The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints N 1820, A YOUNG FARM BOY in search of truth has a vision of God Ithe Father and Jesus Christ. Three years later, an angel guides him to an ancient record buried in a hill near his home. With God’s help, he translates the record and organizes the Savior’s church in the latter days. Soon others join him, accepting the invitation to become Saints through the Atonement of Jesus Christ. 1815–1846 But opposition and violence follow those who defy old traditions to embrace restored truths. The women and men who join the church must choose whether or not they will stay true to their covenants, establish Zion, and proclaim the gospel to a troubled world. Remembering our shared legacy of faith, devotion, and perseverance gives us perspective and strength as we face the challenges of our day. It is with this desire to remember “how merciful the Lord hath been unto the children of men” (Moroni 10:3) that we present Saints: The Story of the Church of Jesus Christ in the Latter Days. This is the first volume of a four-volume series. It is a narrative history that includes stories of faithful Latter-day Saints of the past. We encourage all to read the book and make use of the supplementary material available online. You are an important part of the continuing history of this Church. We thank you for all you do to build on the foundation of faith laid by our forebears. We testify that Jesus Christ is our Savior and that His gospel is the standard of truth today. The Lord called Joseph Smith to be His prophet, seer, and revelator in the latter days, and He continues to call living prophets and apostles to guide His Church. We pray that this volume will enlarge your under- standing of the past, strengthen your faith, and help you make and keep the covenants that lead to exaltation and eternal life. Sincerely, The First Presidency PREFACE True stories well told can inspire, caution, entertain, and instruct. Brigham Young understood the power of a good story when he counseled Church historians to do more than simply record the dry facts of the past. “Write in a narrative style,” he advised them, and “write only about one tenth part as much.”1 What follows is a narrative history designed to give readers a foundational understanding of Church history. Every scene, character, and line of dialogue is founded in historical sources, which are cited at the end of the book. Those who wish to read these sources, better understand related topics, and discover even more stories can find links to additional resources online at history.churchofjesuschrist.org. This book is the first of a four-volume history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Together, the volumes tell the story of the Restoration of the gos-pel of Jesus Christ from the earliest days of the Church until now. They are written in an engaging style that is accessible to the Saints throughout the world. The Church has published two multivolume his- tories in the past. The first was a documentary history begun by Joseph Smith in the 1830s and published beginning in 1842.

    Witnesses of the Book of Mormon Richard Lloyd Anderson Witnesses of the Book of Mormon Beginning with the rst edition of 1830, the Book of Mormon has generally contained two sets of testimonies— the “Testimony of Three Witnesses” and the “Testimony of Eight Witnesses.” When Joseph Smith rst obtained the gold plates, he was told to show them to no one. As translation progressed, he and those assisting him learned, both in the pages of the Book and by additional revelation, that three special witnesses would know, by the power of God, “that these things are true” and that several besides himself would see the plates and testify to their existence (Ether 5:2—4; 2 Ne. 27:12—13; D&C 5:11—13). The testimonies of the witnesses afrm that these things occurred. The witnesses were men known for truthfulness and sobriety. Though each of the Three Witnesses was eventually excommunicated from the Church (two returned), none ever denied or retracted his published testimony. Each reafrmed at every opportunity the veracity of his testimony and the reality of what he had seen and experienced. A June 1829 revelation conrmed that Oliver Cowdery, David Whitmer, and Martin Harris would be the Three Witnesses (D&C 17). Soon thereafter, they, with Joseph Smith, retired to the woods near Fayette, New York, and prayed for the promised divine manifestation. The “Testimony of Three Witnesses” summarizes the supernatural event that followed, when an angel appeared and showed them the plates and engravings and they heard the Lord declare that the Book of Mormon was “translated by the gift and power of God.” They said that the same divine voice “commanded us that we should bear record of it.” Joseph Smith’s mother later recounted Joseph’s great relief at no longer being the sole witness of the divine experiences of the restoration (see witnesses, law of).

While early Mormonism took place in America, it can be interpreted as a reaction to American culture, and this is perhaps best seen in the Mormon doctrine of gathering. One Historian observed that gathering “was Mormonism‟s oldest and most influential doctrine.”1 Joseph Smith introduced that concept only months after he organized the church in a late December 1830 revelation that commanded Smith and his followers to “assemble together at the Ohio.”2 Mormon convert John Whitmer explained that the Mormons were “[slow] to be made to believe the commandments that came forth in these last days for the upbuilding of the kingdom of God.”3 In consequence, at a church conference held in Fayette, New York, on January 2, 1831, Joseph Smith presented another revelation concerning the gathering to Ohio.

MicAael' J2umw Joseph Smith Ill's 1844 Blessing Ana The Mormons of Utah JVlembers of the Mormon Church headquartered in Salt Lake City may have reacted anywhere along the spectrum from sublime indifference to temporary discomfiture to cold terror at the recently discovered blessing by Joseph Smith, Jr., to young Joseph on 17 January 1844, to "be my successor to the Presidency of the High Priesthood: a Seer, and a Revelator, and a Prophet, unto the Church; which appointment belongeth to him by blessing, and also by right."1 The Mormon Church follows a line of succession from Joseph Smith, Jr., completely different from that provided in this document. To understand the significance of the 1844 document in relation to the LDS Church and Mormon claims of presidential succession from Joseph Smith, Jr., one must recognize the authenticity and provenance of the document itself, the statements and actions by Joseph Smith about succession before 1844, the succession de- velopments at Nauvoo after January 1844, and the nature of apostolic succes- sion begun by Brigham Young and continued in the LDS Church today. All internal evidences concerning the manuscript blessing of Joseph Smith III, dated 17 January 1844, give conclusive support to its authenticity. Anyone at all familiar with the thousands of official manuscript documents of early Mormonism will immediately recognize that the document is written on paper contemporary with the 1840s, that the text of the blessing is in the extraordinar- ily distinctive handwriting of Joseph Smith's personal clerk, Thomas Bullock, that the words on the back of the document ("Joseph Smith 3 blessing") bear striking similarity to the handwriting of Joseph Smith, Jr., and that the docu- ment was folded and labeled in precisely the manner all one-page documents were filed by the church historian's office in the 1844 period.

    FINDING THE THREAD RESTORATION OF A PROFESSIONAL WEAVER'S LOOM Rabbit Goody A special and unusual loom frame from the first half of the nine­ teenth century now in the collection of the Ontario Agricultural Mu­ seum, Milton, Ontario,1 has provided an opportunity to examine some of the specialized equipment used by weavers in the nineteenth century to weave cloth with speed, intricate geometric patterns, and/or accommodate longer lengths of cloth. Surviving examples of cloth have made it apparent that trained weavers, weaving fancy cloth during the nineteenth century were using more complex equipment than that commonly associated with home textile produc­ tion. However, until now surviving examples of the equipment have been scarce. The museum's loom is one of a small number that can be linked to the production of the more complex cloths of this pe­ riod. At least, it has specialized equipment which professional weavers might choose to place on their looms. It is the most com­ plete example currently known. In their book, "Keep Me Warm One Night", Dorothy and Harold Burnham have identified this loom as being a professional weaver's loom because of its specialized features.2 It is being restored for the purpose of reproducing some of the more intricate cloth woven by professional weavers in the Niagara Peninsula. The survival of this loom frame, with its special features, has made it possible to set certain criteria for identifying other looms used by professionals and to corroborate the descrip­ tions of equipment and methods found in publications and manuscripts from the last half of the eighteenth century and early nineteenth century used to weave fancy cloth rapidly by profes­ sionals.

    Mormonism: From Its New York Beginnings LEONARD J. ARRINGTON THAT THE HANDFUL of early Mormon converts decided to migrate from New York only nine months after their church was organized has led some scholars to suppose that the basic influence on Latter-day Saint doctrines and institu- tions stemmed from their experiences in Ohio, Missouri, Illinois, and Utah.1 This would seem the right time and place for me to discuss five developments which occurred in the Palmyra area in the 1820s and 1830 which, as it turned out, formed the principal themes or building blocks of Mormonism in the 150 years that have followed. These events, harbingers of important things to come, were (1) the occurrence of important heavenly visitations, visions, and revelations; (2) the "translation" and publication of the Book of Mormon; (3) the organization of the Church of Christ; (4) the inauguration of missonary work; and (5) the commencement of mutual aid and helpfulness. From these five seeds, planted in the Palmyra nursery of Mormonism, have grown the essential programs of the Restoration, a movement that has found embodi- ment in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS or Mormon) and the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints (RLDS) and also in some smaller units independent of those two major denominations.2 The first event, of course, was the personal vision of Joseph Smith, Jr., believed to have taken place in a grove of trees on a woodlot on the Smith family farm in Manchester township near Palmyra in the spring of 1820.3 As related by him a few years later, he had gone to many religious services, studied the Bible intently, conducted conversations with many believers, and become "convicted of my sins."     Joseph Knight’s Recollection of Early Mormon History Dean Jessee n 22 August 1842, while reflecting upon the “faithful few” who had Ostood by him “in every hour of peril,” Joseph Smith recorded the following sentiments about Joseph Knight: [He] was among the number of the first to administer to my necessi- ties, while I was laboring in the commencement of the bringing forth of the work of the Lord, and of laying the foundation of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. For fifteen years he has been faith- ful and true, and even-handed and exemplary, and virtuous and kind, never deviating to the right hand or to the left. Behold he is a righteous man, may God Almighty lengthen out the old man’s days; and may his trembling, tortured, and broken body be renewed, and in the vigor of health turn upon him if it be Thy will, consistently, O God; and it shall be said of him, by the sons of Zion, while there is one of them remain- ing, that this was a faithful man in Israel; therefore his name shall never be forgotten.1 Joseph Knight, Sr., was born 3 November 1772 at Oakham, Worces- ter, Massachusetts. In 1809 he moved to Bainbridge, Chenango County, New York and two years later to Colesville, Broome County, New York where he remained for nineteen years. He owned a farm, a gristmill and carding machine, and according to his son, Newel, “was not rich, yet possessed enough of this world’s goods to secure to himself and family the necessaries and comforts of life.” His family consisted of three sons and four daughters.2 While Joseph Smith was living in Harmony, Pennsylvania he was occasionally employed by Joseph Knight.

Mason Studies of violence in the late nineteenth-century South focus almost exclusively on racial and political violence against African Americans. While this emphasis is both understandable and appropriate, what has been largely neglected is the violence committed against religious outsiders, and more generally their overall treatment in what was essentially a hegemonic culture of evangelical Protestantism. In addition to the many instances of violence against African American churches and ministers, the South also witnessed dozens of episodes of anti-Jewish violence and literally hundreds of cases of anti-Mormon violence from 1865 to 1910. Acknowledging and understanding this relatively hidden chapter in American history provides us with unique insights into postbellum southern culture and the sometimes violent side of the American experiment in religious pluralism. This dissertation adds to the growing body of scholarship exploring the relationships between religion and violence in southern history and American history more broadly by making three primary contributions. First, it uncovers numerous untold narratives of violence against southern religious outsiders.
