life what is its place in latter day saint theology and philosophy in what directions can it most effectively contribute to the en- richmentrichment of our daily lives or more significantly what part should music play in helping the individual on his eternal journey toward perfection if these questions could be con- clusivelyclusively answered we would be in possession of a definitive guiding principle a measuring rod by which we could evaluate all phases of musical activity whether they pertain to public worship to the home to the school to recreational programs and amusements or to the reflective and creative thoughts of the mind As music educators in the church school system some of us are vitally concerned with the problem of orient- ing our efforts as finely as possible in the direction in which lies the fullest value for us all however latter day saint theology and philosophy as far as it has been defdegdefinedined touch only indirectly upon this sub- ject direct pronouncements by the prophets have been few we are enjoined to seek after those things which are vir- tuous lovely or of good report or praiseworthy 1 in the doctrine and covenants we read my soul delightethdelighteth in the song of the heart yea the song of the righteous is a prayer unto me and it shall be answered with a blessing upon their heads 2 if thou are merry praise the lord with belongs to heaven sweet harmonious sounds give exquisite joy to human beings capable of appreciating music I1 delight in hearing harmonious tones made by the human voice by musical instruments and by both combined 4 lacking more specific enlightenment from the scriptures or from the published words of church leaders we are forced to assume that a comprehensive blueprint of the role of music in the eternal plan of salvation so far as it pertains to the present earthly existence is ours to work out on a more or less pragmatic basis to assist us in this task we must make use of the total resources of the history of mankind s experience with this art not neglecting the history of musical practice in the mormon church itself this practice includes three phases sacred music as used in worship social and recreational music and music education as carried on in the schools of the church the first phase has been treated in studies of latter day saint hymnody by will- iam wilkes 5 by newell weight 6 and by D sterling wheel- wright 7 it is the purpose of this paper to describe briefly some aspects of the other two phases recreational music and music education recreational music of theearlythe early history of the church will be considered first however the principal em- phasis will be upon musical practices related to a neglected area of mormon educational history the period of liberty of the saints in many respects to remove the somber hues supposed to be essential to a religious life and more especially in the manner of innocent amusements in things not harmful or sinful in themselves but only in their abuse the ban was by him largely removed leading to a wider social life and greater freedom of enjoyment until the violin is not regarded by the saints as an instru- ment of satan nor the ball room when properly safeguarded as the antechamber of hades nor the theater as the broad highway to damnation hence the enjoyment of these innocent amusements and pleasures was allowed to the saints by the prophet and by the church since his day to the scandal perhaps of some sections of orthodox christendom sicajasic9j7r9ra joseph smith encouraged musical organizations of both religious and recreational types during the early days of the church in nauvoo he supported a quadrille band which fre- quently played for dancing 10 at least two other bands a mar- tial band and william pitt s nauvoo brass band an orches- tra and several choirs of mixed voices musical instruments in the homes at nauvoo included several melodeonsmelodeons three organs and two pianos two of the latter instruments were brought to salt lake valley with the 1948 migration duets and quartets of flutes and violins were known in nauvoo 11 music of all kinds affected the lives of the early latter day saints austin fife has described a distinctive body of mormon folksong according to wilkes 12 wheelwright views the hymnody of the cormonsmormons as a potent social influence dur- ing the     Alexander Baugh: Historic Markers in Montrose and Keokuk 175 Remembering the Mormons in Lee County, Iowa: Marking the Past in Montrose and Keokuk Alexander L. Baugh In 2001, Fred E. Woods, a professor of Church History and Doctrine at Brigham Young University, took a five-month leave of absence from BYU to accept a research-teaching fellowship at the University of Missouri—St. Louis. At UMSL, Woods taught an honors course in nineteenth-century Mormon emigration history. During his time in the St. Louis area, he can- vassed local and regional archives, searching for primary source information about the Mormon migration experience on the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers. In addition, he traveled extensively throughout Missouri, Iowa, west- ern Illinois, and western Kansas, conducting field research associated with Mormon outfitting posts in the early 1850s, including Council Bluffs, Iowa (1852); Keokuk, Iowa (1853); Westport, Missouri (1854); and Atchison, Kansas (1855). It was at this time that Woods began to envision the idea of organizing several sesquicentennial (150th anniversary) commemorations associated with Mormon migration for the early 1850s. For example, the most tragic episode of Mormon migration on the Missouri occurred on 9 April 1852 near Lexington, Missouri, when the steamboat Saluda, en route to Council Bluffs, exploded. Of the 175 on board, estimates suggest that as many as a hundred passengers died, including about two dozen Latter-day Saints.1 Recognizing the significance of the event, Woods conceived the idea of organizing a memorial ceremony to appropriately honor the victims (both Mormon and ALEXANDER L.     ABSTRACT “It was By Reason of Being Mormons that We were Kept at Arms Length”: Mormonism, Freemasonry, and Conflicting Interests on the Illinois Frontier Brady G. Winslow, M.A. Mentor: Thomas S. Kidd, Ph.D. Following the creation of a Masonic lodge in Nauvoo, Illinois, in March 1842, Mormons living in the area enthusiastically joined the fraternity. Despite the eagerness with which Mormons affiliated with the society, many non-Mormon Masons in Illinois viewed the Mormons with suspicion and contempt and justified the distrust they had for the Mormon Masons because the Mormons violated some Masonic principles within their lodge. While the Mormon Masons were guilty of some of the charges brought up against them, these trivial complaints did not warrant the continued antagonism that the Mormon Masons experienced at the hands of other Illinois Masons. Therefore, this thesis argues that anti-Mormonism was the driving force behind the resentment that many Illinois Masons expressed for the Mormon Masons during the first half of the 1840s. HARTLEY MORMON CONNECTIONS to Iowa are noted in early Iowa histories, linger in local and family lore, and show up on Iowa's landscapes and maps.1 Evidence of and stories about Mormon wagon ruts, swales, graves, wells, camping sites, cabins, enter­ prises, and place names are found in the broad swath of south­ em Iowa counties through which the Mormon Trail and its al­ ternates passed, and along the I-80 corridor from Iowa City to Council Bluffs. Unfortunately, observers often confuse or con­ flate the various connections between Mormons and early Iowa history. It is common, for instance, to link all such connections to the two best-known Mormon connections to Iowa: the 1846 wagon companies led by Brigham Young and the 1856-57 handcart brigades. While some Mormon imprints in Iowa do stem from those two groups, others do not.2 In fact, the Mormons had at 1.
