Budapest, 28 May 2018 _____________________ _____ Signature CEU eTD Collection Abstract In July 2015, City Hall of Radzyń Podlaski, a town located in Radzyń district in Lublin Voivodeship in eastern Poland, became an official owner of the town’s most prominent monument – the historic Potocki Palace complex. Throughout decades of various adaptations, only the structure of the Rococo residence remained close to the original; the interiors and gardens, however, were devastated. City Hall decided to begin an urban revitalization process and transform the palace and its vicinities into a modern cultural hub to serve the community of Radzyń district. In 2018, a management plan of the Potocki palace was prepared and some stages of the façade renovation completed. The challenge remains in obtaining funds sufficient to finalize the project. In this work, I assess the sustainability of the revitalization project and place it in the context of urban revitalization trends in Poland and worldwide. My research included interviews with decision-makers and cooperation with the local community, as well as analysis of the Polish monument protection system and recent investment projects in Radzyń district. A study of global tendencies and current needs of the Radzyń district shows that the heritage-based revitalization can enhance the development of human capital in the area, which will directly lead to the desired economic progress. The study concludes with recommendations of creative tools to promote the district’s cultural heritage further and advance the current management plan of the Potocki Palace. CEU eTD Collection i Acknowledgments I would like to thank my supervisors, Professor Tamás Fejérdy and Professor József Laszlovszky, for their constant support, fresh and helpful remarks which taught me maturity in research and ability to read my text from different perspectives, as well as for their patience towards my never- ending flow of new ideas. Further, this work would not be complete without priceless insight to the case which I owe to the representatives of Radzyń Podlaski City Hall, Radzyń District Governance Office, as well as two truly warm and helpful promoters of the “Radzyń the Land of Warmth” brand. Finally, I would like to express my endless gratitude to my grandparents, Zofia and Czesław, who are residents of Radzyń Podlaski, who inspired me and guided throughout the entire process, and who were the continuous source of support and good mood during my field work. And because the list of sincerely valuable people who contributed to this research and its final product is much longer, with my pillar of support Gautam on the top, I will not hesitate to thank all of them in person. W okresie panowania Michała Korybuta (1669–1673) był jednym z najbardziej aktywnych liderów opozycji i jednym z najbliższych współpracowników politycznych i wojskowych Sobieskiego.

Museums Established in Synagogues in Communist Poland: The Cases of Ła ´ncutand Włodawa Kinga Migalska Prints and Drawings Cabinet, National Museum in Kraków, 3 May Street, 30-062 Kraków, Poland; [email protected] Received: 9 November 2019; Accepted: 12 December 2019; Published: 17 December 2019 Abstract: World War II and the subsequent period of communist rule severely diminished the amount of historic Jewish architecture in Poland. It is estimated that in the mid-1990s there were about 321 synagogues and prayer houses in the country, all in various states of preservation. This article examines two case studies of synagogues that were salvaged by being transformed into Judaica museums. The first of these is the synagogue in Ła´ncutand the second concerns the complex of two synagogues and one prayer house in Włodawa. The article contains an analysis of both examples from the perspective of the following factors: the circumstances under which the institution was established, the place that the history and culture of Jews took in the Museum’s activity, the way that Judaica collections and exhibitions were constructed, the substantive, educational, and research activities that were undertaken, as well as the issue of what place these monuments occupy in the town’s landscape. Keywords: synagogues; Jewish heritage; Judaica 1. Introduction From the second half of the 1980s, a growing interest in the heritage of Polish Jews was noticeable both within the country and abroad. This phenomenon developed in the 1990s, and especially intensified after 2000 (Poland’s accession to the European Union in 2004 was a watershed in this regard).

SHORT NOTES SHORT NOTES* Acta Poloniae Historica 121, 2020 PL ISSN 0001–6829 GENERAL WORKS1 Krzysztof Łęcki, Według Tukidydesa. Rozważania socjologa literatury o „Wojnie peloponeskiej” [According to Thucydides. Refl ections of a Sociologist of Literature on History of the Peloponnesian War], Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Śląskiego, Katowice, 2019, 332 pp., bibliog., English and French sum. Thucydides of Athens remains an inspiration for students of history, politics, literature, and philosophy all over the Western world. The present study is an attempt at interpretation of his famous History of the Peloponnesian War from the point of view of the sociology of literature. Its main merit is clearly its erudition: one can get the impression that the book is a guide to the comments and citations regarding Thucydides made by a variety of scholars, philosophers, and poets. It seems that the author gathered evidence suggesting all possible interpretations of his protagonist’s monumental work. The impres- sive variety of opinions and comments on all aspects of Thucydides’ heritage by other authors, representing a true mélange of disciplines and approaches, makes it diffi cult however to determine if the author himself promotes, or indeed offers, any particular interpretation of his own. Neither is it easy to grasp what makes his approach representative of the sociology of literature. Instead, an illuminating, even if chaotic, introduction (which encompasses one third of the book), is followed by a chronological overview of the most important, or simply interesting, moments in Thucydides’ narrative. This selection does not seem highly original, as it is dominated by issues typically associated with ‘the father of historiography’: democracy and leadership, social divisions and tensions, the nature of the rivalry and hatred between Sparta and Athens, and the reasons for continuation of the exhausting confl ict, as well as Thucydides’ moral and psychological judgments.

In the article Polish and Ukrainian historians will analyze scientific achievements of researchers, who in the Polish and Ukrainian historiography occupy a prominent place as regards the haidamak movements and Koliyivsh- chyna, i.e. Franciszek Rawita-Gawroński, Władysław A. Serczyk, Petr Mirchuk, and Grigorij Hraban. Authors agree with the opinion that the historian does not judge, but tries to understand. The common Polish-Ukrainian research program on the haidamaks and Koliyivshchyna, thanks to which at least necessary que- ries and a discrepancy report will be developed, remains a main postulate. Only in that way the vivid use of history for current ideology and shaping of young generation will be minimized. Unfortunately,PNH apart from substantive arguments, still there will remain other arguments of ideological or political context. The point is, however, that a discourse on Polish-Ukrainian relations in various epochs should be reduced to a normal scientific discussion that should take into account limitations resulting from cultural imputation only, the fact that has not been preserved on the part of both Ukrainian, and Polish side so far.
