I am grateful for how far we have come. Like Jacob in the Bible who said, “For with my staff I passed over Jordan and now I have become two bands….” I also can proudly declare that the person that crossed the Atlantic Ocean in 2011 has greatly multiplied in all directions. Of all I have been blessed with, you two are the greatest of all. iii Acknowledgements …because it takes a village to write a dissertation In the time one takes to write a dissertation, one accumulates a string of debts that can never be fully repaid. One can only try, and do so employing words to convey the depth of one’s gratitude. First, my deep appreciation goes to my committee members: Profs. Joni Omi Jones, Lisa Thompson, Paul Bonin- Rodriguez, Charlotte Canning, and Toyin Falola. Thanks for all support, patience, love and understanding all through this project. I have worked with you in various capacities and every time you have helped me to become a better scholar and teacher. I am grateful to you all for the energy and effort you invested in my career throughout my time in the University of Texas at Austin. I must thank my family for all their support and prayers all through my time in the graduate school.

Nigeria is used in this work to represent Africa given the strong similarities that exist among the people and focused mainly on its three major religions. This work adopts historical method through library research to obtain the needed information. The study discovers a sect called Chrisislamherb that worship pluralistically as Christians, Moslems and traditionalists to show uniformity of religions in Nigeria. It concludes that, there is an element of God’s revelation in all the religions. It recommends that knowledge of all the religions is necessary and good relationship with the adherents could help the Christians in proclaiming the faith and breeding harmonious coexistence. Key words: religion, pluralism, theology, unity 1. Introduction The term religious pluralism has generated a number of questions for the theologians concerning the relationship between Christianity and other world religions. These include “if Christianity is the true religion, is it theologically and morally acceptable to maintain that one religion is uniquely true and that the others are incomplete or even false and why are there so many diverse religions in the world?”1 That and several other questions were addressed by some key figures in the debate of pluralist theology such as John Hick, Langdon Gilkey, Cantwell Smith and Raimundo Panikkar (John Hick & Paul F.

  • Refiguring Masculinity in Haitian Literature of Dictatorship, 1968-2010
NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY Dictating Manhood: Refiguring Masculinity in Haitian Literature of Dictatorship, 1968-2010 A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS for the degree DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY Field of French and Francophone Studies By Ara Chi Jung EVANSTON, ILLINOIS March 2018 2 Abstract Dictating Manhood: Refiguring Masculinity in Haitian Literature of Dictatorship, 1968- 2010 explores the literary representations of masculinity under dictatorship. Through the works of Marie Vieux Chauvet, René Depestre, Frankétienne, Georges Castera, Kettly Mars and Dany Laferrière, my dissertation examines the effects of dictatorship on Haitian masculinity and assesses whether extreme oppression can be generative of alternative formulations of masculinity, especially with regard to power. For nearly thirty years, from 1957 to 1986, François and Jean-Claude Duvalier imposed a brutal totalitarian dictatorship that privileged tactics of fear, violence, and terror. Through their instrumentalization of terror and violence, the Duvaliers created a new hegemonic masculinity articulated through the nodes of power and domination. Moreover, Duvalierism developed and promoted a masculine identity which fueled itself through the exclusion and subordination of alternative masculinities, reflecting the autophagic reflex of the dictatorial machine which consumes its own resources in order to power itself. My dissertation probes the structure of Duvalierist masculinity and argues that dictatorial literature not only contests dominant discourses on masculinity, but offers a healing space in which to process the trauma of the dictatorship. 3 Acknowledgements There is a Korean proverb that says, “백지장도 맞들면 낫다.” It is better to lift together, even if it is just a blank sheet of paper. It means that it is always better to do something with the help of other people, even something as simple as lifting a single sheet of paper.

religions Article Continuing Conjure: African-Based Spiritual Traditions in Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad and Jesmyn Ward’s Sing, Unburied, Sing James Mellis Guttman Community College, 50 West 40th St., New York, NY 10018, USA; [email protected] Received: 10 April 2019; Accepted: 23 June 2019; Published: 26 June 2019 Abstract: In 2016 and 2017, Colson Whitehead’s The Underground Railroad and Jesmyn Ward’s Sing, Unburied, Sing both won the National Book Award for fiction, the first time that two African-American writers have won the award in consecutive years. This article argues that both novels invoke African-based spirituality in order to create literary sites of resistance both within the narrative of the respective novels, but also within American culture at large. By drawing on a tradition of authors using African-based spiritual practices, particularly Voodoo, hoodoo, conjure and rootwork, Whitehead and Ward enter and engage in a tradition of African American protest literature based on African spiritual traditions, and use these traditions variously, both as a tie to an originary African identity, but also as protection and a locus of resistance to an oppressive society. That the characters within the novels engage in African spiritual traditions as a means of locating a sense of “home” within an oppressive white world, despite the novels being set centuries apart, shows that these traditions provide a possibility for empowerment and protest and can act as a means for contemporary readers to address their own political and social concerns. Keywords: voodoo; conjure; African-American literature; protest literature; African American culture; Whitehead; Ward; American literature; popular culture And we are walking together, cause we love one another There are ghosts at our table, they are feasting tonight.

  • Afroamerikanische Religionen
