ISSN 1020-0959 (print) ISSN 1682-7678 (online) Abstract The experience of the 1990s renewed economists’ interest in the role of credit in macroeconomic fluctuations. The locus classicus of the credit-boom view of economic cycles is the expansion of the 1920s and the Great Depression. In this paper we ask how well quantitative measures of the credit boom phenomenon can explain the uneven expansion of the 1920s and the slump of the 1930s. We complement this macroeconomic analysis with three sectoral studies that shed further light on the explanatory power of the credit boom interpretation: the property market, consumer durables industries, and high-tech sectors. We conclude that the credit boom view provides a useful perspective on both the boom of the 1920s and the subsequent slump. -

How the Motor Museum Saw the Automobile: Curating the Automobile as Commodity, as Design and as Social History in Germany and Austria in the 20th Century from National Identity to Mobility. Thesis - submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Leicester by Pál Négyesi School of Museum Studies University of Leicester October 2018 1 Abstract How the motor museum saw the automobile: Curating the automobile as commodity, as design and as social history in Germany and Austria in the 20th century – from national identity to mobility. The automobile has defined the 20th century. It has brought along radical changes in mobility, altered the landscape, transformed communities and everyday life. Although this complex object has been shown in museums for over a century, an in-depth academic study which looks at the different institutions and changing curatorial practices around the automobile has been lacking. This thesis charts the evolution of the motor museum in Germany and Austria. Here the motor museum is being defined as a museum where automobiles are displayed. It includes science, technical, industrial museums, local history museums and company museums. This thesis draws upon the work of Lubar (Lubar&Kingery,1993) and Divall (Divall&Scott,2001) in order to conceptualise the car as a museum object and as an object of material culture. With the help of fifteen case studies it analyses the different type of museums, their development, their curatorial practices and their permanent and temporary exhibitions, in order to understand the different roles the automobile has played (and is playing) in these institutions. -

1 History and Evolution Unit of Automobiles INTRODUCTION You must have heard the word automobile. The meaning of automobile can be an auto car, motor car or car. It is a wheeled motor vehicle used for transporting goods or passengers, which also carries its own engine or motor. The word automobile comes from the ancient Greek word αὐτός (autós, meaning ‘self’) and the Latin word mobilis (movable), therefore automobile means a vehicle that moves itself. The alternative name, ‘car’ is believed to have originated from the Latin word carrus or carrum (wheeled vehicle), or the Middle English word carre (cart) (from Old North French). These words in turn are said to have originated from the Gaulish word karros (a Gallic chariot). Most definitions of the term specify that automobiles are designed to run primarily on roads, have seating for one or more people, typically have four wheels and are constructed principally for the transport of people and goods. In this Unit, you will understand the concept of a wheel and the role of a wheel cart. You will also learn the various stages of development over several hundred Unit 1.indd 1 3/11/2021 12:00:33 PM years that made possible the invention of an automobile as we know it today. SESSION 1: INVENTION OF WHEEL The wheel is considered as one of the most important mechanical inventions of all times. The wheel has been used by man since the beginning of civilisation. The light may well be shining down the tunnel now but we are still restricted for our own good and there have been a number of shows that are being cancelled still. Mainly be- cause the planning has to start now for events in a few months time. Rodger is keeping up with this and the events list is cur- rent up to 29th March, other changes will be reported via members only Facebook page, club website and the event themselves. It is still fairly unclear when things can get going again, depends on the sensibility or stupidity of our popula- tion and politicians. It is getting better, vaccination seems to be going very well so it does look like we will be able to start planning a bit soon. Fingers crossed. The cold and gloom of winter, although impressive in it’s own right, is giving way to spring. Things are warming up, even though some days are a bit dodgy, and the usual heralds of the new year are the early bulbs brightening up the gardens. Birds are in and out of my hedge nesting and arguing, seeds are popping up in the greenhouse and I have made a start on the cars. I plan to build up slowly after my partial hibernation so have been out and changed the rear brake shoes on the Herald. -

Bulletin Board This year's National Rally was certainly down on attendance (may be 5 Warm Welcome caused by the change in date) but certainly not on the quality of the vehicles on show. The MVA clubs certainly helped boost the attendance What's it Worth? which offset the lower turnout of the Register and helped a great deal. A 6/7 Forum Files lot of hard work goes in to organising an event like this and your support makes it all worthwhile. Next year we are back to our usual slot and I 8-13 Exactly Eighty hope to see more of you then. Ben Gadsby our rally organiser already 14/15 Pictures from the Past has plans for a different format so let us wait and see. Jazzvertising: Music, Marketing, and Meaning by Mark Laver A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Ethnomusicology Faculty of Music University of Toronto © Copyright by Mark Laver 2011 Jazzvertising: Music, Marketing, and Meaning Mark Laver Doctor of Philosophy in Ethnomusicology Faculty of Music University of Toronto 2011 Abstract This dissertation examines jazz from the perspective of advertisers and marketers that have used the music with a view to unraveling the complicated web of cultural meanings and values that attend to jazz in the 21st century. Advertising is a critically important and profoundly complex medium for the mass dissemination of music and musical meaning. Advertisers and marketers therefore offer crucial perspectives on the construction, reification, and circulation of jazz meanings and discourses. At the same time, I argue that historically jazz has been a cultural practice that is uniquely situated on the cusp of the binarized cultural categories of “high art” and “popular/commercial”. With that in mind, I suggest that jazz offers an invaluable lens through which to examine the complex and often contradictory culture of consumption upon which North American capitalism is predicated. In a broad sense, then, I examine the confluence of jazz, consumption, and capitalism as they are articulated through the medium of advertising. ii I contextualize my analysis with a short history of music in advertising and a discussion of jazz’s embeddedness in capitalism and the North American culture of consumption. The core of the dissertation consists of three detailed case studies: an analysis of jazz and luxury in a 2003 Chrysler Canada campaign for the high-end cars Sebring and 300M, featuring Diana Krall; a discussion of the function of jazz in the spectacularization of cultural diversity and individual agency in the television campaign for a 2006 Diet Pepsi product called “Jazz”; and an examination of corporate amorality in the Toronto Dominion Bank’s sponsorship of jazz festivals in Canada. -
