Jill, this thesis is dedicated to you. ix Summary This study argues that society's choices between possible technological developments are highly reflective of patterns of political, social, and economic power. Employing insights from recent historical and sociological work on class, gender, consumption and technology the processes by which social relations shaped the design, marketing and uses of the car are explained. In turn, it is argued that the legal and physical infrastructure which developed in the car's wake were extremely expressive of class and gender relations. The interwar years are studied because it was during this period, when the car as a technology was still open to contestation, that the British car culture was defined. This was so because it was during the 1920s and 1930s that car ownership became a reality for millions of middle-class Britons. An analysis of the symbolic, as well as the utilitarian, benefits of ownership is offered and reveals the car's role in the expression of social and gender identity. The extent to which these factors impinged upon the actions of car manufacturers and motor dealers is also related. This perspective and the use of oral evidence has unearthed significant new evidence about the composition of the motoring community. The process through which influential sections of opinion reached a concordance with the car is explained. As it became increasingly useful for them, the professional and commercial middle-classes swung against significant restrictions on car use. Pre-1914 they were often outraged by the danger and inconvenience that were inevitable side effects of rising car ownership. However, once owners themselves they were increasingly attracted to new ideas about road safety which placed more and more emphasis on the education and segregation of other road users. The influential pro-motoring lobby manipulated these developments, a factor which is investigated here for the first time. This event will undoubtedly be recorded with the publication of a plethora of popular histories marking the car's benefits and achievements. This, therefore, seems an opportune moment to record the findings of four years of research, driven by a desire to offer rather more of a critique of motoring's evolution than has usually been the case. British social historians have largely neglected the history of motoring. Of those who have broached the subject the best have been weakened by an over-ambitious scope, seeking to cover a century of every aspect of motoring. The less rigorous studies have revealed an almost boyish enthralment with their subject, which is misplaced in a serious academic study. This thesis will argue that the car must be viewed as a technology that was subject to contestation amongst a variety of social, economic and political factors. The approach taken here is, therefore, motivated by a desire to overcome the problems found in earlier work. Although there is much still to say about the social history of the car in Britain, it cannot all be related here.

The locus classicus of the credit-boom view of economic cycles is the expansion of the 1920s and the Great Depression. In this paper we ask how well quantitative measures of the credit boom phenomenon can explain the uneven expansion of the 1920s and the slump of the 1930s. We complement this macroeconomic analysis with three sectoral studies that shed further light on the explanatory power of the credit boom interpretation: the property market, consumer durables industries, and high-tech sectors. We conclude that the credit boom view provides a useful perspective on both the boom of the 1920s and the subsequent slump.

Thesis - submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Leicester by Pál Négyesi School of Museum Studies University of Leicester October 2018 1 Abstract How the motor museum saw the automobile: Curating the automobile as commodity, as design and as social history in Germany and Austria in the 20th century – from national identity to mobility. The automobile has defined the 20th century. It has brought along radical changes in mobility, altered the landscape, transformed communities and everyday life. Although this complex object has been shown in museums for over a century, an in-depth academic study which looks at the different institutions and changing curatorial practices around the automobile has been lacking. This thesis charts the evolution of the motor museum in Germany and Austria. Here the motor museum is being defined as a museum where automobiles are displayed. It includes science, technical, industrial museums, local history museums and company museums. This thesis draws upon the work of Lubar (Lubar&Kingery,1993) and Divall (Divall&Scott,2001) in order to conceptualise the car as a museum object and as an object of material culture. With the help of fifteen case studies it analyses the different type of museums, their development, their curatorial practices and their permanent and temporary exhibitions, in order to understand the different roles the automobile has played (and is playing) in these institutions.

    1 History and Evolution Unit of Automobiles INTRODUCTION You must have heard the word automobile. The meaning of automobile can be an auto car, motor car or car. It is a wheeled motor vehicle used for transporting goods or passengers, which also carries its own engine or motor. The word automobile comes from the ancient Greek word αὐτός (autós, meaning ‘self’) and the Latin word mobilis (movable), therefore automobile means a vehicle that moves itself. The alternative name, ‘car’ is believed to have originated from the Latin word carrus or carrum (wheeled vehicle), or the Middle English word carre (cart) (from Old North French). These words in turn are said to have originated from the Gaulish word karros (a Gallic chariot). The light may well be shining down the tunnel now but we are still restricted for our own good and there have been a number of shows that are being cancelled still. Mainly be- cause the planning has to start now for events in a few months time. Rodger is keeping up with this and the events list is cur- rent up to 29th March, other changes will be reported via members only Facebook page, club website and the event themselves. It is still fairly unclear when things can get going again, depends on the sensibility or stupidity of our popula- tion and politicians. It is getting better, vaccination seems to be going very well so it does look like we will be able to start planning a bit soon. Fingers crossed. The cold and gloom of winter, although impressive in it’s own right, is giving way to spring. Things are warming up, even though some days are a bit dodgy, and the usual heralds of the new year are the early bulbs brightening up the gardens. Birds are in and out of my hedge nesting and arguing, seeds are popping up in the greenhouse and I have made a start on the cars. I plan to build up slowly after my partial hibernation so have been out and changed the rear brake shoes on the Herald.

Advertising is a critically important and profoundly complex medium for the mass dissemination of music and musical meaning. Advertisers and marketers therefore offer crucial perspectives on the construction, reification, and circulation of jazz meanings and discourses. At the same time, I argue that historically jazz has been a cultural practice that is uniquely situated on the cusp of the binarized cultural categories of “high art” and “popular/commercial”. With that in mind, I suggest that jazz offers an invaluable lens through which to examine the complex and often contradictory culture of consumption upon which North American capitalism is predicated. In a broad sense, then, I examine the confluence of jazz, consumption, and capitalism as they are articulated through the medium of advertising. ii I contextualize my analysis with a short history of music in advertising and a discussion of jazz’s embeddedness in capitalism and the North American culture of consumption. The core of the dissertation consists of three detailed case studies: an analysis of jazz and luxury in a 2003 Chrysler Canada campaign for the high-end cars Sebring and 300M, featuring Diana Krall; a discussion of the function of jazz in the spectacularization of cultural diversity and individual agency in the television campaign for a 2006 Diet Pepsi product called “Jazz”; and an examination of corporate amorality in the Toronto Dominion Bank’s sponsorship of jazz festivals in Canada.

One of the primary functions of the South Walton Fire District Board of Fire Commissioners is to ensure that your tax dollars are accounted for properly and are being utilized in a manner that provides sound planning and good stewardship. SWFD’s independent auditors' report for the year ended September 30, 2017 was received by the Fire Board at its January 2018 meeting. The report is prepared by Warren Averett Certified Public Accountants after completing an audit of the District in accordance with "Government Auditing Standards" which are issued by the Comptroller General of the United States. I am pleased to report that the opinion of the auditors are that the South Walton Fire District is again assessed to be in "Sound Financial Condition".
