The authors present here an exploratory and unspecific method that does not necessitate any a priori on the data – or any heavy trans- formation such as lemmatisation– that would have to be understood as a first step in the apprehension of a corpus. After a first phase of calibra- tion, based on a control sample, the authors will introduce a method which heuristic value is to bring out, at different levels, internal divisions of dif- ferent kinds (diachronic, diatopic, related to authorship or scribes,. ), that can then be analysed specifically. The authors illustrate this method by applying it to a corpus of Occitan medieval texts, the vidas. The cor- pus’s authors and origins are in good part unknown. 1 A peculiar corpus: the vidas 1.1 Elements of context Amongst the relatively small corpus of Occitan prose literature from the XIIIth century that has survived to this day, the vidas, along with the razos, constitute a corpus of roughly 225 texts known as the “biographies” of the troubadours since Raynouard’s edition in 1820. Several debates surround these texts’ origin: were they performed at first or were they created specifically to be integrated into manuscripts? Did they appear in Northern Italy or do they come from an older Languedocian tradition? Despite the lack of medieval unambiguous vocabulary, there is an apparent distinction between commentaries, explanation of a specific poem (a razo), and more general biographical narratives detached from a specific work (vidas as we call them).

We see a preference for a “great man theory” of origins, though the “great man” may be a fictional woman. Medieval and Renaissance Occitan authors, including Uc de Saint Circ, Guilhem Molinier, and Jean de Nostredame, used differing origin myths to validate literature in a language that was perceived not to carry the prestige of twelfth- and thirteenth-century Latin or fifteenth- and sixteenth-century French.     THOMAS HINTON Troubadour Biographies and the Value of Authentic Love Daude de Pradas and Uc de Saint Circ Abstract The idea of an essential connection between the quality of a song and the sincerity of the emotion it expresses (“I sing because I love”) is a topos used in various ways by troubadours, one which lent itself naturally to discussion of their relationship to audiences and to other poets. The topos transferred across to the thirteenth- century biographies (vidas) found alongside the songs in numerous manuscripts, as in the arresting claim, made in the vida about Daude de Pradas, that his songs “did not spring from love and therefore did not find favour with audiences.” Elsewhere, however, the biographies give a different account of inauthenticity, as the edge which allows troubadours to exercise control over their social environment; significantly, this version of the topos appears in the vida for Uc de Saint Circ, who is believed to be the main author of the corpus. In these contrasting accounts of poetic inauthenticity, we can see the biographies wrestling with questions of control and definition of the cultural capital of troubadour lyric: patron and poet, cleric and lay. The thirteenth century saw authors and their audiences increasingly asserting the lasting cultural value of vernacular literature in general, and (through its association with troubadour production) Occitan in particular.     OCCITAN POETRY INTRODUCTION Anna Kłosowska This volume presents a poetic practice deployed in one language (or a panoply of mutually conversant variants) and one tradition (or a network of permeable traditions) across the European Southwest. In the nineteenth century, the study of oc poetry became compartmentalized in national institutions, and publishing and teaching tradition strongly reflects that. Our volume restores some of the lost continuity, along the lines of post-postcolonial studies and the focus on the “rediscovered” concept of the Mediterranean,1 at the expense of fragmented (and ideologically fraught) “national” histories. Along these lines, this volume includes discussions of Occitan authors who were born in today’s Spain (Catalonia) and wrote in today’s Italy (Sicily). At the same time, the contributions do justice to the irreducible plurality of the oc tradition. The authors discussed here are the founding poetic ancestors of Catalonia and Castilia, Aragon and Auvergne, of Portugal, Spain, Italy, and France. Two essays focus on one of the greatest Italian troubadours, Sordello, and another three on his Catalan contemporary and equal, Cerverí. The two poets are connected, among others, through the person of Charles of Anjou, Sordello’s main patron and enemy of Cerverí’s mécène James I of Aragon.2 Another three essays focus on the poets of the classical period often claimed by the French, Bernart de Ventadorn and Marcabru. And, the essays extend over nearly the whole span of the oc tradition, from the classical period (mid-12th c.) through 13th c. flourishing to Dante, and through the late fifteenth century (Pfeffer, 1477).
