ISBN 90-393-3583-0 (ISSN 0927-3395) PREFACE There is little disagreement that the standard edition of Descartes by Charles Adam and Paul Tannery (known as AT) should be redone, in any case as far as the correspondence is concerned. The reason is not only that its chronology is defective and that in its latest reprint the edition is difficult to handle even for expert readers, but also that, after more than hundred years, the problems raised by the correspondence deserve a fresh examination. A grant by the Netherlands Organisation of scientific Research (NWO), ‘Towards a new critical edition of Descartes’, allowed me, not only to direct three Ph.D. theses (on Descartes’ cor- respondence with Regius by Erik-Jan Bos, on the Latin translation of the Dis- cours and the ‘essais’ by Corinna Vermeulen and on the publication history of Descartes’ works in the 17th century by Matthijs van Otegem), which can be seen as pilot studies for any new edition of Descartes’ works, but more specifically to lay the foundations for a new critical edition of Descartes’ correspondence. Together with Erik-Jan Bos, Matthijs van Otegem and Corinna Vermeulen and helped by an assistant (Hanneke Wit, Hans Diepenveen, Roeland Roelofs and Maarten van Houte successively) we worked through the correspondence, start- ing with vol. 1 of AT, noting our remarks, questions, our findings and amassing a vast amount of data, which were consigned to a data-base. In 2002 a grant of my department allowed me to continue this work with two post-docs, Erik-Jan Bos and Jeroen van de Ven. Another Ph.D. student, Mark Aalderink, joined the group in October 2003. Drawing on what was achieved during all those years, we now present as a first specimen an edition of the correspondence of the year 1643, meant, not only to show that we can make a difference, but also to see whether the format we have chosen is the right one. The year 1643 was chosen first of all because it is highly representative of Descartes’ correspondence as a whole. It comprises letters written in French, Latin and even Dutch. The material on which the edition is based consists of all kinds of sources: autograph letters, manuscript copies, minutes printed by Clerselier and abstracts published by Baillet. It is also a very interesting year in Descartes’ life, situated as it is between the publication of his two main works, the Meditationes (1641) and the Principia (1644). It is also a year of much agita- tion. The Utrecht Crisis, which seemed to be buried with the Judgment of March 1642 was reanimated by Descartes in his Epistola ad Dinetum, published as an appendix to the second edition of the Meditations (Amsterdam: Elzevier, 1642), which in turn led to new developments in Utrecht, culminating with the publi- cation of Admiranda methodus (1643) by Martinus Schoock, closely followed by Descartes’ own Epistola ad Voetium. Finally, in the correspondence of that year Descartes deals with a great variety of subjects, philosophical, medical, physical and mathematical. The present edition is typically the work of a team. Even so, each of the team had his/her own responsibility. The introduction was written by Erik-Jan Bos and me. The edition of the letters was largely done by Erik-Jan Bos, with for v some letters the help of Corinna Vermeulen (Letters 15, 25, 26, 33, 34, 39). My colleagues Henk Bos (Utrecht University, history of mathematics) and Carla Rita Palmerino (Radboud University, Nijmegen, history of physics) made important contributions to the commentary of Letters 4, 9, 11, 12, 13, 16, 17, 21, 22, 58, 59, 61. Henk Bos also wrote Appendix 3. The biographical lexicon was compiled by Jeroen van de Ven. Technical help was provided by Xander Schrijen.     HUYGENS ON TRANSLATION Theo Hermans 1 The tercentenary of the death of Constantijn Huygens (1596-1687) presents a convenient occasion to trace the views held by this versatile and multilingual writer on the subject of translation. A first inventory of Huygens' pronouncements on the matter is all that will be attempted here. The choice of Huygens is not dictated by commemorative considerations alone. Both the contemporary appreciation of his work as a translator – notably of John Donne – and the fact that, as in Vondel's case, some of Huygens' comments on translation are echoed and occasionally challenged by other translators, indicate that his approach to the subject is sufficiently central to be treated as a point of reference. 2 Huygens' extraordinary gifts as a linguist are well known, as is the fact that he began to write poems in Latin at the age of 11 and in French at 16, two years before he tried his hand at Dutch verse. It has been calculated that of the more than 75,000 lines of verse in Worp's edition of Huygens' Collected Poems, 64.3% are in Dutch, 26.4% in Latin and 8.7% in French, with Italian, Greek, German and Spanish making up the remaining 0.6% (Van Seggelen 1987:72). His skill as a multilingual versifier can be breathtaking: in one of his more playful polyglot moods he presents his friend Jacob van der Burgh with an "Olla podrida" poem, dated 11 March 1625, with lines in Dutch, Latin, Greek, Italian, French, Spanish, German and English (Ged. II: 111-13).

    The volcanic foundation of Dutch architecture: Use of Rhenish tuff and trass in the Netherlands in the past two millennia Timo G. Nijland 1, Rob P.J. van Hees 1,2 1 TNO, PO Box 49, 2600 AA Delft, the Netherlands 2 Faculty of Architecture, Delft University of Technology, Delft, the Netherlands Occasionally, a profound but distant connection between volcano and culture exists. This is the case between the volcanic Eifel region in Germany and historic construction in the Netherlands, with the river Rhine as physical and enabling connection. Volcanic tuff from the Eifel comprises a significant amount of the building mass in Dutch built heritage. Tuffs from the Laacher See volcano have been imported and used during Roman occupation (hence called Römer tuff). It was the dominant dimension stone when construction in stone revived from the 10th century onwards, becoming the visual mark of Romanesque architecture in the Netherlands. Römer tuff gradually disappeared from the market from the 12th century onwards. Early 15th century, Weiberner tuff from the Riedener caldera, was introduced for fine sculptures and cladding; it disappears from use in about a century. Late 19th century, this tuff is reintroduced, both for restoration and for new buildings. In this period, Ettringer tuff, also from the Riedener caldera, is introduced for the first time. Ground Römer tuff (Rhenish trass) was used as a pozzolanic addition to lime mortars, enabling the hydraulic engineering works in masonry that facilitated life and economics in the Dutch delta for centuries. A SENTIMENTAL JOURNEY GANDOLFO CASCIO UTRECHT UNIVERSITY Abstract Constantijn Huygens (1596-1687) in 1620 traveled to Venice as a secretary of ambassador Van Aerssen: he was the only member of the legation who knew Italian. This visit to the Most Serene Republic has been extremely important to him, since he could experience the many natural and artistic wonders he had a mere abstract knowledge of. However, in his life the Dutch poet made a more interesting journey: an intellectual and sentimental one, writing his Pathodia sacra et profana. In this collection we have compositions written in Italian in the very fashionable style of Petrarch. In my essay, I will try to make an historic-philological analysis of this opus in order to establish how the original paradigm has been respected or violated, both in style as well as content. In the Application and the Memorial, the Government of Cambodia's claim to Phra Viharn was based both on the Treaty of 1904 and on the map (Annex 1) isçued in Paris in 1908 and attri- buted to the "Commission of Delimitation between Indo-China and Siam". It was also contended that this rnap had been formally approved by the Protocol annexed to the Treaty of 1907 (Appli- cation, para. 6; Memorial, para. 7), and again by the Mixed Com- mission set up under that Treaty at a meeting held on March 22, 1908 (Application, para. 8; Memorial, para. 7). The Government of Cambodia has now practically abandoned the first, third and fourth of these arguments. A glance at the table of contents of the Reply shows that under the heading "Cambodia's title" there is no section devoted to the Treaty of 1904 or the Protocol of the Treaty of 1907 or the Mixed Commission under the latter Treaty. On the other hand, more than half the Reply is devoted to an at- tempt to show that the map reproduced as Annex 1 \vas the work of the Mixed Commission under the Treaty of 1904, and therefore is binding upon the parties aç the official and final definition of the boundary in the Dangrek range described in the Treaty as following "the line of the watershed between the basins of the Nam Sen and the hfekong, on one side, and that of the Nam Moun, on the other side".

    Networking in high society The Duarte family in seventeenth-century Antwerp1 Timothy De Paepe Vleeshuis Museum | Klank van de stad & University of Antwerp At the end of the sixteenth century the Duarte family, who were of Jewish origin, moved from Portugal to Antwerp and it was here that Diego (I) Duarte laid the foundations for a particularly lucrative business in gemstones and jewellery. His son Gaspar (I) and grandson Gaspar (II) were also very successful professionally and became purveyors of fine jewellery to the courts in (among other places) England, France, the Dutch Republic and the Habsburg Empire. Their wealth enabled the Duartes to collect art and make music in their “palace” on the Meir. Their artistic taste and discernment was such that the mansion became a magnet for visitors from all over Western Europe. The arts were a catalyst for the Duartes’ business, but also constituted a universal language that permitted the family to transcend religious and geographical borders. The death of Diego (II) Duarte in 1691 brought to an end the story of the Duartes in Antwerp. The Duartes were possibly the foremost dealers in jewellery and gemstones in Antwerp in the seventeenth century, but they did not achieve that position without a great deal of effort. Thanks to hard work, determination, a love of the arts and a widespread family network, plus the advantage of Antwerp’s geographically central position, these enterprising cosmopolitans managed to overcome religious discrimination and a succession of setbacks. And in the intimacy of their home they brought together the world of business, the arts and diplomacy in an environment that welcomed every discerning visitor, irrespective of his or her religious background.

Introductory Puzzlement For centuries now, particles of matter have invariably been depicted as globules. These glob- ules, representing very different entities of distant orders of magnitudes, have in turn be used as pictorial building blocks for a host of more complex structures such as atomic nuclei, mole- cules, crystals, gases, material surfaces, electrical currents or the double helixes of DNA. May- be it is because of the unsurpassable simplicity of the spherical form that the ubiquity of this type of representation appears to us so deceitfully self-explanatory. But in truth, the spherical shape of these various units of matter deserves nothing if not raised eyebrows.
