He was appointed to his present position as Kuwait Professor of Gulf and Arabian Peninsula Affairs in 2006. Prior to coming to the Elliott School, Amb. Gnehm had a distinguished 36-year career in the United States Foreign Service, including serving as the U.S. Ambassador to the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan (2001–2004), U.S. Ambassador to Australia (2000–2001), U.S. Ambassador to Kuwait (1991–1994), and director general of the U.S. Foreign Service (1997–2000). He was a member of the Senior Foreign Service and held the rank of Career Michael E. Brown Minister.

Gnehm has been awarded two U.S. Secretary of Defense Medals for Meritorious Civilian Elliott School of International Affairs Service: one for his service in the Office of the Secretary of Defense and a second for his support to U.S. forces during and after Desert Storm.
