J’adresse mes profonds remerciements à tous ceux qui, de près ou de loin ont pris part à la réalisation de ce mémoire. iii RESUME Une étude de la taxonomie d’une espèce se développant en complexe, Calumma nasutum, a été réalisée pour tenter de résoudre les difficultés d’identification sur le terrain. La complexité et la grande variabilité des caractères morphologiques induisent en erreur et plusieurs espèces sont souvent classées en synonymie. La présente étude a pour but de détecter les caractères pouvant séparer des types morphologiques rencontrés parmi les individus de cette espèce. Un inventaire par observation directe et fouille systématique, réalisé de janvier à mars 2006, a permis de collecter 61 spécimens dans 10 sites ainsi que des données géographiques et écologiques. En laboratoire, une étude approfondie des caractères morphométriques et méristiques a été réalisée sur les échantillons. Les données obtenues ont, ensuite, fait l’objet d’une série d’analyses des composantes principales en tenant compte du sexe, du genre et de la distribution géographique. Trois morphotypes ont été détectés chez les mâles de Calumma nasutum et deux autres types observés correspondent respectivement à Calumma gallus et Calumma cf. nasutum. Ainsi, 19 caractères méristiques et morphométriques ont été utilisés pour l’identification et pour la détection des trois formes intra spécifiques probables de C. nasutum. Néanmoins, une grande variabilité de la majorité des caractères sélectionnés pour cette étude a été observée dans l’ensemble des individus de cette espèce. Ce résultat illustre bien la stochasticité phénotypique de l’espèce en laissant apparaître le degré probable d’évolution des caractères génétiques. L’espèce étudiée pourrait être en pleine évolution vers une radiation adaptive. Mots clés : complexe, radiation adaptive, Calumma nasutum, morphologie, morphométrie, Est, Littoral Est, Madagascar. iv ABSTRACT A taxonomic study of a species that is evolving into complex, Calumma nasutum, was carried out in order to attempt to solve field identification issues. The complexity as well as the high variability of morphological characters are often misleading in field identification and numerous species are considered as being synonymous. This study aims to detect morphological characters that potentially separate morphological types found among individuals belonging to this species. From January until March 2006, a field work using standard field techniques allowed to gather 61 specimens from 10 sites, as well as some geographical and ecological data. In the laboratory, a morphometric and meristic depth study was carried out on the samples. Collected data were then subjected to a series of analyzes of the main components of meristic and morphometric characters that take into account sex, gender and geographical distribution. As far as concern sexes and distribution, three morphotypes were spotted among males of Calumma nasutum. Two others types corresponded as being Calumma gallus and Calumma cf. nasutum. Moreover, 19 morphometric and meristic characters helped to separate these three intraspecific clusters among males of Calumma nasutum. However, a large variability of the majority of characters selected for this study was observed in all individuals of the species Calumma nasutum. These results illustrated the phenotypic stochasticity of the species in revealing the probable degree of evolution of genetic characters. Nonetheless, Calumma nasutum group might be evolving towards an adaptive radiation. Nocturnal searches for chameleons were conducted along transects within relatively intact forest and vegetation on abandoned agricultural land adjacent to the forest. Four chameleon species were encountered during the study, Brookesia superciliaris, Calumma parsonii parsonii, Calumma nasutum and Furcifer pardalis. Brookesia superciliaris was most common inside relatively intact forest and the few individuals located in the regenerating forest on abandoned agricultural land were found in tiny, isolated patches of degraded rainforest next to rivers. Calumma p. parsonii was only encountered on three occasions in relatively intact forest and was a rare member of the community. The abundance of C. nasutum was highest in relatively intact forest but this species also occurred in vegetation on abandoned agricultural land. Furcifer pardalis was only found on the abandoned agricultural land, where it was observed laying eggs in sandy soil in August. The abundance of all species in habitats alongside rivers was higher in January than July–August, with the exception of C. p. parsonii, which was not detected during the former period. Additional investigations into habitat preference of chameleons and surveys in other forests in region are needed to establish whether the low abundance of C.

Calumma species occurred at relatively high densities and were restricted to humid forest with the occasional occurrence of C. hilleniusi in savanna. Furcifer minor and Furcifer lateralis were common in both tapia (Uapaca spp.) forest and agricultural land while F. campani was restricted to savanna and heathland. We report on the results of a survey of amphibians and reptiles at several primary and secondary lowland habi- tats along Madagascar’s east coast. The survey yielded a total of 106 species (61 amphibians and 45 reptiles). Comparisons of mitochondrial DNA sequences of selected amphibian and reptile species confirmed their identification and in some cases allowed to assign them to particular intraspecific genetic lineages. The highest species diversity was found in the pri- mary lowland rainforests of Ambodiriana and Sahafina. The littoral forests of Tampolo and Vohibola held overall a higher species diversity than the anthropogenic secondary forest formations of Vatomandry and Mahanoro. Structural differ- ences between lowland forests and littoral forests seem to cause a difference in species composition, especially relevant for the amphibian species assemblages. Besides a number of undescribed species, the most remarkable records were those of Mantidactylus majori, Uroplatus lineatus and Blaesodactylus antongilensis in the Sahafina forest at Madagascar’s central east coast, which constitute significant range extensions for these species.

External sexual dimorphism is widespread in chameleons, with the most consistently dimorphic traits being body size, head size, ornamentation, and coloration. The Calumma nasutum group differs from many other Malagasy chameleons by the presence of nasal appendages in both sexes rather than in males only. Here, we compare measurements and scale counts of males and females of a population of one species of this group, Calumma boettgeri, from its type locality, the Malagasy offshore island Nosy Be. We found only weak evidence for a differentiation of males and females in this species which did not show significant dimorphism in body size. Univariate tests revealed differences among sexes in size-corrected length of hind limbs (longer in males), relative length of temporal edge (longer in males) and number of spines of dorsal crests (higher in males). Several measurements and scale counts proposed and defined herein might in the future be used to more efficiently delimit species in the Calumma nasutum group. Keywords. E-mail: [email protected] Abstract We revise the taxonomic status of two species of Madagascan chameleons in light of a recent molecular phylogenetic study on the Calumma nasutum group. The investigation of morphological and osteological characters led to a clear de- lineation between two species within the C. boettgeri complex, C. boettgeri and C. linotum. Calumma linotum has been considered either a synonym of C. boettgeri or a dubious, poorly defined taxon. So far it has only been known from the male holotype with the imprecise locality ‘Madagascar’. Based on pholidosis, morphological measurements and charac- ters of the skull that were analyzed using micro-X-ray computed tomography (micro-CT) scans, we ascribe the population of chameleons from Montagne d’Ambre, formerly assigned to C. boettgeri, to C. linotum. Calumma linotum differs from C. boettgeri in the larger size of tubercle scales on the extremities and rostral appendage, the larger diameter of the ex- tremities relative to the body size, the presence of a parietal crest as well as the form of the nasal bones and the anterior tip of the frontal.
