ROBERT2 HOLT (JOHN1 HOLTE) was born Abt. 1605 in Rochdale, Lancashire, England, and died July 1661 in St. Mary's County, Maryland. He married (1) DOROTHY HEYWOOD December 19, 1625 in Cathedral, Manchester, Lancashire, England1. She was born in Lancashire, England, and died Aft. 1673 in Virginia/England. He married (2) CHRISTIAN BONNIFIELD January 28, 1656/57 in St. Mary's County, Maryland. Notes for ROBERT HOLT: Among the earliest definite records of the name Holt in England are those of John Holt of Warwickshire, before 1272; those of Henry de la Holte of Worchestershire, 1273; those of William del Holt of Yorkshire. While it is not definitely known from which of the many lines of the family in England the first emigrants of the name to come to America were descended, it is recorded that the Holts were among the earliest settlers in this country. The first of the name in America was Randall or Randolph Holt who came over in The George in 1620. He married Mary Baily of Hog Island, North Carolina in 1626. He was 13 when he came over. They had two sons, John and Captain Michael Holt. (Descendants of John and Isabel Holt) A James Holt, Lancashire, England was buried in 1632 in Bolton Parish. A Robert, son of John HOLTE was baptised at Rochdale on 5 May 1605. A Robert Holt married Martha HEYWOOD 29 Aug 1621 at Rochdale and Dorothie HEAWOOD married a Robert HOULTE 19 Dec 1625 at Manchester. -

Presented at the John Whitmer Historical Association 41st Annual Meeting, September 27, 2013, Council Bluffs, Iowa. I appreciate being able to critique Joseph Smith’s Polygamy by Brian Hales. The three volumes comprise over thirteen hundred pages. There is a lot of repetition of quotations throughout the volumes. Since plural marriage is the topic of the volumes it would be appropriate to present a brief historical overview. In Latter-day Saint practice there was a gradual development in the custom of marriage. For the first ten years of its existence the church upheld the practice of one man being married to one wife. This position was published in the first edition of the Doctrine and Covenants printed in the state of Ohio. The article indicates that a marriage should be solemnized in public and states the position clearly: "we believe, that one man should have one wife; and one woman, but one husband."1 In the volumes there are repeated references concerning a girl named Fanny Alger, as a wife of Joseph Smith. One source used is by Mosiah Hancock, who was born in 1834. According to this story his father, Levi Hancock, was to perform a marriage ceremony between Joseph Smith and Fanny Alger.2 Oliver Cowdery, assistant church president, indicated there was a problem with Smith’s association with this girl. Smith, according to Cowdery, went back on his word3 and Cowdery withdrew from the church in 1838. -

Stapley 11 “Pouring in Oil”: The Development of the Modern Mormon Healing Ritual Though many believe that ritual behavior is rigid and unchanging, ritual behavior is highly innovative and sensitive to cultural changes and norms. Certainly that holds true in Latter-day Saint practice as our rituals often change both in form and meaning in response to new cultural views. Jonathan Stapley examines this aspect of ritual by review- ing the rich history of Latter-day Saint healing rituals. While worthwhile for its historical content, the chapter also demonstrates the value of ritual innovation and the power that may come from recognizing it in order to retain our cultural heritage and move forward in the modern era. —DB But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him, he had compassion on him, and went to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring in oil and wine, and set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, and took care of him. The Return of Oliver Cowdery
The Return of Oliver Cowdery Scott H. Faulring On Sunday, 12 November 1848, apostle Orson Hyde, president of the Quorum of the Twelve and the church’s presiding ofcial at Kanesville-Council Bluffs, stepped into the cool waters of Mosquito Creek1 near Council Bluffs, Iowa, and took Mormonism’s estranged Second Elder by the hand to rebaptize him. Sometime shortly after that, Elder Hyde laid hands on Oliver’s head, conrming him back into church membership and reordaining him an elder in the Melchizedek Priesthood.2 Cowdery’s rebaptism culminated six years of desire on his part and protracted efforts encouraged by the Mormon leadership to bring about his sought-after, eagerly anticipated reconciliation. Cowdery, renowned as one of the Three Witnesses to the Book of Mormon, corecipient of restored priesthood power, and a founding member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, had spent ten and a half years outside the church after his April 1838 excommunication. Oliver Cowdery wanted reafliation with the church he helped organize. His penitent yearnings to reassociate with the Saints were evident from his personal letters and actions as early as 1842. Oliver understood the necessity of rebaptism. By subjecting himself to rebaptism by Elder Hyde, Cowdery acknowledged the priesthood keys and authority held by the First Presidency under Brigham Young and the Twelve. Oliver Cowdery’s tenure as Second Elder and Associate President ended abruptly when he decided not to appear and defend himself against misconduct charges at the 12 April -

Changes in the West : Mormons and the ecological geography of nationalism by Willard John McArthur A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History Montana State University © Copyright by Willard John McArthur (1999) Abstract: Environmental historians have made fruitful endeavors in exploring the ways in which human communities modify the landscapes in which they live. However, nationalism is one area that has exhibited a tremendous influence on the course of modem history, yet has been little studied in its relationship to the environment. This thesis looks at the ways in which nationalism-a sense of connection to the larger nation— has influenced those modifications, and how those modifications have influenced and affected those making changes. This thesis looks to the early Mormon migrants to the West as a case study on how nationalism has influenced environmental change. Using an interdisciplinary approach, this argument relies on the work of intellectual historians of nationalism, environmental historians, geographers, and ecologists\biologists. Using these studies as a framework, this thesis posits a method for identifying nationalized landscapes: recognizing circumscribed landscapes, simplified environments, and lands that are connected spatial and temporally to the larger nation identifies a nationalized landscape. In particular, this thesis looks at fish, trees, and riparian zones as areas of change. Using the identifying markers of circumscription, simplification, and connection has uncovered that Mormons did indeed make changes in the landscape that were influenced by nationalism. These changes made to the land, influenced by nationalism, created a redesigned nature, that in turn influenced human relationships. -
