This was a really enjoyable trip brilliantly organised by Chairman Andrew Hartley and his wife Anna. As usual on these Friends visits, approximately 15 minutes prior to arrival Andrew took the microphone and gave the party a detailed description of the design and building of the house and gardens which had been under the direction first of the playwright Sir John Vanburgh (he had never before designed a house) and later under supervision of the architect Nicholas The group then went on a tour of the house to Hawksmoor. He also gave an account of the view not only the public rooms but also the very lives of the more interesting members of the fine and tasteful Christmas decorations, with open Carlisle branch of the Howard family who had log fires in many of the rooms. Of particular lived at Castle Howard since completion of the interest was the gingerbread creation of Castle first part of the building early in the 18th century. Howard in miniature. He reminded us also of the television programme Brideshead Revisited which had been made at Lunch was served in the Grecian Hall which had Castle Howard.

  • Folk Song in Cumbria: a Distinctive Regional
FOLK SONG IN CUMBRIA: A DISTINCTIVE REGIONAL REPERTOIRE? A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy by Susan Margaret Allan, MA (Lancaster), BEd (London) University of Lancaster, November 2016 ABSTRACT One of the lacunae of traditional music scholarship in England has been the lack of systematic study of folk song and its performance in discrete geographical areas. This thesis endeavours to address this gap in knowledge for one region through a study of Cumbrian folk song and its performance over the past two hundred years. Although primarily a social history of popular culture, with some elements of ethnography and a little musicology, it is also a participant-observer study from the personal perspective of one who has performed and collected Cumbrian folk songs for some forty years. The principal task has been to research and present the folk songs known to have been published or performed in Cumbria since circa 1900, designated as the Cumbrian Folk Song Corpus: a body of 515 songs from 1010 different sources, including manuscripts, print, recordings and broadcasts. The thesis begins with the history of the best-known Cumbrian folk song, ‘D’Ye Ken John Peel’ from its date of composition around 1830 through to the late twentieth century. From this narrative the main themes of the thesis are drawn out: the problem of defining ‘folk song’, given its eclectic nature; the role of the various collectors, mediators and performers of folk songs over the years, including myself; the range of different contexts in which the songs have been performed, and by whom; the vexed questions of ‘authenticity’ and ‘invented tradition’, and the extent to which this repertoire is a distinctive regional one.

TWO VALLEYS PARISH NEWS www.crosthwaiteandlyth.co.uk/twovalleys Serving the parishes of Cartmel Fell, Crook, Crosthwaite, Helsington, Underbarrow, Winster, & Witherslack April 2018 70p Holme Crag Garden Party INTRIGUINGLY beautiful gardens which took over 30 years to nurture from rock and rugged land are open on Sunday, May 20th in Witherslack. Featured in Tim Longville’s acclaimed “Gardens of the Lake District”, Holme Crag is opening its gates as a fund-raiser for St. Paul’s Parish Church. Appearing on television, loved my many who have visited the magical place, the garden is testimony to the late Jack Watson’s vision of ‘merely cultivating ecology’. A magnet for birds, wild animals and insects, this where a lovely, untamed landscape meets decades of graft, and Jack's passion for planting, to create a unique and beguiling spectacle. By late spring, pond-side astilbes and hostas may be pushing through, rhododendrons still flowering and Holme Crag’s Candelabra primulas in their first ascent. Many of the plants and trees were established to encourage wildlife and the garden is noted for a rich variety of birds. Please join us for cream teas, raffles, plants, cakes, white elephant, a selection of stalls and, of course, the garden exploration. Running from 2 to 5pm, entrance is £3, children free. • 1 Written Description of the Boundary Relating to the Yorkshire Dales National Park
Written Description of the Boundary relating to the Yorkshire Dales National Park (Designation) (Variation) Confirmation Order 2015 Introduction This description is designed to be read in conjunction with the 1:25,000 scale maps included within the Yorkshire Dales National Park (Designation) (Variation) Confirmation Order 2015 as confirmed by the Secretary of State on 23rd day of October 2015. It does not form part of the Order but is intended to assist interpretation of the map against features on the ground. Map references in italics refer to the map numbers in the top right corner of the maps bound in with the Order. Map references within the text e.g. SD655749 are six figure Ordnance Survey Grid References. The description of the boundary proceeds round the area of the boundary variations in a clockwise direction (in line with the direction of the text in the original boundary description which accompanied the 1953 Yorkshire Dales National Park Designation Order), from the point at which it deviates from the original boundary, to the point at which it re-joins it. In line with the description of the 1953 boundary, and unless otherwise stated: where the boundary follows roads and tracks, it follows the edge of the metalled surface of the road and the edge of the track, excluding the roads and tracks themselves (there are some exceptions, as stated below); and in the case of water courses, if it is not stated whether the boundary follows the edge or the centre, the boundary follows the centre of the water course (although in this description the edge of water courses is generally stated).

  • Jubilee Digest Briefing Note for Cartmel and Furness
Furness Peninsula Department of History, Lancaster University Victoria County History: Cumbria Project ‘Jubilee Digests’ Briefing Note for Furness Peninsula In celebration of the Diamond Jubilee in 2012, the Queen has decided to re-dedicate the VCH. To mark this occasion, we aim to have produced a set of historical data for every community in Cumbria by the end of 2012. These summaries, which we are calling ‘Jubilee Digests’, will be posted on the Cumbria County History Trust’s website where they will form an important resource as a quick reference guide for all interested in the county’s history. We hope that all VCH volunteers will wish to get involved and to contribute to this. What we need volunteers to do is gather a set of historical facts for each of the places for which separate VCH articles will eventually be written: that’s around 315 parishes/townships in Cumberland and Westmorland, a further 30 in Furness and Cartmel, together with three more for Sedbergh, Garsdale and Dent. The data included in the digests, which will be essential to writing future VCH parish/township articles, will be gathered from a limited set of specified sources. In this way, the Digests will build on the substantial progress volunteers have already made during 2011 in gathering specific information about institutions in parishes and townships throughout Cumberland and Westmorland. As with all VCH work, high standards of accuracy and systematic research are vital. Each ‘Jubilee Digest’ will contain the following and will cover a community’s history from the earliest times to the present day: Name of place: status (i.e.
