Cordula BISCHOFF Dresden, seat of government and capital of present-day federal state Saxony, now benefits more than any other German city from its past as a royal residence. Despite war-related destructions is the cityscape today shaped by art and architecture with a history of 500 years. There is possibly no other place in Germany where to find so many exceptional artworks concentrated in such a small area. This accumulation is a result of the continuosly increasing significance of the Dresden court and a gain in power of the Saxon Wettin dynasty. The Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation was a conglomeration of more than 350 large and tiny territories. The 50 to 100 leading imperial princes struggled in a constant competition to maintain their positions. １） In 1547 the Saxon Duke Moritz（1521-1553）was declared elector. Thus Saxony gained enormous political significance, as the seven, in 18th century nine electors, were the highest-ranking princes. They elected the Roman-German emperor and served as his innermost councils. The electors of Saxony and of the Palatinate were authorised to represent the emperor in times of vacancy. At the same time in 16th century Saxony rose due to its silver mining industry to one of the richest German territorial states. ２） In the second half of the 17th century the Saxon court even counted among the most important European courts. FREDERICK THE GREAT‟S PORCELAIN DIVERSION: THE CHINESE TEA HOUSE AT SANSSOUCI Tania Solweig Shamy Department of Art History and Communication Studies McGill University, Montreal October 2009 A thesis submitted to McGill University in partial fulfillment of the requirements of the degree of doctor of philosophy. ©Tania Solweig Shamy 2009 Abstract This thesis signals a new approach in the study of the Chinese Tea House at Sanssouci. It argues that Frederick the Great‟s exotic pavilion, although made of sandstone and stucco, is porcelain in essence. The garden building reflects the many meanings of this highly valued commodity and art form in the privileged society of the king and his contemporaries. The pavilion is unique in that it was inspired by the type of sculptural ornament designed to decorate the eighteenth- century table of the nobility. The Tea House is a thematically integrated structure that demonstrates the influence of porcelain on interior décor and architecture. The designation of the garden building as a Gesamtkunstwerk acknowledges the blending of architecture, painting, and sculpture; characteristics shared by porcelain centerpieces. They exemplify the intermediality associated with the development of eighteenth- century porcelain and the interpretation of Frederick‟s pavilion. ii Résumé Cette thèse annonce une approche nouvelle dans l‟étude de la Maison de Thé Chinoise à Sans-Souci. Deutsche Bauzeitung, 10. April 1895 (No. 29, S. 181ff:) Zur Erinnerung an Constantin Lipsius Ein Jahr ist verflossen, seit in der Nacht vom 10. zum 11. April 1894, tief betrauert von seinen Schülern und der gesammten Fachgenossenschaft, der Lehrer der Architektur an der kgl. Akademie der bildenden Künste in Dresden, Baurath Professor C. Lipsius sein Leben voll- endet hat. Zufällige Umstände persönlicher Art haben es mit sich gebracht, dass die Deut- sche Bauzeitung, zu deren treuesten Gönnern und Freunden er von jeher gezählt hatte, sich damals mit einem kurzen Nachrufe an ihn begnügen musste. Ist es doch mir, dem die Trauernachricht erst geraume Zeit nachher in der Ferne zuging, nicht einmal vergönnt gewesen, dem verstorbenen Freunde die letzte Ehre zu erweisen. So will ich am Jahrestage seines Hinscheidens einen Kranz treuer Erinnerung auf seinen Grab- hügel niederlegen. Constantin Lipsius, am 20. Oktober 1832 in Leipzig geboren und der Sohn eines i. J. 1861 als Rektor der dortigen Thomasschule verstorbenen Philologen, entstammte einem alten sächsischen Gelehrtengeschlecht, das schon in früheren Jahrhunderten namhafte Männer hervorgebracht hat, durch ihn und seine Geschwister aber zu seiner höchsten Bedeutung sich emporschwingen sollte. Sein älterer, ihm im Tode vorangegangener Bruder war der be- kannte Professor der Theologie in Jena, der jüngere Bruder, gleich dem Vater Philologe, ist noch heute eine Zierde der Leipziger Universität; seine Schwester ist als Musik-Schriftstel- lerin geschätzt. Welche äusseren Anregungen s. Z. den in dieser Umgebung aufgewachsenen, auf dem Gymnasium geschulten Jüngling dazu bestimmt haben, den Beruf des Architekten zu wäh- len, ist mir unbekannt. Der in Sachsen übliche Ausbildungsgang eines solchen führte da- mals und führt in der Regel auch heute noch über eine Baugewerkschule zur Akademie der bildenden Künste in Dresden. -
