One of my favorite movie characters Ferris Bueller once said “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” I think about that quote on quite a regular basis and I think it’s pretty accurate. As I get older, I continue to get busier and busier and life sometimes just seems like a blur. Days go by fast and you tend to miss the small things because the larger things consume you. Lots of people I notice are always waiting on something or counting down the days to that next big thing. Maybe it’s a vacation, or just a day off, maybe it’s purchasing a new car, or maybe it’s waiting on some other exciting event in your life that’s coming up. What I have noticed and have found myself guilty of as well, is that you want the days to go by fast to get to that event. You tend to rush through your day and you find yourself just solely focused on that particular thing. In reality, you only get so much time in life and I find it rather frightening that we sometimes can almost lose entire days just focusing on a certain event in our future.

We also now have smart phones so we can reach anyone anytime and anyplace. With that phone, we can access the ends of the internet as well and answer pretty much any question instantly. Gone are the days of going to the library and looking in a book to find the answer. We can broadcast out in social media to friends and keep people up-to-date on what we are doing instantly and almost play-by-play in our lives. Even now, in just trips to the store or your favorite restaurant, I notice less people interacting with each other and instead staring at their phones. We are eliminating jobs and adding machines to replace people to speed up the processes we consider inconvenient or too slow like checking out at the grocery store. At my local bank, they continue to push me to use the ATM and no longer come in the branch to do my banking. Thus, eliminating more jobs and interactions.

In the automotive world, manufacturers are pushing more toward self-driving cars. The main reason is safety and the cause is distraction from all the technology we currently have. Along with cell phones, cars have so many features and gizmos now that the manufacturer has to add things like lane-keep assist or pre-collision to help aid distracted drivers. Instead of focusing on the driving experience, they spend development time on figuring out how to take the driver out of the equation. This plays into my discussion of rushing through a day or time to get to a certain event in life. Instead of enjoying that drive with the windows down and radio turned up, people rather send email and tweets while the car drives itself. Sure, not everyone out there is a driving enthusiast like me, but there is something somewhat peaceful about driving home on a nice summer evening taking in the sights and sounds of nature and our surroundings.

Occasionally we need to slow it down some and take a look around at the simple things in life. There are things in everyday life that are special like interacting in-person with friends and family. Or maybe it’s just that little bit of alone time on your commute to and from work. Where you can reflect on positives in your life or smaller things you might have overlooked. In a constantly evolving world of instant gratification, we’re always trying to rush things or get it now. The moral of my story here is that we are becoming increasingly more distracted and disconnected with the simple wonders of the world in which we live in. We rush through life buried in our phones and computers or waiting on that next event to happen. All the while missing the wonderful things around us that happen daily. Or those small simple pleasures in life. Once again to quote the words of Ferris “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” |2 | 2017 NORPCA OFFICERS

It’s time now to think about getting our cars out of their winter storage and driving! NORPCA has a great weekend planned for everyone. As in past years, Friday April 28 is a lapping day for experienced drivers with Saturday and Sunday welcoming drivers of all experience levels. Our club does a particularly great job teaching drivers new to performance driving how to be comfortable and confident driving on the track. We have a fantastic and highly experienced group of in-car and classroom instructors who love sharing their passion and enthusiasm with everyone at the event. The club has helmets to loan so new drivers can experience all the fun without having to commit to buying a helmet--even though I can promise you'll want to after your first weekend! Registration is available on-line at: www.clubregistration.net

Please email me if questions arise, see you at the track!

|7 | Porschephiles-Nature or Nurture by Dan Engel

While doing some day dreaming the other day with the Velocity channel on in the background, my mind wandered back to my grade school days when the seeds of being a car guy might have been planted. My father, despite his penchant for buying the worlds slowest station wagons, like our six cylinder-two door-1957 Plymouth, might have been partially responsible for kick starting an eight year old’s passion for German sports cars.

For a bit of context, every summer Mom and Dad would pack up three, then four, and finally five kids into the then current family wagon and point it towards one of his medical conventions which were always multiple days away from our home in Minnesota. I spent a good number of hours looking at wheat fields, and grazing Angus cattle on the plains in the Dakotas on our way to at least one recurring destination, Banff Alberta, where Dad tended to wounded Canadian GI’s at a rehab center shortly after World War II. Fortunately, that cast iron six made it there and back, and then onto San Francisco, Sun Valley, Jackson Hole, and Miami Beach over its lifetime before being replaced with yet another wagon possessing glacial like speed. This time, it was a 63’ Ford with three rows, because the kid head count hit five by that time. On the bright side, Dad finally popped for dealer installed air which kept us cooler, but even slower, taxing that Ford’s minuscule V8 every time the compressor kicked in.

My older brother Neal and I would pass our road trip hours reading Wall Drug and |8 | Burma Shave signs. To spice things up, we challenged each other to be the first to identify cars in the on- coming lane, or those that couldn’t stand to sit any longer behind Dad and his just a bit under the posted limit pace. And in case you were wondering, over an entire childhood of trips, I don’t remember Dad ever passing anything other than John Deere tractors on the two lane highways we traveled before the Interstates were finished.

Fords, Corvettes, Chryslers, DeSotos, Ramblers, Caddy’s and Chevy’s were quick and never miss answers spit out with machine gun speed. Correctly identifying one of British manufacture was more difficult, but when you’re eight or nine, faking an answer with authority was just as good as being right. And I’m sure we were right less than half of the time with “Jag, MG, Healy or Triumph”. But in a competitive game between brothers one year apart in age, points are points. Occasionally a VW like shape would quickly scoot past us and earn a couple of “that’s ugly” groans. Those groans of course were targeted at something my wife Carol and I wish we had in our garage today - a mid to late 50’s Porsche 356.

Fast forward a few years, and one day, Dave, a high school buddy, drove up in his Dad’s new dark colored 66’ or 67’ Porsche 911. I didn’t know diddly squat about what he was driving other than it was a Porsche which I’m sure I pronounced as Porsh at the time. But I thought it was stunning. I watched Dave drive South on Grimes Avenue in Edina, Minnesota on that sunny spring afternoon chirping the tires in second gear. That’s about all it took and I was smitten.

Now being in high school, broke, and having a father with an affinity for sloth like wagons, I needed some patience which even today Carol will tell anyone within ear shot, is not my strong suit. A few years later found me nearly through with college, but just as broke. Fortunately Carousel Porsche+Audi, was on one of my regular commuting routes and so I pulled in to feed my day dreams every couple of months.

Porsche dealers in those days, at least in Minnesota, were smallish by today’s standards. In fact, I don’t recall ever seeing more than one 911 on the floor any of the times I stopped by. The salesman, who always wore a wool pin striped suit, something else I couldn’t afford, knew I was an unqualified prospect. But he was probably a bit bored in the middle of the afternoon and courteous enough to explain why the 911 was so special. Of all the technical and creature comfort features he listed, the one that really stuck was “140 miles per hour.”

Today, I know he may have rounded-up a few tics for effect, but it clearly stuck. Smart guy in retrospect, since a very short time later and having a real job, a Zambezi Green 74’ 914-1.8 was parked in the garage, replaced two years later by a Black 76’ 911S Targa.

Today we’re on number eight and thinking about (me at least) number nine before too long. Which reminds me of one of my favorite observations about my good friend and long- time Porsche owner Sam, whose wife Nancy once quipped, “I always know when Sam is thinking about a new Porsche because he starts drinking cheaper beer.” Brilliant! I think Sam is onto something. I’m going to pick up a six pack of Busch instead of Kolsch the next time the beer shelf in the fridge looks a bit thin.

|9 | “...But Wait There’s More” Amelia Island Activities Vie for Your Attention by Kathy Kurkov

For 22 years Bill Warner’s Amelia Island Concours has been gaining momentum. The field of cars has grown and the depth of race car drivers and guest speakers is constantly amazing. To round out these activities there are test drives, formal galas and public cars and coffee. Then there are auctions and SVRA racing the following weekend. Finally, to complete your sensory overload, this year there was the inaugural Werks reunion. It’s all about budgeting; time, stamina and (if bidding) money.

Werks Reunion- less than six degrees of separation If a group of people have never met, it seems contradictory to have a reunion. Yet given the ties within the community of Porsche owners, it was easy to see that it was in fact, a reunion. There were groups meeting en-route and caravanning together, Facebook friends meeting for the first time and even a chance to start rubbing elbows with a 911 YouTube great- Mangus. If you didn’t know someone directly, you certainly had friends, or cars, closely in common.

The festivities started at 7:00 AM under cool and slightly overcast skies. It was perfect for a full day of swapping stories and looking at cars. In addition, stopping by the vendors booths and grabbing a bite from food trucks was spiced up with stories of racing at Pikes Peak and “meeting” celebrity cars like the 1994 3.6 911 turbo from movie Bad Boyz.

Talking with Vu Nuygen, Executive Director of the Porsche Club of America he showed his commitment and excitement about the inaugural Werks Reunion. He said, “It’s been spectacular! We’ve brought more people to this inaugural event than we did in the inaugural event in Monterey (500 cars). We’re now at 651 entrants, it’s pretty amazing.” Nuygen added that plans for this iconic event for next year are underway, and that although it may be a drive from there is so much to do in addition to the Werks Reunion.

The playing field- numbers galore and the Boxster celebrates its 20th year Judging was not as stringent as during Porsche Parade Concours; however, owners who wanted to enter their cars could compete in more than 20 prize categories. For those not interested in competing, there was a chance to park with like models in the Porsche Corrals. It was in the corral where the Boxsters (and their owners) celebrated 20 years of production. There were Caymans, Cayennes, Maccans and Panameras, but the numbered cars, the 911, 356, 914, 912, 924, 944, 968 over-ran the golf course. A passerby remarked that he gets to visit a lot of golf courses, but only by driving his Porsche on the fair-way.

The show wrapped up late afternoon leaving people exhausted, but discussing the previous auctions held at Bonhams and Gooding & Co. while looking forward to Hollywood Wheels (the official auction house of Werks Reunion), RM Sotheby’s and Motorstalgia. Although all auction houses had Porsches at different price points, it seemed that the Porsche supercars were the real head turners at Gooding & Co. The auction had the 1988 GT1 Strassenversion on the dais with a 997 GT3 RS 4.0 and a 997 GT2RS placed strategically around it. The GT1 Strassenversion sold for $5,665,000, while its frenemy, a 1957 Jaguar XKSS on the main dais, remained unsold.

Early the following day energy bars and time were in short supply as the Concours d’ Elegance was moved up to Saturday due to forecasted rain. It was a whirlwind to see the laid-back cars at Cars & Coffee, then hike over to see the invite-only autos at the Concours.

It’s in the Werks for next year The second weekend in March has been growing in importance for car aficionados. Now with the added Werks Reunion, it has turned into an enduro weekend of “Porsche-people” getting together and having fun. |10| Amelia Island Scenes Photos: Kathy Kurkov

Greetings PCA Zone 4 Members,

I recently attended the Winter Board of Directors Meeting in Los Angeles, arriving early enough to be able to take a beautiful new Porsche out at the Porsche Driving Experience. After the day of fun, I spent 2 entire days in meetings, including the Board of Directors Meeting. The weekend concluded with a reception held at the newly opened Porsche Experience Center in Carson, CA, where the evening began with a tour. This beautiful facility consists of the Porsche Driving Experience, a Human Performance Center, a Driving Simulator Center, and Porsche Exclusive.

The center is also the new home of Porsche Motorsports North America, the only authorized provider in the US and Canada for the sale, parts supply, and service of all specially manufactured Porsche racecars. A large glass wall provides visitors a view of the workshop, where historical racing cars are repaired and track vehicles are maintained. In the lobby was displayed an amazing collection of Porsches including a 911R, a GT3RS, a 917, as well as a 959 prototype. The workshop display contains some very iconic racecars. Following the tour, we enjoyed a cocktail reception in the café adjacent to the boutique before sitting down to a wonderful dinner at Restaurant 917. With the unseasonably warm days sprinkled throughout this winter, many members have already been able to take off the car covers, unplug the trickle chargers, and get out for a drive. I attended Motor-Stadt’s Annual Holiday Dinner at the Spartan Hall of Fame Café, which had an excellent turnout from the region. This year’s event included a speaker. Lori Mauthe, whose father, Peter Schutz was the CEO of Porsche AG in the 80’s, entertained us with numerous anecdotes of his time in charge of Porsche, including how he saved the 911.

I also recently attended ARPCA’s All Member Dinner at the Blue North Restaurant in Pittsburgh. The region filled the restaurant to capacity for this dinner, which celebrated the region’s new members.

They welcomed the new members with wonderful donated prizes and encouraged them to continue to participate and enjoy the camaraderie that is PCA. During the evening they also presented their enthusiast of the year awards. It was a wonderful evening and everyone had an enjoyable time.

Events are continually being added to the region calendars. Please remember to frequently check your inboxes, region’s newsletter and website. Many regions’ events calendars are posted on the Events page of the Zone 4 website http://zone4.pca.org . Visit the website for the latest details on many of the events that are being planned. Here are just some of the events taking place this month:

NORPCA ANNOUNCES

Catawba Island Club Weekend Event – July 15-16, 2017

MARK YOUR CALENDARS NOW!!!!

This event filled up early last year and unfortunately there were some of you that were too late to register. We don’t want this to happen this year! So mark your calendars now!!

Specific details to be announced in future issues of The Voices.

|16| INTRODUCING CHUCK RESNIK

NEW TECH SESSION COORDINATOR!!

Let me introduce myself - My name is Chuck Resnik and I have agreed to become the Technical Sessions Coordinator for NORPCA. I am also a relatively new Porsche owner. I have always followed/loved the cars for as long as I can remember and, at the urging of my wife, bless her soul, I finally pulled the trigger on a purchase about a year ago. Had I known how truly great the Porsche cars are; I would have done this about 30 years ago!

I became involved in NORPCA almost immediately after acquiring my Porsche and have since thought about becoming more involved in some way. Well, after recently submitting my resignation from my Credit Union's Board of Director Member position, which I held for 18+ years, I "needed" something else to devote some time too.

Now, with a bit of free time, and my Technical background and interests (varied and WIDE), it seemed that the NORPCA Position of Technical Coordinator may be suited. This position may fit my MO of always seeking knowledge in one form or another. With that said; I believe I will gear future Technical Sessions with always attempting to learn something. Porsche or not (as I have been told). Better, in my mind, if Porsche related though.

So, I look forward to working more closely with the Club and its members and I hope to meet more of you at the future Technical sessions that we put together and host.

|17| Member of the Month: Chris Studor by Brad Kennett

This month’s member is pretty new to the club and the Northern Ohio Porsche scene. Chris has been the General Manager at Porsche of North Olmsted since March 2016. The first Porsche for him to call his own arrived recently - a 2017 911 that he ordered as part of Porsche’s Dealer Employee program. Just don’t think that Chris is new to Porsche. He’s been around Porsches for a long time and has a varied interest in many interesting sports cars. Some of you may recognize Chris and/or his family name as his father Curt and Uncle Jake started North Coast Nissan in Middleburg Hts starting in the early 70’s. Chris literally grew up in the car business with the Nissans (earlier as Datsuns). It’s no wonder that he enjoys his nicely restored, sorted street/track 240Z that’s been in the family for a while along with a nice “improved” ’90 300ZX Turbo. In addition to the Nissan connection, his father also restored a variety of British sports cars over the years too. His father was also Chris’s first introduction to the world of Porsche as Curt owned an ’87 Carrera (in official 1980’s Guards Red/Black color scheme), and later a first year 1997 Boxster.

Like many childhood automotive dreams, the Porsche 930 is at the top of the list for many of us, including Chris. Unfortunately, he missed on fulfilling that dream about a decade ago when he was offered a nice low mileage example for $35K. While it was out of the budget then, it’s even more so today with the prices climbing like the tachometer when the turbo boost kicks in. There’s always time for another one.

Chris lives in Brunswick Hills with his wife, Breanne, and with Bubba the latest in one of several rescue dogs that have been in their family. Chris and Breanne spend quite a bit of their spare time volunteering for rescue shelters. We look forward to seeing Chris at upcoming NORPCA events. You may see him with a craft beer or bourbon. If not, offer him one. He’ll appreciate it and you’ll both have a nice time.

|18| Invitation to Artwood Derby Competition by Brad Kennett

SPACES Art Gallery will be hosting their 7th annual Artwood Derby at their new location 2900 Detroit Ave. Cleveland, OH 44113 on Saturday June 17. This year NORPCA is helping to sponsor this event. By sponsoring the track, the Club will be listed in their advertising; as well as, on the track that all competitors will use. Proceeds will benefit SPACES. The Club will have up to 8 members/teams build “Artcars”.

If you’ve built, raced or seen a Pinewood Derby Car, you’ll know what this is. You’ll start with the same basic building blocks and rules, you’ll be encouraged (required?) to make something special. It’s not just about going fast – it has to look good too. What better for our Porsche club members? We need 8 people or groups to build cars. We’re also going to have some prominent space to show a couple member’s cars at the event.

We’re asking for a $50 donation to defray the Club’s sponsorship costs of this event. I participated in this event two years ago with coworkers and we had a lot of fun for a great cause. Let me know if you have any questions and would be willing to participate.

Thank you,

After a year of stability in 2016 at the , we are once again scrambling to secure an autocross location for the 2017 season. The ESM management is hot on the trail to find a new buyer for the property. Other than an occasional store-front church service, nothing much was happening on Sundays except monthly NOR autocrosses. Apparently, mall management is of the opinion that we would be a distraction to prospective buyers. So at least for this April and May we are outta there! I have a feeling that once conditions return to “buyer beware”, the powers that be will again be happy to accept our monthly parking lot rental payment.

But in the meantime we still need autocross pavement. NOR is very fortunate to have a dedicated Autocross Chairman in the person of John Hulick. When he was not otherwise occupied keeping the OR’s at Akron General well stocked with surgical equipment, he was pounding pavement looking for a place to place pylons. And what better a place than another abandoned i.e., Rolling Acres.

Porsche Clubs have had past favorable exposure at Rolling Acres. Last September the 356 Registry held their East Coast Holiday in Fairlawn and thanks to successful negotiations with the City of Akron by NOR’s Harry Covington, they were able to secure the mall for the Holiday Autocross. The registry group proved to be good, albeit temporary tenants. So when John approached the city with a request for NOR’s usage this year, it was readily granted.

Therefore, NOR’s annual kickoff to the autocross season with a car control clinic is once again happening only a bit further south than normal. The informational event flyer is on page 6 of this Voices. And you read it right, there is no entry fee for PCA members. Please follow the advance registration procedure. It makes it a lot easier for the on-site crew doing the paper work even if you change your mind and become a no-show.
