Meisho Zue and the Mapping of Prosperity in Late Tokugawa Japan Robert Goree, Wellesley College Abstract The cartographic history of Japan is remarkable for the sophistication, variety, and ingenuity of its maps. It is also remarkable for its many modes of spatial representation, which might not immediately seem cartographic but could very well be thought of as such. To understand the alterity of these cartographic modes and write Japanese map history for what it is, rather than what it is not, scholars need to be equipped with capacious definitions of maps not limited by modern Eurocentric expectations. This article explores such classificatory flexibility through an analysis of the mapping function of meisho zue, popular multivolume geographic encyclopedias published in Japan during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The article’s central contention is that the illustrations in meisho zue function as pictorial maps, both as individual compositions and in the aggregate. The main example offered is Miyako meisho zue (1780), which is shown to function like a map on account of its instrumental pictorial representation of landscape, virtual wayfinding capacity, spatial layout as a book, and biased selection of sites that contribute to a vision of prosperity. This last claim about site selection exposes the depiction of meisho as a means by which the editors of meisho zue recorded a version of cultural geography that normalized this vision of prosperity. Keyhole-shaped tombs were considered symbols of early Japanese hegemony during the Kofun period (ca. 250 CE – 538 CE) and, until then, had only been known on the Japanese archipelago. This announcement revived long-standing debates on the nature of early “Korean- Japanese” relations, including the theory that an early “Japan” had colonized the southern Korean peninsula in ancient times. Nationalist Japanese scholars viewed these tombs as support for that theory, which Korean scholars vehemently rejected. Approaches to understand the eclectic nature of the keyhole-shaped tombs in the Yŏngsan River basin starkly revealed larger issues in the studies of early “Korean-Japanese” relations: 1) geonationalist frameworks, 2) hegemonic texts, and 3) core-periphery models of interaction. ii This dissertation critiques these issues and evaluates the various claims made on the origins of the keyhole-shaped tombs in the Yŏngsan River basin, the racial identity of the entombed, and their geopolitical circumstances. -

one Shinano in the Nation the corpus of national maps (identified in Japanese as Nihon sOzu or Nihon zenzu) published before the Meiji era is large and varied. Within that corpus, it is possible to discern three fundamentally diªerent paradigms: a view from the west, a view from the east, and a view from the road. The oldest cartographic model was centered on Yamashiro Province, the region of the imperial capital.1 To a court residing near the shores of the Inland Sea, Shinsh[ was a strategic gateway to the eastern marches, a military fron- tier that was not fully subdued until the eleventh century.2 This chapter begins by recounting the court’s relationship with the province during its heyday. That relationship would fray badly during the succeeding centuries, which ended in a decisive shift of power to the east. Yet the Kyoto-centric paradigm proved resilient, resurging in various cartographic forms through- out the Tokugawa period. As a result, a geography of Shinano that had de- veloped in classical times remained in public view well into the nineteenth century. Long before that, however, a second conception of Japanese national space began to be articulated, one in which all roads led not to Kyoto but to Edo, the shogun’s headquarters at the edge of the KantO Plain. On maps com- piled by the Tokugawa shogunate, the military capital in the east over- shadowed the imperial complex in the west, emerging as the chief node of an expanded and reconfigured national network. This had important im- 3 1 plications for how Shinano was mapped. -

Development and Dispersal Process of Ancient Japanese Clan Development and Dispersal Process of Ancient Japanese Clan Masanobu SUZUKI Abstract In ancient Japan, how did the Yamato Kingdom (大和政権) form? In order to research this question, I studied the Ōmiwa clan (大神氏). This clan served the Yamato Kingdom and took charge of religious services in ancient times. The clan was one of the most powerful ancient Japanese clans. Therefore, knowledge of how the imperial family and the Ōmiwa clan are related is indispensable for understanding the nature of the politics of the Yamato Kingdom. Furthermore, it is indispensable for understanding the process of forming the Japanese nation in ancient times. In this paper, I extracted place names, Shinto shrine names, and clan names related to the “Miwa” (神, 三輪) or “Ōmiwa” (大神, 大三輪) from ancient historical documents. I found that they were distributed throughout almost all of the islands in ancient Japan, and some of the clans overlapped geographically. If we now find a related place name or Shinto shrine name, it is likely that related people who the Ōmiwa clan controlled lived there in ancient times. The Yamato Kingdom sent troops to or advanced into western and eastern Japan or foreign countries, so ancient people learned about the Ōmiwa god (大三輪神). They then established shrines for worship- ing that god as a war god, and the Miwa clan (神氏), the Miwahito clan (神人氏), the Miwahitobe clan (神人部 氏), and the Miwabe clan (神部氏) were established in various places in Japan to worship the god according to the local ruling systems of the Yamato Kingdom, including the Hito system (人制), the Bemin system (部民制), and the Kokuzō system (国造制). -

Through a series of case studies, I examine the works of art and architecture created by or for three sisters of the Asai 浅井 family: Yodo- dono 淀殿 (1569-1615), Jōkō-in 常高院 (1570-1633), and Sūgen-in 崇源院 (1573-1626). The Asai sisters held an elite status in their lifetimes, in part due to their relationship with the “Three Unifiers” of early 17th century Japan—Oda Nobunaga (1534-1582), Toyotomi Hideyoshi (1537- 1589), and Tokugawa Ieyasu (1543-1616). As such, they were uniquely positioned to participate in the cultural battle for control of Japan. In each of my three case studies, I look at a specific site or object associated with one of the sisters. -

The World of the Shôen Estate and Government Lands
THE WORLD OF THE SHÔEN ESTATE AND GOVERNMENT LANDS The Shôen Estate/Government Lands System The medieval land system—known as the shôen estate/government lands system—came into being from the latter half of the eleventh century to the first half of the thirteenth century. Government lands were divided into administrative units of districts (gun), hamlets (gô), neighborhoods (hô) and fields (myô), while shôen estates were simply described as shô (estates). Shôen estates and government lands were, in fact, basically subcontracting units for the collection of taxes—yearly tribute and public fees—the district, hamlet, neighborhood and field units submitted their taxes to the provincial governor through the provincial office (kokuga). Shôen paid their taxes directly to the imperial family, the Fujiwara Regents or to large temples and shrines—in other words, to their proprietors. Each of these administrative units had an officer (tsukasa) assigned to govern them who contracted to gather taxes from a fixed amount of agricultural land in the unit and sent them on to the provincial governor or the proprietor of the shôen estate. This, simply put, was the shôen estate/government lands system. The establishment and distribution of districts, hamlets, neighborhoods, fields and shô administrative units were particular to each province. Differences existed between eastern and western Japan, and also between Kyûshû and all other areas. In the east and in Kyûshû, the units tended to be larger; in some cases, districts became shôen estates themselves. Meanwhile, in the Kinai region, shôen could be composed of widely scattered paddy fields. Despite such variations, 111 however, the shôen/government land system covered all of the three main islands of Honshû, Shikoku and Kyûshû. -
