Both have longstanding traditions. The Institut International de Philosophie (IIP) was founded during the momentous année Descartes of 1937 and its meet- ings have taken place on a yearly basis (with the exception of 1939 to 1946 because of World War Two). Its first president was Léon Robin. Past pres- idents during the last four decades were Georg Henrik von Wright, Max Black, Paul Ricoeur, Jerzy Pelc, David Pears, Ruth Barcan Marcus, Evan- dro Agazzi, Tomonobu Imamichi, Jaakko Hintikka, Anne Fagot-Largeault, Hans Lenk, Tomás Calvo Martínez and Enrico Berti. Ioanna Kuçuradi is currently the president and Bernard Bourgeois the secretary general. To date, its membership lists 102 philosophers from forty-four countries. Its several committees are concerned with international communication and coopera- tion in philosophy from the point of view of reason and tolerance. A con- stant focus is placed on the mutual opening of philosophical cultures, tra- ditions and approaches.1 The Istituto per il Lessico Intellettuale Europeo of the National Research Council of Italy (LIE and since 2001 ILIESI) was founded in 1964 and has been hosting its own international meetings every three years. We are count- ing fifty-five Entretiens de l’Institut International de Philosophie and fifteen Colloqui Internazionali del Lessico Intellettuale Europeo. The ILIESI is ded- icated to the history of cultural and scientific terminology. It focuses on the phenomenon of cultural migration, which accompanies the whole history of civilizations while involving continuous relations and reciprocal exchanges among diverse cultures, and thus translations (in their widest sense) of texts and modules from one to another context, be it linguistic, economic, politi- cal, or cultural. Its researchers investigate several epochs under the assump- tion that at the root of the history of philosophy and of the sciences and 1 R. KLIBANS K I , Idées sans frontières: Histoire et structures de l’Institut International de Phi- losophie, Paris, Les Belles Lettres, 2005. 4 Hansmichael Hohenegger - Riccardo Pozzo more generally of the history of ideas lie textual corpora that have been de- veloped in the context of each discipline over the centuries.2 Today, the «Lessico Intellettuale Europeo» series, which was started in 1967, boasts 124 volumes. And we find it extremely inspiring that volume 125 of the series hosts the sixty-third IIP meeting, which is its sixth meeting in Italy, after Venice in 1958 (in coincidence with the twelfth World Con- gress of Philosophy), L’Aquila in 1964, Bellagio in 1982, Palermo in 1985 and Santa Margherita/Genova in 1989. All presentations but one that were given at the Entretiens de Rome of the Institut International de Philosophie on 24-28 September 2014 have found their way to this volume. Appropriate funding was provided by the Italian Ministry for Education, University and Research within the PRIN2012 “Universalism and its Limits”, unit coordinator Riccardo Pozzo and national coordinator Loris Sturlese. The four papers contributed by Giovanni Pugli- si, Hans Poser, Evandro Agazzi and Enrico Berti were read at the meeting of the Committee on the History of Philosophy of the Fédération Interna- tionale des Sociétés de Philosophie (FISP) dedicated to the textual basis of the intercultural history of philosophy – Migrating Alphabets, which took place in Rome in the Aula Marconi at the main seat of the National Re- search Council of Italy on 11 January 2011.3 2 A. ANTONIO LAMARRA directeur de l’Istituto per il Lessico Intellettuale Europeo e Storia delle Idee M. le Président, chers Collègues, Mesdames et Messieurs, J’ai le plaisir de souhaiter la bienvenue au nom de vous tous aux mem- bres de l’Institut International de Philosophie et à leurs invités, qui se réu- nissent aujourd’hui ici à Villa Mirafiori pour la séance d’ouverture de leur conférence annuelle. Les Entretiens de cette prestigieuse institution cultu- relle constituent toujours des rendez-vous majeurs pour la communauté des savants en raison de l’ampleur et du relief des thèmes proposés à chaque fois comme centre de réflexion et de débat. Ce fut donc avec enthousias- me que j’ai accepté la proposition de Riccardo Pozzo, Directeur du Dépar- tement des Sciences Humaines et Sociales du CNR, de confier à l’ILIESI l’organisation de ce congrès, qui amène pour la première fois à Rome les Entretiens de l’Institut International de Philosophie. Le sujet qui a été choisi cette année pour cette rencontre exige une ré- flexion de la philosophie sur soi-même, sur les multiples traditions qu’elle a développé dans le temps et dont elle s’est si souvent nourrie, pas moins que sur son engagement théorique et sa capacité de relever les défis de l’exis- tence autant que de la société. Face aux problèmes auxquels la philosophie est confrontée, deux attitudes fondamentales sont possibles : celle du phi- losophe qui cherche à développer ses propres réponses en toute indépen- dance théorique, ou bien celle de l’historien de la philosophie, plus intéres- sé à comprendre les réponses que ces mêmes problèmes ont déjà reçu au fil d’une tradition millénaire. Dans les deux cas, il me semble, la philosophie et son histoire sont mu- tuellement impliquées, au moins implicitement, sauf s’imaginer que la réflexion philosophique puisse à chaque fois recommencer à partir du degré zéro de la connaissance, ou bien qu’on puisse écrire l’histoire de théories et concepts dont on ne comprend pas la nature et les implications plus profondes. De ce point de vue, celle du philosophe et celle de l’historien de la philosophie n’indiquent pas tellement des conditions individuelles permanentes et presque essentielles, mais plutôt des fonctions différentes, qui peuvent être exercées d’une manière plus ou moins prévalent suivant les cas et les situations. 6 Antonio Lamarra Des relations très complexes entre philosophie et histoire de la philo- sophie traversent, comme autant de fils rouges, le développement tout en- tier de la tradition philosophique. S’il est vrai que la réflexion philosophi- que est d’autant plus féconde, plus elle se nourrit de problèmes et d’idées générés par le monde, infiniment varié, des expériences individuelles et so- ciales, il n’est pas moins vrai d’ailleurs, comme a été souligné à plusieurs reprises par le fondateur du notre Institut, Tullio Gregory, qu’elle réutilise inévitablement les outils linguistiques et conceptuels offerts par la tradition, dans un processus continu de réappropriations ou de négations ou encore d’élaboration de nouvelles définitions.

Deciding what to publish, and for whom, was no easy matter, still some thirty years after the twin trials of Orazio Morandi and Galileo Galilei. “But if you choose to write to the common citizens of Bo- logna to persuade them about the calumnies made against truth,” Borelli con- tinued, “I conceive that in this case you may use every effort to deride any per- son who peddles a pile of idiocies just to offend virtuous and meritorious people.” 1 Of course, for Borelli, “virtuous and meritorious people” meant per- sons who followed empirical method for the study of nature, exemplified by Galileo; and “truth” meant the truth drawn from the use of that method. “Idio- cies” meant ideas conceived by those whom the Galileians conceived as dogma- tists and mystifiers. Still in the 1660s, whether Galileo’s disciples and their followers would triumph against the dogmatists and mystifiers was by no means clear. The story of their campaign to capture public attention, with all its fits and starts, is far less well known than the content of their ideas. It will occupy us here.

Some of the 25 pieces in the collection are published here for the first time, others appeared earlier in journals such as Arago’s Annales de Chimie et de Physique and the Journal de Physique.

L’attenzione è rivolta al processo di matematizzazione che subisce il moto locale nel momento in cui nasce la meccanica moderna, per analizzarne le condizioni di realizzazione e le caratteristiche principali. Il moto locale, una questione dibattuta all’interno della filosofia naturale, diventa cinematica, cioè scienza. Si mostrerà che la strutturazione di un nuovo concetto di velocità è l’evento decisivo che porta l’accezione ingenua e intuitiva della tradizione, ad assumere l’accezione tecnico-operativa di grandezza continua. La natura della continuità è inscindibile dalla nozione di infinito e l’analisi di questo legame è la chiave di lettura proposta. This research presents in a different way the new science of motion described in Galileo’s Discourses (1638) and in Evangelista Torricelli’s Geometrical Work (1644). We will focus on how the local motion has been mathematized at the beginning of the modern mechanics in order to analyse its conditions and main features.

The reason is not only that its chronology is defective and that in its latest reprint the edition is difficult to handle even for expert readers, but also that, after more than hundred years, the problems raised by the correspondence deserve a fresh examination. A grant by the Netherlands Organisation of scientific Research (NWO), ‘Towards a new critical edition of Descartes’, allowed me, not only to direct three Ph.D. theses (on Descartes’ cor- respondence with Regius by Erik-Jan Bos, on the Latin translation of the Dis- cours and the ‘essais’ by Corinna Vermeulen and on the publication history of Descartes’ works in the 17th century by Matthijs van Otegem), which can be seen as pilot studies for any new edition of Descartes’ works, but more specifically to lay the foundations for a new critical edition of Descartes’ correspondence.
