Northern Utah was in many ways a Crossroads long before the emigrants, settlers, railroad and military came here. As early as pre-Fremont Native Americans, we find evidence of trails and trade routes across this geographic area. The trappers and traders, both English and American, knew the area and crisscrossed it following many of the Native American trails. They also established new routes. Explorers sought additional routes to avoid natural barriers such as the mountains and the Great Salt Lake. As emigrants and settlers traveled west, knowledge of the area spread. The Crossroads designation was permanently established once the Railroad spanned the nation. -

SMITH The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints was little more than a year old when by conference action a monthly periodical was provided for, as indicated by the fol lowing item from the minutes of a conference held at Hiram, Ohio, September, 1831. THE EVENING AND MORNING STAR A conference was held, in which Brother W. W. Phelps was in structed to stop at Cincinnati on his way to Missouri, and purchase a press and type, for the purpose of establishing and publishing a monthly paper at Independence, Jackson County, Missouri, to be called the "Eve ning and Morning Star."-Times and Seasons, vol. 5, p. 481. ·w. W. Phelps, ifl }larmony with the instructions, went to Cincinnati, Ohio, secured the press and type and proceeded to Independence, Jack son County, Missouri, where he issued a prospectus setting forth his in tentions; extracts from which indicate the attitude of Saints relative to the publication of the message of the Restored. Gospel. The Evening and the Morning Star will be published at Independence, Jackson County, State of Missouri. As the forerunner of the night of the end, and the messenger of the day of redemption, the Star will borrow its light from sacred sources, and be devoted to the revelations of God as made known to his servants by the Holy Ghost, at sundry times since the creation of man, but more especially in these last days, for restoration of the house of Israel. -

MicAael' J2umw Joseph Smith Ill's 1844 Blessing Ana The Mormons of Utah JVlembers of the Mormon Church headquartered in Salt Lake City may have reacted anywhere along the spectrum from sublime indifference to temporary discomfiture to cold terror at the recently discovered blessing by Joseph Smith, Jr., to young Joseph on 17 January 1844, to "be my successor to the Presidency of the High Priesthood: a Seer, and a Revelator, and a Prophet, unto the Church; which appointment belongeth to him by blessing, and also by right."1 The Mormon Church follows a line of succession from Joseph Smith, Jr., completely different from that provided in this document. To understand the significance of the 1844 document in relation to the LDS Church and Mormon claims of presidential succession from Joseph Smith, Jr., one must recognize the authenticity and provenance of the document itself, the statements and actions by Joseph Smith about succession before 1844, the succession de- velopments at Nauvoo after January 1844, and the nature of apostolic succes- sion begun by Brigham Young and continued in the LDS Church today. All internal evidences concerning the manuscript blessing of Joseph Smith III, dated 17 January 1844, give conclusive support to its authenticity. Anyone at all familiar with the thousands of official manuscript documents of early Mormonism will immediately recognize that the document is written on paper contemporary with the 1840s, that the text of the blessing is in the extraordinar- ily distinctive handwriting of Joseph Smith's personal clerk, Thomas Bullock, that the words on the back of the document ("Joseph Smith 3 blessing") bear striking similarity to the handwriting of Joseph Smith, Jr., and that the docu- ment was folded and labeled in precisely the manner all one-page documents were filed by the church historian's office in the 1844 period. -
The Imagined West
CHAPTER 21 The Imagined West FOR more than a century the American West has been the most strongly imagined section of the United States. The West of Anglo American pioneers and Indians began reimagining itself before the conquest of the area was fully complete. In the late nineteenth century, Sitting Bull and Indians who would later fight at Wounded Knee toured Europe and the United States with Buffalo Bill in his Wild West shows. They etched vivid images of Indian fights and buffalo hunts into the imaginations of hundreds of thousands of people. The ceremonials of the Pueblos became tourist attractions even while the Bureau of Indian Affairs and missionaries struggled to abolish them. Stories about the West evolved into a particular genre, the Western, which first as novels and later as films became a defining element of American popular culture. By 1958, Westerns comprised about 11 percent of all works of fiction pubHshed in the United States, and Hollywood turned out a Western movie every week. In 1959 thirty prime-time television shows, induding eight of the ten most watched, were Westerns. Mid-twentieth-century Americans consumed such enormous quantities of imagined adventures set in the West that one might suspect the decline of the Western in the 1970s and 1980s resulted from nothing more than a severe case of cultural indigestion. This gluttonous consumption of fictions about the West is, however, only part of the story. Americans have also actively imagined their own Wests. A century of American children grew up imagining themselves to be cowboys and Indians. -

mormon bibliography 1962 the 1962 mormon bibliography follows the same pattern that has been established in previous issues of brigham young university studies it consists of items listed in the 1962 volume v 3 of mormon americana which deal specifically with mormon subjects mormon americana begun in 1960 is a cooperative listing of materials concerning the church of jesus christ of latter day saints and utah for the purpose of providing contributing libraries both within and out of the state of utah with a better chance of maintaining bibliograph- ic control of this area it is not intended as a polished bibliog- raphy of mormon americana materials but only as a media wherein material is listed which might be of interest for those libraries collecting extensively in mormon americana from this semimonthlysemi monthly the following bibliography is drawn in it is a cross section of materials written about the mormon church which would be of interest to scholars of various academic fields no material from church publications or official publications of the state of utah are listed due to the fact that they can be located with very little difficulty though mormon americana lists material concerning the westward movement overland journeys and books which have small sections dealing with the church this bibliography at- tempts to list only those books and periodical articles which deal exclusively with mormonism reprints of books which are already known to scholars have also been omitted one of the most popular subjects during the year 1962 -

Presented at the John Whitmer Historical Association 41st Annual Meeting, September 27, 2013, Council Bluffs, Iowa. I appreciate being able to critique Joseph Smith’s Polygamy by Brian Hales. The three volumes comprise over thirteen hundred pages. There is a lot of repetition of quotations throughout the volumes. Since plural marriage is the topic of the volumes it would be appropriate to present a brief historical overview. In Latter-day Saint practice there was a gradual development in the custom of marriage. For the first ten years of its existence the church upheld the practice of one man being married to one wife. This position was published in the first edition of the Doctrine and Covenants printed in the state of Ohio. The article indicates that a marriage should be solemnized in public and states the position clearly: "we believe, that one man should have one wife; and one woman, but one husband."1 In the volumes there are repeated references concerning a girl named Fanny Alger, as a wife of Joseph Smith. One source used is by Mosiah Hancock, who was born in 1834. According to this story his father, Levi Hancock, was to perform a marriage ceremony between Joseph Smith and Fanny Alger.2 Oliver Cowdery, assistant church president, indicated there was a problem with Smith’s association with this girl. Smith, according to Cowdery, went back on his word3 and Cowdery withdrew from the church in 1838. -

Just as hastily Robert published the correspondence in his New York City newspaper, the Free Enquirer, not knowing that he would receive another, longer letter from William within days, just in time to be included in his weekly’s next run. What proved to be so pressing was what William had discovered onboard the canal boat: “I have met,” he announced dramatically, “with the famous ‘Book of Mormon.’”1 Published in 1830, the Book of Mormon claimed to be nothing short of scripture, an account of America’s ancient inhabitants (themselves a scattered Hebrew remnant) and God’s dealings with them over a long and bloody history. -

Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage Aaron Joseph Johnson Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY 2014 © 2014 Aaron Joseph Johnson All rights reserved ABSTRACT Jazz and Radio in the United States: Mediation, Genre, and Patronage Aaron Joseph Johnson This dissertation is a study of jazz on American radio. The dissertation's meta-subjects are mediation, classification, and patronage in the presentation of music via distribution channels capable of reaching widespread audiences. The dissertation also addresses questions of race in the representation of jazz on radio. A central claim of the dissertation is that a given direction in jazz radio programming reflects the ideological, aesthetic, and political imperatives of a given broadcasting entity. I further argue that this ideological deployment of jazz can appear as conservative or progressive programming philosophies, and that these tendencies reflect discursive struggles over the identity of jazz. The first chapter, "Jazz on Noncommercial Radio," describes in some detail the current (circa 2013) taxonomy of American jazz radio. The remaining chapters are case studies of different aspects of jazz radio in the United States. Chapter 2, "Jazz is on the Left End of the Dial," presents considerable detail to the way the music is positioned on specific noncommercial stations. Chapter 3, "Duke Ellington and Radio," uses Ellington's multifaceted radio career (1925-1953) as radio bandleader, radio celebrity, and celebrity DJ to examine the medium's shifting relationship with jazz and black American creative ambition.
