Witnesses of the Book of Mormon Richard Lloyd Anderson Witnesses of the Book of Mormon Beginning with the rst edition of 1830, the Book of Mormon has generally contained two sets of testimonies— the “Testimony of Three Witnesses” and the “Testimony of Eight Witnesses.” When Joseph Smith rst obtained the gold plates, he was told to show them to no one. As translation progressed, he and those assisting him learned, both in the pages of the Book and by additional revelation, that three special witnesses would know, by the power of God, “that these things are true” and that several besides himself would see the plates and testify to their existence (Ether 5:2—4; 2 Ne. 27:12—13; D&C 5:11—13). The testimonies of the witnesses afrm that these things occurred. The witnesses were men known for truthfulness and sobriety. Though each of the Three Witnesses was eventually excommunicated from the Church (two returned), none ever denied or retracted his published testimony. Each reafrmed at every opportunity the veracity of his testimony and the reality of what he had seen and experienced. A June 1829 revelation conrmed that Oliver Cowdery, David Whitmer, and Martin Harris would be the Three Witnesses (D&C 17). Soon thereafter, they, with Joseph Smith, retired to the woods near Fayette, New York, and prayed for the promised divine manifestation. The “Testimony of Three Witnesses” summarizes the supernatural event that followed, when an angel appeared and showed them the plates and engravings and they heard the Lord declare that the Book of Mormon was “translated by the gift and power of God.” They said that the same divine voice “commanded us that we should bear record of it.” Joseph Smith’s mother later recounted Joseph’s great relief at no longer being the sole witness of the divine experiences of the restoration (see witnesses, law of).

This group represented many aspects of Mormon belief, different areas of eXpertise, and varying approaches to dealing with challenging information. Their stories create a beautiful tapestry of Mormon life in the transition years from polygamy, frontier life, and resistance to statehood, assimilation, and respectability. A study of the people involved illuminates an important, overlooked, underappreciated, and eXciting period of Mormon history.

Faulring: Jackson County Marriages by LDS Elders 197 Early Marriages Performed by the Latter-day Saint Elders in Jackson County, Missouri, 1832-1834 Compiled and Edited with an Introduction by Scott H. Faulring During the two and a half years (1831-1833) the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints lived in Jackson County, Missouri, they struggled to establish a Zion community. In July 1831, the Saints were commanded by revelation to gather to Jackson County because the Lord had declared that this area was “the land of promise” and designat- ed it as “the place for the city of Zion” (D&C 57:2). During this period, the Mormon settlers had problems with their immediate Missourian neighbors. Much of the friction resulted from their religious, social, cultural and eco- nomic differences. The Latter-day Saint immigrants were predominantly from the northeastern United States while the “old settlers” had moved to Missouri from the southern states and were slave holders. Because of the Missouri Compromise of 1820, Missouri was a slave state. Eventually, by mid-July 1833, a militant group of Jackson County Missourians became intolerant of the Mormons and began the process of forcefully expelling them from the county.1 And yet in spite of these mounting hostilities, a little-known aspect of the Latter-day Saints’ stay in Jackson County is that during this time, the Mormon elders were allowed to perform civil marriages. In contrast to the legal difficulties some of the elders faced in Ohio, the Latter-day Saint priest- hood holders were recognized by the civil authorities as “preachers of the gospel.”2 Years earlier, on 4 July 1825, Missouri enacted a statute entitled, “Marriages.

Significantly, in the revelation received dur- ing the organizational meeting of the Church on April 6, 1830, the first title given to the first elder was that of seer: “Behold, there shall be a record kept . and in it thou [Joseph Smith] shalt be called a seer, a translator, a prophet, an apostle of Jesus Christ” (D&C 21:1). In the Book of Mormon, Ammon defined a seer as one who pos- sessed “a gift from God” to translate ancient records (Mosiah 8:13; see also 28:11–16). However, the seeric gift is not limited to translation, hence Ammon’s additional statement that “a seer is a revelator and a prophet also; and a gift which is greater can no man have” (Mosiah 8:16).

ABSTRACT This cultural history of Mormonism in Kirtland, Ohio, from 1831 to 1837 uses Agenda Setting and Vilification Theories to analyze 1,617 articles from 325 newspapers published during those years. This unprecedented number of sources enabled the researcher to identify how nineteenth-century print culture and texts about and by the Mormons created, shaped, changed, and directed the trajectory of Mormonism in its formative years. The qualitative examination exposed the most recurring topics on Mormonism in papers across the country, including the phenomenon of editors’ specific efforts to create a cultural enemy of Joseph Smith; the editorial tone used while writing about such news; the number of times identical or similar texts were reprinted in the newspaper exchange; and the dispersion and geographical reach of readers throughout the United States.

Baugh On October 27, 1838, after nearly three months of hostilities between Mormon and Missouri settlers in Daviess, Carroll, Ray, and Caldwell Counties, Missouri, Governor Lilburn W. Boggs signed an executive order authorizing the state militia to subdue the Mormon populace and force their surrender, and ordered them to evacuate the state.1 The order was carried out by Samuel D. Lucas, a major general in the state militia and the commander of the troops from Jackson and Lafayette Counties. The day before issuing the “Extermination Order,” Boggs relieved Major General David R. Atchison of his command of the state militia in the Northern District.2 Atchison’s release probably stemmed from the fact that he had served as legal counsel to Joseph Smith and was at least partially sympathetic of the Mormons. Boggs replaced Atchison with John B. Clark of Howard County. However, since Clark was not on the scene to take charge, Lucas assumed command. On October 31, General Lucas and his officers negotiated a peaceful, albeit unfair settlement with a five-man Mormon delegation led by George M. Hinkle, commander of the Caldwell County militia. The final conditions of surrender called for the Mormons to make an appropriation of property to cover any indemnities caused during the Missouri conflict, give up their arms, ALEX A N D ER L.
