It is a global gathering place for ideas. The College's colorful kaleidoscope of tongues, talents, and cultures - 66 different native languages are spoken here provides an extraordinary educational environment. A strong liberal arts curriculum assures students education for a full career and a full life. Opportunities abound with special programs developed for honors students; students in pre- law, pre-med, and business; adults; "fresh start" students; foreign language speakers. In all their diversity, students come first. Queens College was cited byThe Selective Guide to Colleges, published by the New York Times, as the strongest of the 19 colleges in the City University of New York. Like other CUNY colleges, it is a commuter school. Funded by the State of New York, Queens College serves all the people of the state. Most Queens College students live in New York City's five boroughs, or in Nassau, Suffolk, and Westchester counties. The campus is located at Exit 24 of the Long Island Expressway (I-495) on the corner of Kissena Boulevard in Flushing, close to public transportation (the Long Island Railroad, and Queens and New York City bus and subway lines). Enrollment The student population is diverse and achievement oriented. More than 18,000 students are enrolled in all divisions. The graduate student enrollment is over 3,000. Student Achievement Recent graduates have won fellowships, scholarships, and assistantships for study at many of the country's leading graduate schools, including Harvard, Yale, Northwestern, Emory, and MIT. A number of Queens College students received special awards for graduate study, most notably two recent Salk Fellowships. Over the years, Queens College students have had an acceptance rate to medical schools of 60 to 75 percent. Faculty The faculty is a roll-call of excellence world-class research scholars who care deeply about teaching. For day and evening, including adjuncts, the faculty numbers over 1,100; of the 600 full- time faculty, more than 80 percent hold the doctoral degree. Research Recent awards to support faculty research have included grants from New York State agencies to support ethnic studies projects and day-care training services, as well as the establishment of a Reference Resource Center for the New York State Department of Social Services. Federal grants facilitate the conduct of many basic research projects in the sciences, some with important implications for causes and treatment of disease. Undergraduates are often deeply involved in Queens College projects, working in laboratories, classrooms, or in the field. Because of the diversity of ongoing research and training efforts, students are able to participate in and gain important insights into potential career paths and to prepare for further graduate training. Academic Structure Queens College consists of an undergraduate day session (College of Liberal Arts and Sciences), an evening session, and a Graduate Division. In addition, there is a Summer Session that serves all branches of the College. There are three academic divisions: Arts and Humanities, Mathematics and Natural Sciences, and Social Sciences. ABSTRACT Yiddish and the Avant-Garde in American Jewish Poetry Sarah Ponichtera This dissertation traces the evolution of a formalist literary strategy through the twentieth century in both Yiddish and English, through literary and historical analyses of poets and poetic groups from the turn of the century until the 1980s. It begins by exploring the ways in which the Yiddish poet Yehoash built on the contemporary interest in the primitive as he developed his aesthetics in the 1900s, then turns to the modernist poetic group In zikh (the Introspectivists) and their efforts to explore primitive states of consciousness in individual subjectivity. In the third chapter, the project turns to Louis Zukofsky's inclusion of Yehoash's Yiddish translations of Japanese poetry in his own English epic, written in dialogue with Ezra Pound. It concludes with an examination of the Language poets of the 1970s, particularly Charles Bernstein's experimental verse, which explores the way that language shapes consciousness through the use of critical and linguistic discourse. Each of these poets or poetic groups uses experimental poetry as a lens through which to peer at the intersections of language and consciousness, and each explicitly identifies Yiddish (whether as symbol or reality) as an essential component of their poetic technique.

    Tragedy and Triumph Early Testimonies of Jewish Survivors of World War II Compiled and Translated by Freda Hodge ABOUT THIS BOOK In this collection Freda Hodge retrieves early voices of Holocaust survivors. Men, women and children relate experiences of deportation and ghetto­ isation, forced labour camps and death camps, death marches and liber­ ation. Such eye­witness accounts collected in the immediate post­war period constitute, as the historian Feliks Tych points out, the most important body of Jewish documents pertaining to the history of the Holocaust. The fresh­ ness of memory makes these early voices profoundly different from, and historically more significant than, later recollections gathered in oral history programs. Carefully selected and painstakingly translated, these survivor accounts were first published between 1946 and 1948 in the Yiddish journal Fun Letzten Khurben (‘From the Last Destruction’) in postwar Germany, by refugees waiting in ‘Displaced Persons’ camps, in the American zone of occupation, for the arrival of travel documents and visas. These accounts have not previously been available in English. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Freda Hodge holds degrees in English, Linguistics and Jewish Studies, and has taught at universities and colleges in South Africa and Australia. Fluent in Hebrew as well as Yiddish, she works at the Holocaust Centre in Melbourne conducting interviews with survivors and families.
