in our chapels and churches over the next few weeks – yet the proportion of workers in agriculture and fishing has now slumped to a record low of 1 per cent. In fact the number, for England and Wales, is down from 22 per cent in 1841, according to the Office for National Statistics. Harvest has traditionally been an opportunity to thank God for the crops and food that has been safely gathered in ‘ere the winter storms begin but as towns have grown in size, we have become more dependent on supermarkets – and food, it seems, is always in season. And yet Jesus taught us to pray ‘Give us this day our daily bread’. Harvest is not a new invention. In the Old Testament we learn that Cain and Abel attempted to thank God for their crops and Moses gave thanks to God as recorded in Genesis chapter 8 – and they are doing so partly because they knew that ‘The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it’ (Genesis 2:15). Today we live in times of austerity in the UK when we see an increasing use of food and clothing banks by our poor, and a clamour from some to cut our aid to the poor overseas. Imagine a world in which we demonstrate God’s heart for the poor, for social equality and His longing to have a people who trust in Him as their provider. Last month I attended a meeting held at The Rheged Centre in Penrith which was chaired by Lord Inglewood to highlight the plight of all sectors of the farming industry. One of the invited speakers was MP for Penrith & Borders Rory Stewart who said the government have put certain things in place to help farmers but acknowledged that the government could also do more. Those present had the opportunity of also expressing their views. The practice of giving food at Harvest now largely consists of watching the children in our church congregations bring tins to the front of the church during the first harvest hymn. This food, usually added to a display, is then distributed to local or national needs. However, according to thesheepdip.co.uk, in some fellowships this practice been done away with altogether. Perhaps this is a mistake because Harvest is a reminder that all good gifts around us are sent from heaven above. An important reason to celebrate Harvest is education. Many charities run harvest appeals, offering information about their work to bring good harvests to the world’s poor, but we also need to think about those children who think that food comes from the supermarket. Harvest is a great opportunity for us to remind ourselves of the link between the working of the land and the food on our plates. For the fruits of His creation – thanks be to God. Rev. • Exploring Cumbrian Churches
EXPLORING CUMBRIAN CHURCHES The visitor to Cumbria must not expect to find the large and stately parish churches of, say, East Anglia or Wessex. More typical of this area are the little friendly whitewashed churches of the dales, built late in the middle ages or in the seventeenth century, as plain and straightforward as the men who made them. Few buildings survive from before the Norman Conquest, although there are many interesting pieces of Anglo-Saxon and Viking age sculpture including two of the finest crosses in England, at Bewcastle and Gosforth. However, it is a great area of Norman churches; time and again you will find the heavy pillars and rounded arches typical of the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. Due to the wars with Scotland which began in 1297 there was little cash to spare for church building in the Decorated and Perpendicular styles, although there are glorious exceptions in Carlisle Cathedral and Cartmel Priory. Eighteenth century prosperity gave the towns some fine new churches, as at Whitehaven, Workington and Penrith. Cumbria did not escape the Victorian passion for church rebuilding -indeed the poverty of earlier years meant there was essential work for the Victorians to do. The primary function of all churches, whether pre- Norman or present day, is as a place of worship; and it is hoped that visitors will spare some time from admiring the structure of the buildings to join the local congregations at their services. Carlisle The Cathedral is a small cathedral for a small diocese - but for all that, a fine building.

Eden Unclassified Roads - Published January 2021 • The list has been prepared using the available information from records compiled by the County Council and is correct to the best of our knowledge. It does not, however, constitute a definitive statement as to the status of any particular highway. • This is not a comprehensive list of the entire highway network in Cumbria although the majority of streets are included for information purposes. • The extent of the highway maintainable at public expense is not available on the list and can only be determined through the search process. • The List of Streets is a live record and is constantly being amended and updated. We update and republish it every 3 months. • Like many rural authorities, where some highways have no name at all, we usually record our information using a road numbering reference system. Archaeology of Cumbria ABSTRACT This thesis consists of a survey of events and materia culture in Cumbria for the period-between the withdrawal of Roman troops from Britain circa AD ^10, and the Viking settlement in Cumbria in the tenth century. An attempt has been made to view the archaeological data within the broad framework provided by environmental, historical and onomastic studies. Chapters 1-3 assess the current state of knowledge in these fields in Cumbria, and provide an introduction to the archaeological evidence, presented and discussed in Chapters ^--8, and set out in Appendices 5-10.

A Time to Keep Silence We have all felt the loss of much from our daily life during the course of the pandemic: ordinary things, perhaps trivial in themselves, which normally we take for granted. That shop which can't be opened; a cup of coffee with a friend; visiting relatives who aren't local. And, if you've been 'shielding', you're aware of how dependent you are on the kindness of neighbours. (I pity those living alone in an anonymous tower block.) And not only have we to contend with all the problems Corona virus has brought us, but international news constantly attacks our peace of mind. We saw just how fragile is civilisation when we watched the violent mob invade the Capitol. As I was saying, we've lost many things during this past year.
