HUYGENS ON TRANSLATION

1 ThetercentenaryofthedeathofConstantijnHuygens(15961687)presentsaconvenientoccasiontotracetheviews heldbythisversatileandmultilingualwriteronthesubjectoftranslation.AfirstinventoryofHuygens'pronouncements onthematterisallthatwillbeattemptedhere.ThechoiceofHuygensisnotdictatedbycommemorativeconsiderations alone.Boththecontemporaryappreciationofhisworkasatranslator–notablyofJohnDonne–andthefactthat,asin Vondel'scase,someofHuygens'commentsontranslationareechoedandoccasionallychallengedbyothertranslators, indicatethathisapproachtothesubjectissufficientlycentraltobetreatedasapointofreference. 2 Huygens'extraordinarygiftsasalinguistarewellknown,asisthefactthathebegantowritepoemsinattheageof 11andinFrenchat16,twoyearsbeforehetriedhishandatDutchverse.Ithasbeencalculatedthatofthemorethan 75,000linesofverseinWorp'seditionofHuygens'CollectedPoems,64.3%areinDutch,26.4%inLatinand8.7%in French,withItalian,Greek,GermanandSpanishmakinguptheremaining0.6%(VanSeggelen1987:72).Hisskillasa multilingualversifiercanbebreathtaking:inoneofhismoreplayfulpolyglotmoodshepresentshisfriendJacobvander Burghwithan"Ollapodrida"poem,dated11March1625,withlinesinDutch,Latin,Greek,Italian,French,Spanish, GermanandEnglish(Ged.II:11113). 1Hisvoluminouscorrespondence,too,containslettersinhalfadozenlanguages andshiftseffortlesslyfromonelanguageintoanother,sometimeswithinoneandthesameletter.Althoughasareader HuygenswouldseemtohavehadlessneedoftranslationsthanvirtuallyanyoneelseinseventeenthcenturyHolland,his personallibraryisknowntohaveheldavarietyoftranslations,amongthemtwoDutchversionsof(Vondel's prosetranslationof1646andWesterbaen's Aeneid of1662),'sepigramsinEnglish,andVitruvius,Catullusand TibullusinFrench(VanGemert1973:320). As an active translator Huygens displays a similar versatility across languages, not only in the number of languagesfromwhichhetranslatesLatin,French,Italian,SpanishandEnglishamongthembutalsointherangeof languagesintowhichherendersbothhisownandotherpeople'swork.If,asatranslator,heisperhapsbestremembered todayforhisDutchversionsofahandfulofJohnDonne'spoems(1630and1633)andsomefragmentsfromGuarini's Il Pastor Fido (1623), it may be worth recalling that his Collected Poems also contain such diverse and sometimes virtuosoitemsasa200pagecollectionofproverbstranslatedfromtheSpanish,abyGuarinirenderedtwice intoDutchandtwiceintoFrenchoverseveraldecades(in1624,1654,1657and1686,probablydonefrommemoryon allfouroccasions;cf.Verkuyl1961:31718),andabytranslatedintoDutch,FrenchandLatininthe spaceoffivedaysinFebruary1664(Ged.VII:3031;Angelini1974).TranslationsintolanguagesotherthanDutchare notuncommon.In1621,forinstance,hetranslatesaLatinodebyandsomeDutchstanzasbyStarterintoFrench (Ged.I:20910;Smit1980:90),andin1653herenderssomeEnglishprosepassagesbyFrancisQuarlesintoLatin versewhichJacobWesterbaenwillsubsequentlytranslateintoDutch(VanGemert1973:325;cf.Bw.V:172176). Ascouldbeexpected,giventhenatureofhistalentsandthetypeofeducationhereceived,Huygens'earliest poeticeffortsaresteepedintranslation.HisfirstFrenchpoem,in1612,isaversionofaLatinepitaph(Ged.I:41),and hisfirstDutchversescloselytranslateapassagefromDuBartas'biblicalepic La Première Sepmaine linesmodelledin turn on the Latin of Horace (Leerintveld 1987: 174). Decades later he will introduce Book XVII, 'Langdicht en Vertaelingen,'ofhis Korenbloemen (1658)withaquotationfromtheYoungerPliny,stressingtheformativevalueof translationforthestudentandaspiringwriter. 2 TheoldestDutchpoemthathedeemsworthyofinclusioninhisfirst publishedcollection, Otia (1625),isarhymingversionofPsalm114,dated20April1619(Strengholt1987:255).The LatinodewhichhewritesaboutthetheologicaldisputesinHollandin1617issoonfollowedbyhisowntranslationofit intoDutch(Ged.I:10307).Selftranslationsofthiskindwillspringupanumberoftimesduringhislongcareer.As early as 1614 he produces a French epithalamium which he then renders into Dutch (ibid.: 6068). When in 1644 VondelpublishesaDutchtranslationofoneofHuygens'Latinfunerarypoemsof1641ontheexecutionofSirThomas Wentworth,HuygenspromptlycomesupwithhisownDutchversionofittodemonstratepreciselywhatitishefinds objectionableinVondel'srathermorerhetoricalverse(Ged.III:162;IV:67;Damsteegt1987).Andaslateas1670he rendersintoDutchthelongLatinpoemhehadwrittenforAnnaMariavanSchurmanshortlybefore(Ged.VII:298300, 30407;Strengholt1987:252). 3 As far as Huygens' comments on translation are concerned, in some cases they amount to no more than polite restatementsoffamiliarpointsandpositionsintheRenaissancediscourseonthesubject(Hermans1985a). Hislaudatorypoemsonothertranslatorsessentiallyrehearsetwowellworntopoiofpraise.Thefirstofthese complimentaryverses(October1621;Ged.I:21314),onthetranslationofDuBartas' Première Sepmaine byWessel vanBoetselaer,lordofAsperen,stressesthepracticalusefulnessoftranslation,whichrendersaservicetothosewhoare unabletoreadtheforeignlanguage.ThemetaphorHuygensusesisaspatialone:wenolongerneedtogoandvisitDu Bartasonhishomeground("Looptnietsowillighmeer/BesoeckenopsynerffdenfranschenLelijHeer")forthe translator has shown us a shorter route ("een naerder padt"), and "des Werelts baeckermatt" the Garden of Eden, presumably,sincethepoemdescribesthefirstweekofCreationmaynowbeseeninAsperen.Thepoemof1637in praiseofVolkervanOosterwyck'stranslationofabookbyJosephHall(1659)makesthesamepoint:whytakethe difficultroadtothesourcetextwhenthetranslationprovidesdirectaccesstoit(Ged.VI:223). Thethreepoemscommendingtheworkofothertranslatorsinthe1660stwoforWesterbaen'sVirgil(1662) andoneforThaddeusdeLandman'stranslationofFrançoisTurretini(1666)fallinwithanotherconventionofthe laudatorygenreinmattersoftranslation,claimingequalqualititaivestatusandmeritforthetranslatorandtheoriginal author.OfWesterbaen'sfirstsixbooksofthe Aeneid itissaidthatifVirgilcouldreadthisversion,hewouldwantto translate it back into Latin, and "Wat een' Virgilius, denckt leser, had men dan!" (Ged. VI: 288). In the case of Landman'stranslationthetoposofequivalentmeritisstatedintermsofthereaderowingequalthankstothetranslator andtheforeignwriter(Ged.VII:96).Thistypeofemphaticpraise,placingauthorandtranslatoronanequalfooting,is alsousedoccasionallyinthecorrespondencebetweenHuygensandhisfriends,asinCasperBarlaeus'letterof1634 congratulatingHuygensonhisversionsofDonne,ofwhichBarlaeussaysthat"youhavetranslatedsowellthatthey seemtobeyourowncreations"("Ettantatufelicitatetranstulisti,utvideanturapudtenata,"BwI:452).Inoneinstance praiseofthiskindisvoicedoutsidethecontextofpolitecompliment,whenHuygensdeclaresinaletterof30December 1660 to Westerbaen that the English translation of "El Picaro" (i.e. Mateo Alemán's picaresque novel Guzmán de Alfarache )was"soelegant,sowellattunedtothetime,language,countryandcustoms[ofthetranslator]thatanyone readingbothofthemwouldfindithardtodecidewhichonewasthetranslator". 3 AmongtheconventionalimagesandmetaphorswhichHuygensemployselsewhereinhispronouncementson translation in prefaces, poems and letters there is one, the characterization of translationsas'shadows',whichhe elaboratesinsomedetail;itwillbediscussedseparately.Oftheotherimages,someemphasizethesecondarystatusof translations, as "dreams redreamt" ("overdroomde dromen", 1654; Ged. V: 122) or, with a clearer reference to the derivednatureofthetranslatedtext,as"borrowedjoy"("een'geleendevreughd",1650;Ged.IV:206).Most,however, focusonthenotionthat,inessence,translationisabletoconveythesubstanceoftheoriginalmessagewhilechanging onlyitsoutwardform,eventhoughasarulethenewformisregardedasinferiortothatoftheoriginal.Thisisgenerally theimportofthedescriptionofatranslatedpoemorpoetaswearinga"Nederlandschkleedsel"(1634;Bw.I:446)and as being "een oud lijf met een nieuwe huijd" (1654; Ged. V:122). The poem of 10 March 1654 on his Donne translationsrevolvesaroundaseriesofsuchimages,stressingthedifferenceinqualitybetweenthesubstancethatis beingtransmittedandthenewforminwhichthisisdonebycontrastingthevalueofthetreasured'inside'withtheworth lessnessoratleastunimportanceofthevesselcontainingit:the"merghenpit"canbereachedthrough"mijn'schraele schellen",itisnottheskinandbonesthatmatterbutthe"kostelickeziel"within,notthecasketbutthejewelsinit("En wiedanlettopdiejuweelen/Maecktweinighwercksmeervandekas"),andinconclusion:"Pastopdekeern,nietop deschellen,/Dat'salldatickteseggenhad"(Ged.V:12223).WhenafewyearslaterHuygensreferstohiseffortsto translateDonneasmerely"stammeringafter"thegreatman("soogrootenMannagestamerttehebben",Ged.VI:338), theimplicationofqualitativeinferiorityisclearenough,asitisalsointheshortpoem'Vertalingh'of1662,wherehe presentsthemorestrikingimageofatranslationasthereversesideofabeautifultapestry(Ged.VII:8)anotherimage familiartoRenaissancetranslators(Hermans1985a:11415). 4 Huygens'moreextensiveandmorepersonalobservationsonvariousaspectsoftranslationstretchfromtheearly into the 1660s. The most important texts are the following: the two versions of the 'Voormaning' preceding 'Yet overgesetts'(1623/25),thetranslationinquestionbeingthePastorFidofragmentsfromGuarini(Ged.II:28485);the poemof1633toTesselschade,accompanyingthetranslationsfromDonne(Ged.II:26768);thetwopoems'Aenden Leser'and'AenIoff. wLuchtenburgh...'of1650and1654,respectively(Ged.IV:20607andV:12223),towhichmay beaddedtheproseprefacestothetranslationsfromDonneandtheSpanishproverbsasfirstpublishedin Korenbloemen of1658(Ged.VI:33739);andfinallythevariousreferencestotranslationinthecorrespondencewithWesterbaenin the1650sand'60s(BwV:17276,34548;V:183). 5 The'Voormaning'tothefragmentsfromGuarinitranslatedin1623,whetherinitsunpublishedlongerversion(dated9 March1625)orintheshorterpublishedone,isastatementofconsiderablesignificance.Itstenormaybemorereadily grasped,however,ifweconsideritinthecontextofHuygens'practiceasatranslatoruntilthen. ThereislittledoubtthattheformaldemandswhichHuygensimposesonhistranslationsofDuBartas(1614) andGuariniareunusuallystrict,andstronglysourceoriented.AsP.E.L.Verkuylhasdemonstratedwithreferencetothe Pastor Fido passages, Huygens' version is formally virtually identical with the Italian text, down to the number of syllables per line and the rhyme scheme a translation principle Verkuyl regards as exceptional (1971: 47981). However,Huygenshadattemptedasimilartypeofwholesaletranspositionalmosttenyearsbefore,whenin1614he translatedsomefragmentsfromthe Première Sepmaine ofDuBartas.IthasrecentlybeenshownthatheretooHuygens had opted forretainingtheformalstructureoftheoriginal,evenifthisforcedhimintometricalirregularitiesinthe Dutchverses(Leerintveld1987;Streekstra1987:26).HuygensneverpublishedhisDuBartasfragments.L.Strengholt (1987:25556)hassurmisedthattheywererejectedasaresultofthemuchstricternormsconcerningmetricalregularity whichHuygensproclaimsfromabout1623onwards.Followingthe Pastor Fido experimenthemaywellhavecometo recognizetheimpossibilityofachieving,withinthelimitsof'faithful'translationashesawit,asmoothandtechnically faultlesstargettextmodelledentirelyonthesourcetext'sformalstructure.Atanyrate,inanotedated8January(or June) 1625 attached to his French translation made four years earlier of an Ode by Horace (II, 10), he criticizes translationswhichinordertopreserveaforeignmetrewouldgosofarastoviolatethenaturalstresspatternofthetarget languageadmittinginthesamebreaththatintheOdeinquestionhefellintopreciselythiserror.4Thetranslationsof Donne's poems done around 1630 certainly abandon the exclusively sourceoriented formal principle in favour of greaterlibertyintermsofnumberoflines,metricalpatternsandrhymeschemesinthetargettext(Streekstra1987:30 35). The'Voormaning'accompanyingthetranslationsfromGuarini's Pastor Fido ,then,isstilllargelyinlinewith Huygens' translational principle, at that time, of striving for a high degreeofformalsimilaritybetweenoriginaland translation.Theunpublishedversionofthe'Voormaning'beginsonabluntandparadoxicalnote:"Menkentmijvoor eenstoutwedersprekervanalleOversettingen"ablanketcondemnationwhichheevenextends,withperhapsatouchof irony,tothosetranslationsthatareofevidentpracticalvalue("Selfsvandeghenedieickbekennedatnutticheitshalven niet en behoren wedersproken te worden"). The latter point, a reference to the social function of translations as instruments in the dissemination of knowledge, is taken up again a little later when he observes that "de all begeerlickheiddesertijden"hasapparentlycreatedsuchademandfortranslationsthattheycannolongerberesisted anyway.(Incidentally:wedonotreallyknowwhoismeantby"men"in"Menkentmijvooreenstoutwederspreker...", andwhyHuygensshouldassumethattheyknowhimtobeskepticaloftranslations.) Huygens'skepticismwithregardtotranslation,however,stemsfromtheimpossibility,asheseesit,ofdoing justicebothto"dewaerheit"ofthesourcetextandto"dieeigeneaengenaemheid,oftbeter,dieaengenameeigenschapp vandenvoorseggerswoorden".Theonlywaytopreservethislatterfeatureoftheoriginal'sexpressionisbymeansof paraphrases("tenzijbijomspraken"),butsinceinHuygens'sviewtheytendtoleadthetranslatordown"treacherous byways"("bedrieghelickebywegen")andthusawayfromtheoriginal'smeaning("dewaerheit"),hegivesashisopinion thatitmayultimatelybepreferabletoputupwiththe"honestrawness"("oprechterouwicheid")ofliteraltranslation.It isthisfundamentaldilemmabetween'free'and'literal'translationwhichisstated,rathermoresuccinctlyandmemorably, intheopeningsentenceofthepublishedversionofthe'Voormaning': Neemtmenderuymtein'tOversetten,sookandewaerheidnietvrijvangeweldgaen:Staetmenscherpopde woorden,sooverdwijntdegeestvandeuytspraeck.(Ged.I:28485) Whenthe'Voormaning'wasreprintedin Korenbloemen in1658,itwasfollowedbyaLatinquotationfromStJerome's prefacetohistranslationoftheChroniclesofEusebius,aprefacefromwhichJeromehimselfsubsequentlyquotedinhis famous Letter to Pammachius ('De optimo genere interpretandi'). The lastsentenceofthequotationfromJeromeas giveninKorenbloemenisverysimilartotheopeningofthe'Voormaning': Si ad verbum interpretor, absurde resonat, si ob necessitatem aliquid in ordine&insermonemutavero,ab interpretisvideborofficiorecessisse.[IfItranslatewordforword,theresultsoundsabsurd;ifofnecessityI changeanythingintheorderofwordsandthemannerofexpression,Iwillseemtohaverenouncedthedutyof atranslator](Huygensed.1892:208) WhetherHuygensalreadyknewofJerome'scommentsontranslationin1623,remainsunclear. Bothversionsofthe'Voormaning'thengoontoadvocatearhymelessrenderingofthe Pastor Fido passages astheleastunsatisfactorysolutiontothetranslator'sproblem.Theunpublishedtextmentionsexplicitlythatthismethod oftranslatingpoetryisnew("desetevorenongebruycktemanierevandoen")andjustifiestheexperimentwithreference totwoundesirablealternatives:theexistingFrenchproseversionoftheplayisdescribedasabsurd,5andtherecenttrans lationinrhymingverse,byanotherFrenchman,as"mediocre"and"untrue"totheoriginal,i.e.strayingtoofarfromthe originalwords.However,therhymelessverseoftheItalians("HetRijmeloosongebondendichtvandeItalianen"),as Guarinioftenusesitinthe Pastor Fido ,hassuggestedthepossibilityofamoreacceptablemiddlecourse,aformof poetictranslationwhich,asthepublishedversionofthe'Voormaning'hasit,"denminstenafbreuckvanaerdendevan waerheid lijden [sou]", or, in the unpublished text, "in 'tvertalen van Gedichten soo de geesticheid vande uytsprake naertracht,datsijsichminstvandewaerheidafgeeft".Itisthenthehopeofbeingabletosteersuchamiddlecourse betweentoomuchungainlyliteralismandtoomuchunwarrantedinventionwhich,hesays,hasfinallyovercomehis "bitsenvooroordeel"againsttranslation.Huygenssealstheargumentwiththeobservationthatifthesourcetextpermits itselfacertainfreedominitsverseform,thetranslationmayavailitselfofthesameliberty("...dewijlsichdiestercke Pennendieruymtegeven,watredendwingtonstotscherperendwang?"). 6 Itmaywellberashtoassume,onthebasisoftheforegoing,thatHuygensisrecommendingtheuseofunrhymedverse asavehicleforthetranslationofpoetryingeneral.Eventhoughbothversionsofthe'Voormaning'speakoftranslation, viz.poetictranslation,ingeneralterms("ingevallvanvertalinge","ingevallevanOversettingen","in'tvertalenvan Gedichten"),Huygens'practiceisdifferent,andatleasttheunpublishedtextofthe'Voormaning'seemstotakeback withonehandwhatithasjustgivenwiththeother,creatingtheimpressionthatinfactHuygensisthinkingprimarilyof unrhymedDutchverseasthetranslationalequivalentofunrhymedItalianverse.InthosepartsofthePastor Fido ,he observes, whereGuarinididuserhyme,whetherbydesignoraccident("daerickmercktedenAuteursulxofternst geweest te hebben oft onverhoedts ontvallen te zijn"), the Dutch rendering has followed its model in every respect ("hebbeickmij...aenalledeselvematenenwee'rslagenverplicht").GiventhetenorofHuygens'argumentationsofar, itisonlynaturalthatheshouldsoundmoreapologeticaboutthedegreeof'faithfulness'hemanagedtoattaininthese rhymingpassages,withtheiradditionalformalconstraints,eventhoughhestressesthatheworkedashardonthemas Guarinimusthavedoneontheoriginals("...diehijmetsooveelmoeytensnietontworpenenheeft,oftsijenhebbens bijnaerwelsooveelin'tnaerbootsengekost,daerickgaernbekennedewaerheitsomtijdsvrijwatkrachtsgeledente hebben,emmersvrijwatvercierings,so'tgeenverkleininghheetenmoet"). ForourunderstandingofHuygens'positionregardingpoetictranslation,therefore,itisimportanttorecognize thathisadvocacyofrhymelessverseasasuitablevehicleisdefinitelyproblematical.Theunpublishedtextofthe'Voor maning'isoddlyinconsistentinthisrespect,nowheremoresothatwhenHuygenssays,withreferencetotherhymed passagesinthe Pastor Fido ,thathehasretainednotonlythoserhymeswhichwereintentionallyplacedandthus,one imagines,functionalbutalsothosethat,asheputsit,appearpurelyaccidental("denAuteur...onverhoedtsontvallen"). Moreover,insofarasbothversionsofthe'Voormaning'recommendtheuseofrhymelessverseforthetranslationof poetrygenerally,Huygens'practiceconformswiththisprincipleonlyinthosepassagesswhichalreadywerewithout rhymeintheoriginal.Inotherwords,althoughHuygens'proposaltoemployunrhymedverseforpoetictranslationis undoubtedlynewwhenwecompareitwiththeconventionalrelianceonlocallyacceptedorcanonizedverseformsbeit theaccentuatedverseofthe16thcenturyRhetoriciansorthedecasyllablesandalexandrinesofthemoremodernpoets hisowndemonstrationofthenewmethodispartialatbest.Itmightevenbearguedthat,inspiteofwhatHuygensis preaching in theory, what he is advocatingthroughhispracticeisnotamiddlecoursebetweencrudeliteralismand impermissible embellishment but a strongly sourceoriented principle that would translate rhyme with rhyme and absenceofrhymewithabsenceofrhyme.InthatsensealsohisPastorFidotranslationsareperfectlyinharmonywiththe strictformalmethodadoptedtenyearsearlierforthefragmentsfromDuBartas.Inanycase,ifitreallywasHuygens' intentioninthe'Voormaning'topresentanovelapproachtothetranslationofpoetry,theexperimentwasshortlived. Tomyknowledge,hemadenoattempt,eitherinthoseyearsorlater,totranslaterhymingverseintounrhymedlines. 7 Whateverthecasemaybe,Huygens''Voormaning'asfirstpublishedin Otia in1625didnotgounnoticed,noteven unchallenged. When Hendrik Bruno published his translation of Virgil's Eclogues in 1658, he quoted the uncompromising opening sentence of the 'Voormaning' in his preface ('Aen den bescheydenen Leser', dated 1653), togetherwithanextractfromVondel'sprefacetothe1646prosetranslationofVirgil'scompletework(Bruno1658:4); bothstatementswereobviouslyintendedtounderlinethedifficultyoftranslation,andofpoetictranslationinparticular. 6 WhenayearlaterBrunopublishedassortedtranslationsfromandHorace,heinsertedfourpoemsatthebackof thelittle34pagebook,thelastoneofwhichisasonnetstating,inessence,thatheisproudtofollowHuygens'example assetoutinthe'Voormaning'morethanthirtyyearsbefore;butalthoughBrunoreferstoHuygens'useofunrhymed verseinthe Pastor Fido renditions,hisownbilingualtexthasDutchalexandrinesfacingtheLatinlines. 7 Byfarthemostinterestingresponsetothe'Voormaning',however,appearedin1655,inJacobWesterbaen's extensivepreface('Voorreden')tohistranslationsofthePsalms.Westerbaenherediscussesandcriticizesasizeable numberofDutchPsalmtranslations,includingtwosuccessiveversionsbyJohandeBrune.Thefirstofthese,from1644, is a wordforword rendering, in verse but unrhymed and lacking any discernible rhythm or metre, according to Westerbaen(1655:n.p.).DeBrune'sreworkingofthetranslationin1650ismetricalbutstillwithoutrhyme.Nowthis manneroftranslating,Westerbaencontinues,iswhatHuygensadvocatedinhis'Voormaning',fromwhichindeedhe quotes.Westerbaenthendeclaresthathetooonceputtherhymelessmethodtothetestinatranslationofasubstantial partofthePastorFido,andalthoughhefounditrelativelyeasytodo, 8hewasunhappywiththeresultbecause,hesays, arenderingthatclingstotheoriginal'swordstendstosacrifice"dengeestvandenuytspraeck,endewatisdocheen gedicht daer geen geest in is?" ( ibid .). As Westerbaen elaborates his point, he advances several more arguments to counterHuygenscaseforrhymelessverse.Acertainliberty,heclaims,ispossibleintranslationwithoutviolatingthe originalmeaning;rhymeisanintegralpartofDutchpoetryandcontributestoitspleasingeffect;andsincewordfor wordtranspositionsgoagainstthegrainofthelanguageanditsidiomaticstructure,thetranslator'staskistograspthe original'ssenseandexpressitinthetargetlanguageinthemostnaturalandappropriateway. 9 It is evident that Westerbaen does not regard Huygens' 'Voor maning' as an apologia for a viable middle coursebetweenliteralismandlibertyintranslation,butasanattempttoreconcileliteralismwithapoeticformofsorts. Theapproachhefavoursismarkedlymorefreeandmoretargetorientedinitswishtogivedueconsiderationtothe natureofthereceptorlanguageandinitsdesiretomakethetranslatedtextconformtothepoeticconventionsofthe targetliterature. 8 The'Voormaning',bothinitsunpublishedandinitspublishedversion,endswithanimagethatleavesnodoubtasto Huygens'viewofthenatureoftranslation: Want,sonderonstevleyen,zijndevertalingenvanfraeyeSchriftenveelmeeralsschaduwenvanschoone lichamen?endezijndienietmenighmaeldeongelijckste,deslimste,demismaeckste?(Ged.I:285) The image itself goes back a long way. It already occurs in Quintilian's discussion of imitation in the Institutio Oratoria ,10 and becomes a stock metaphor among Renaissance translators to suggest both the derivative and the qualitativelyinferiorstatusofthetranslatedworkvisa`visitsoriginal.TheimagemusthaveappealedtoHuygens,for in subsequent years he returns to it several times. In a letter dated 17 August 1630 he offers two of his Donne translations to Hooft, "slaende dese dichter [i.e. Donne] ganschelick op U.E. manieren van invall ende uytspraeck," adding that these verse renderings are like "schaduwen van schoone lichamen, bij dat ergher is belemmerden sonneschijn"(Bw.I:289)thelatterareferencetohismanyprofessionalduties.Butitisinthefirstpartofthepoemof 1633 'Aen Ioff. w Tesselschade Crombalch met mijne vertalingen uyt het Engelsche dichten van D r. Donne' that he elaboratestheimageintoanelegantandcarefullybalancedcharacterizationoftherelationbetweenthetranslatedand theoriginalpoem.TodayitisperhapsHuygens'bestknownstatementontranslation.Therelevantstanzasareworth quoting: 'Tvertaeldescheeltsooveelvan'tonvertaeldedicht, Alslijfenschaduwen:enschaduwenzijnnachten. Enschaduwenzijn,niet;dat'sdroomenbijdendagh: Soodesedichtenoock:maer'tzijngelijfdeNietten: Enslaetghij'tvoetselgaedaeruijtmijn'droomenschieten, 'Khaddpittenmerghgeslockteericksedroomd'ensagh.(Ged.II:26768) Eachstanzabeginsbyadmittingtheinferiorqualityofthetranslatedwork,buteachtimethechargeiscounteredbya modestrevaluation.Translations,asshadows,arelikethenight,yettheyowetheirexistencetolight;theydistorttheir model,butstillretainsomethingofit;theyareobscureandhardtopenetrate,yetagoodreadercanseethroughthem; they appear to lack warmth, but their warmth is within; they are nothings, daydreams, yet they derive from reality. InsofarasHuygensdoessoundapositivenoteabouttranslation,itisacautiousone,andinaminorkey.Theimplication isalwaysthatwhatevermeritthetranslatedtextmaypossessisduetotheoriginal,whichremainsvisiblethroughthe translation.Asatranslatorcriticalofhisownpracticeandskepticaloftheverypossibilityoftranslatinganythingade quately,Huygensappearstohavebeenpleasedwithhisfinelytunedjudgement.Hisletterof19August1642toJ.A. Banniusspeaksofthepoemof1633as(inWorp'sparaphrase)"eenkleinevoorrede...waaroverik,owonder,nognooit berouwhebgehad"(Bw.III:335). Theimageoftranslationsasshadowsoccursyetagaininthepoem'AendenLeser',dated18January1650,and usedtoprefacetheepigrams'UytEngelschOnDicht'inKorenbloemen(Ged.IV:20607).Theechoesfromthepoem forTesselschadeareunmistakeable:thetranslationsheispresentingare"aborrowedjoy"("een'geleendevreughd"),but theyareborrowedfromnoblespirits("dit'seenleenvanedel'menschengeesten");andevenifhisversionsare"darker" thantheirmodels,"nochismijdanckteweten/Datickmijn'schaduwenhaer'luysterhebbgeleent."Thelineswhich follow, however, highlight another practical consideration in favour of translation. A 'dark' rendering may obscure ("decken")theoriginal,butforthosewhoaredazzledbybrightsunlightthisshadeisbeneficial: Of,duncktu'tHollandschswarthetEngelschwitttedecken, Nochkomtu'tswarttebaet.'Khebblamperdoecksientrecken Voorooghendie'tgeweldvansomersonneschijn Nietuijtenkondenstaen. This image constitutes a somewhat paradoxical variant of those vindications of translation which speak in terms of openingdoors,providingaccess,makingavailablewhatwashiddenorlockedawayinforeigntongues,butHuygens makes his point by means of a cleverly inverted metaphor. A few lines further on, the pun on "verlichten" as both 'alleviate'and'illuminate'fullyrevealsthebeneficalaspectofthese'dark'translations: ...verdonck'renisverlichten, Daer'tooghbijwerdtverlicht,enmetgemackdoorsiet. Afterthepoem'AendenLeser'of1650Huygenswritesanothertwopoemsapartfromlaudatoryversesonthesubject oftranslation('AenIoff. wLuchtenburgh...',10March1654,Ged.VI:12223;andtheshort'Vertalingh',4January1662, Ged.VII:8),butastheyplayupontheconventionalmetaphorsmentionedinsection3above(thecontainerandits valuablecontents,thereversesideofatapestry),theyneednotbediscussedagain. 9 In the course of the 1650s, several new elements can be seen to enter intoHuygens'conceptionoftranslation.One notion,whichbearsonhisviewsontranslationintoDutchinparticular,firstsurfacesmuchearlier,inhisautobiography, writteninLatinbetween1629and1631.HereHuygensclaimsthatforallgeneralpurposes,andinspiteofidiomatic differences,alllanguagesareinprincipleequallyresourceful. 11 Specificnewconceptsandobjects,though,maycallfor anappropriatetermtobeimportedfromanotherlanguage,andbywayofillustrationhereferstoSeneca'srelianceon GreekforcertainphilosophicaltermsthatneededtobecoinedinLatin.TheDutchlanguage,hegoeson,nowfacesthe sameproblem,eventhoughingeneralthereisnoreasontocomplainaboutitslimitations,especiallysinceDutchis comparabletoGreekinitsrichcapacitytoformcompoundwords(Huygensed.1946:4445). Some of these points come up again in the 1650s, with Huygens' translations from Donne providing the immediatecontext.InaLatinlettertoHuygens,dated14December1653,WesterbaenrecallsalittleanecdoteHuygens musthavetoldhimatonetimeoranotherabout"acertainEnglishpoet"whoKingJameshadapparentlyclaimedwas untranslatable;Westerbaenwantstoknowthatpoet'sname. 12Thereference,ofcourse,istoJohnDonne.Thisbecomes evidentfromtheshortprosepreface'TotdenLeser'which,togetherwiththetwopoemsof1633and1654,precedesthe DonnetranslationsinBookXVIIof Korenbloemen .HereHuygensrepeatsthestoryheoncetoldWesterbaen(though attributingittoCharlesIratherthanJamesI),addingthat,hadtheKingknown"therichpropertiesofourTongue,"he would not have been so rash about Donne's untranslatability, for Dutch can express virtually anything "easily and gracefully". 13 Yet English, he admits, presents particular difficulties for the translatorintoDutch,becausetheDutch languageresiststheintrusionofforeignloanwords,whereasEnglishadoptsthemwithoutanyproblem: ...wanthaerTaele[i.e.English]isalleTaelen,enals'thaerbelieft,GrieckschenLatijnzijnplatEngelsch. Waertegendewijlwynietuytheemschonderonsengedoogen,staettedencken,hoewyonsbesetvinden, wanneer wy in suyver Duyts hebben uyt te spreken Ecstasis, Atomi, Influentiae, Legatum, Alloy, ende diergelijcke.(Ged.VI:338) Huygensregretstheeffectofthisformofpurism,whichheregardsasrestrictive("Houdtonsvryvansulckebenaut heden, die rest en kost ons geen handverdray"), but as it has become a general linguistic norm, he feels obliged to respectitallthesame("Maermetsulckebenauthedenhebickhiermoetenworstelen;daeropdeLeserachtwill'slaen"). Theterm"benautheden"suggeststhatheisviewingtheDutchlanguageofhisowndayasaparallelcasetoClassical Latin,ashedidintheautobiography.ThecorrespondingLatinword'angustiae'alsocropsupinaletterof24March 1653toWesterbaen,wherehespeaksofhisLatintranslationsfromtheEnglishofFrancisQuarles,sayingthathehas selectedfortranslation"onlythosepassageswhoseimpactcouldnotpossiblybestifledbythelimitations["angustijs"] ofLatinwhichwereacauseforcomplainteveninRome." 14 ApartfomprovidinguswithanimpressionofhisviewofEnglishandDutchandtheirdifferingdegreesof receptivitytoloanwords,Huygens'willingnesstoacceptthepuristconstraintsthengoverningDutchusageinliteratureis alsoofinterestasevidenceoftheconsiderablerelaxationofhisearlier,stronglysourceorientedapproachtotranslation. This more liberal attitude had first manifested itself in the translations from Donne (1630 and 1633), but the accompanyingdiscourseontranslationdoesnotappeartocatchupwiththeshiftofemphasisuntilanumberofyears later.Inthecourseofthe1650sand'60s,however,wecanpointtoseveralinstances. 10 In his letter of 24 March 1653 to Westerbaen, in which he mentions his Latin verse renderings of Francis Quarles' Englishprose(cf.above,Note14),Huygensobservesthat,althoughtherearemanypassagesintheEnglishtextwhich hedidnotattempt,hehas"leftoutfewofthebetterones,whosewitorcharmcanbesatisfactorilyconveyedinLatin words"("Fateormultasuperesse,quaenonattigi;asserotamenpaucademelioribusomissa,quorumautacumenaut gratiasatisLatinisverbisexplicariposset";Bw.V:172). Thesamedoublecriterionforselectionpickingonlythoseitemswhichhethinksaregoodinthemselvesand willtranslatewellisalsoinvokedintheproseprefacetothetranslationsofSpanishproverbs('SpaenscheWysheit, VertaeldeSpreeckwoorden')whichmakeupBookXVIIIof Korenbloemen : Een' goede handvol Spaensche Spreeckwoorden heb ick uyt grooter hoop gelesen; naerse my in haer' Tael bevielen,endeindemijnebevallijckschenenuytgesprokentekonnenwerden.Daereenvanbeidegebrack, saghickgeenvoordeeltedoen.(Ged.VI:339) Astheseareproverbsandthusintendedforcommonuse,hehasdecidedtoputthemtorhyme,usingfullrhymewhere theSpanishhadonlyassonance("sekerenwildenbyklanck");metreisthrowninasanextramnemonicdevice:"Emmers slotvangeluytishetooraengenaem,endeMaetdaerbydeMemorienietondienstigh"( ibid .).Iftheimpositionof metreandespeciallyrhymeontheDutchtextsseemstoruncountertothemethodproposedforpoetictranslationinthe 'Voormaning'of1623/25,thereasonisobviouslythatproverbsconstituteaverydifferentgenre,andHuygensmakesit clearthatheisusingrhymetohelpthesayingshehasselectedgainpopularacceptance:"Omvoortstheuytgesiftesoo veelgangbaerertemaecken,endeaendenmantehelpen,hebickseinRijmgekleedt;gelijckmenPillenverguldt,en bittere schellen in suycker backt" ( ibid .). In other words, text type and intended function are relevant factors in determiningthemethodoftranslationandtheshapeofthetargettext.Nevertheless,anechofromthe'Voormaning'and itscentralconcernfor"dewaerheit"canstillbeheardinHuygens'admissionthattheadoptionofmetreandrhymehas resulted, inevitably,incertainlibertiesregardingsourcetextcontent:"Staendedansoonauwopdewaerheitalsmy doenlickisgeweest,hebickernochtanswataenmoetenklampen,daerickaltekortewoordengevondenhebbe,endedie ongepaertendeongerijmt"( ibid .). 11 Finally,itisinsomeletterstoWesterbaenin1660and1666thatHuygenssumsup,andneatlydelimits,hisviewson translationinthisperiod.Theletterof30December1660inwhichhepraisestheEnglishtranslationoftheSpanish picaresquenovel Guzmán de Alfarache (cf.above,Section3andNote3),containsadvicetoWesterbaenconcerningthe latter'srenderingintoDutchofthecomediesofTerence(Bw.V:34547).HavingurgedWesterbaentotranslatewitha freerreinifhewantstodojusticetothedramaticqualitiesoftheLatinplays, 15 heinvokestheEnglishtranslationof Guzmán de Alfarache ,stressingitsstylisticelegance("tamconcinne")andthewaythetranslatorhasadaptedthenovel toitsnewenvironment("tamadaevum,linguam,patriametmoressuos").Hecontinues: IftheEnglishmanhadsetouttotranslatewordforword["καταπόδα"],itisobviousthatallthosesparksof nativecharmwouldhavecollapsedintoaheapofashes.Ofcourse,thatwriterwastranslatingproseintoprose, butIdonotseewhyitcouldnotbedoneequallywellinverse,especiallyifsomeoneasgoodasyouwould undertakethetask.AndIhavenodoubtthatifyouweretoattemptitinalightheartedmanner,theresult wouldpleaselearnedandunlearnedpeoplealike,andyourselfaswell. 16 GiventheearliercriticismofHuygens''Voormaning'intheprefacetohisPsalmtranslationsof1655andhisstatement, inthesamepreface,ofhowinhisopinionagoodtranslatoroughttoproceed(cfabove,Section7andNote9),itis hardlysurprisingthatWesterbaen'sreply,inaletterdated2January1661,shouldcontainanemphaticdenialthathehad beentranslatingtooliterally,followedbyanexplicitrestatementofhisviewthattheidiomaticandfigurativequalitiesof theoriginaltextshouldbereplacedwithwordsandexpressionshavingequivalentforceinthereceptorlanguage. 17 Intheend,thequestionofwhethertotranslateascloselytotheoriginalwordsaspossibleortoattemptto recreatetheirstylisticcharmandforcebyconcentratingontheresourcesofthetargetlanguage,remainsunresolved. When, in a postscript to another Latin letter to Westerbaen, 12 March 1666, Huygens speaks of a "little poem" ("poematium")byPetrarchwhichhelikedsomuchthathetranslateditintoseverallanguages,hegivesbothtranslation principlestheirdueandaddsanintriguingfinalobservation: ItranslatedthisfromtheItalianwordforword[“καταπόδα”],asIusuallydo,asfarasthiscanbedonewhile retainingtheeleganceoftheoriginalexpression.ForIwouldnotwanttobebroughtdownwiththecharge whichafriendjokinglydirectedatd'Ablancourt,thecelebratedFrenchtranslatorofTacitusandotherancient writers,tothiseffect:yourversion,mylord,hesaid,isverymuchlikethewomanIlove:verybeautiful,for sure,butunfaithful. 18 Onceagain,asintheLatintextsofthetwopreviousquotations,theGreekterm"καταπόδα,""ontheheels[ofthe sourcetext],"i.e.wordforword,iscontrastedwiththeconcernforthe"charm"and"elegance"oftheoriginal("aut acumen,autgratia,"1653;"illaselegantiaenativaeflammulas,"1660;"salvâdictioniselegantiâ",1666).Butwhereasin theletterof30December1660Huygensimpliesthatliteralismandeleganceintranslationcannotbereconciledandthat atranslationwillonlybesuccessfulifittakescertainliberties,intheletterjustquotedheoptsoncemoreforastricter approach,yetleavingsufficientleewaytoendup,ideally,withthebestofbothworlds. Itishardtoassesswhetherthisrenewedsuspicionofthefreertypeoftranslationisapurelypersonalmatteror hasafurtherpolemicaledgetoit.Thelatterpossibilityarisesbecausethereferenceintheletter'sconcludingsentenceis to Nicolas Perrot d'Ablancourt, the chief exponent and spokesman of the new school of 'free' translators in France, whosehighlypolishedversionsoftheClassicshadbecomethedominantmodeoftranslationintoFrenchtowardsthe middleoftheseventeenththcentury.D'AblancourthimselfspentnearlyayearinLeydenin163435,andmayhavemet Huygens there. 19 In his letters to Conrart in later years Huygens occasionally inquires about him, but it remains impossibletodeterminehowwellinformedhewasaboutd'Ablancourt'sattitudetotranslationandtheimpactofhis work,orindeedwhetherHuygens'ownemphasisontheneedtosafeguardthe'elegance'and'charm'ofaliterarytextin translationinthelettersof1653and1660owesanythingatalltotheFrenchman'soutspokenandinfluentialviewsonthe subject.InFrance,the'free'translatorshadtheircritics,too,amongthemPierreDanielHuet( De interpretatione ,1661) andGillesMénage.Thewellknownterm'bellesinfidèles'todesignatethetranslationsbyd'Ablancourtandhisfollowers was coined as a witty critical remark by Ménage, probably around 1654, to the effect that d'Ablancourt's versions remindedhimofawomanheonceloved"etquiétaitbellemaisinfidèle"(Horguelin1981:76;Zuber1968:202).Itis thisanecdoteHuygensisreferringtoinhisletterof12March1666.Hiswords"Pulcherrimanimirum,sedinfida"("very beautiful,forsure,butunfaithful")alsohappentobethefirstoccurrenceoftheterm'bellesinfidèles'outsideFrance (Zuber1968:203). Huygens,ofcourse,retellstheanecdotetomakeitclearthatheisnotpreparedtoadoptforhimselfthe'belle infide`le' approach to poetictranslation.Lookingbackathisvariouspronouncementsonthematteroftranslationin general,therefusalisnotsurprising.Whatremainslesscleariswhetherheismerelycitingacasualremarkbywayof illustrationorconsciouslydefininghisownpositionwithrespecttotheinfluentialFrenchschool.Thatquestion,though, canonlybefullyansweredwhenweknowmoreabout17thcenturyconceptionsoftranslationintheLowCountriesand theextenttowhichdevelopmentsabroad,suchastheriseofthe'bellesinfidèles'inFrance,affectedtheDutchtranslators oftheperiod.Itmayseemamerepointofdetail,butitisnot.IfwerememberthatevenduringHuygens'lifetimethe menofNilVolentibusArduumbegantoimposetheideasofFrenchClassicismonthetheatreandthatthe 'belleinfidèle'modelwastodominatethehistoryofliterarytranslationinFranceandelsewhereforwelloverahundred years,thewiderissuesraisedbyHuygens'referencetothefamouswitticismareworthexploring.
