Augsburg | Facts and Numbers 2 The 2000 year old Augsburg is the third largest city in , a university city, the seat of the Swabian government and an important economic centre where internationally renowned companies offer state-of-the-art computer and electronic technology. Since 1237 the city has displayed the pine cone on its coat-of-arms. The city emblem recalls its numerous representations in stone from Augsburg‘s era as a Roman capital, being displayed, for an example, on the Roman wall on the Fronhof.

Maximilian Museum

Located in the pedestrian zone, it is housed in two 16th c. upper-middle-class residential buildings which were combined at the end of the 17th century. Three original ceiling frescoes remain, major works of Melchior Steidl. In 1856, one year after Augsburg‘s oldest museum was opened, King Maximi- Opening hours: lian II of Bavaria took over patronage of this museum and gave it his name.
