Sengoku was originally released ni 1999 to criticial acclaim, excellent reviews and, soon after its release, an award for best Historic Game of 1999 (awarded by AniMail Newsletter, from Central park media). The popularity of the “samurai” genre is undisputable. Back in the early days of the role-playing and adventure gaming hobby, games such as Land of the Rising Sun and Bushidô brought the earliest glimpses of feudal Japan to the gaming table. There was a lull in samurai gaming, though over the years other games appealing to samurai fans were released, from card games to board games. I discovered Bushidô thanks to a freind of mine and fellow gamer, and I was hooked. That same year I saw the Shôgun mini-series fr the first time. I began a search to see as many samurai films as I could. Seven Samurai, Sanjuro, Yojimbo, Shôgun Assassin, Kage no Gundan...these films and television programs filled my mind and heart. Big screen or small, there was no samurai film and no period drama I could turn away from. I was a sponge. There was no turning back. As I ventured into publishing—mostly doing lcensed Hero System supplements—I decided to return to my one true love of gaming: Bushidô. I contacted the authors, Paul Hume and Robert Charrette about revising and relaunching the game in a new edition. A short time later we had a signed agreement and Bushidô Third Edition was in development! A short time later a card game was released that, once again, popularized the feudal Japanese setting in adventure games. Legend of the Five Rings was a hit, and thousands of new fans of the genre were born. An L5R role-playing game was planned soon to follow the card game. AEG approached me to work on the L5R project and to write the L5R RPG core book, knowing that I had already landed the Bushidô license and that I had a penchant for historical, feudal Japan and all things samurai. As fate would have it, AEG decided to go with a more “high fantasy”-style setting for their games and, ultimately, with an in-house developer— John Wick. The collectible card game was released, once again, popularized the feudal Japanese setting in adventure games. Legend of the Five Rings CCG was a hit, and thousands of new fans of the genre were born. The L5R role-playing game was released not long after, and bth continue to be enjoyed by fans around the world. (The L5R games are beautiful—and fun! If you’re into a more high fantasy, amalgamized Asian setting, check them out! To complicate things further, Fantasy Games Unlimited (publishers of the 1981 edition of Bushidô, contacted me re- garding our plan to publish Bushidô Third Edition. FGU maintained a claim of the Bushidô trademark. Though we had a license to publish the rules, they disputed our intended use of the Bushidô name. After discussions with FGU, we ulti- mately decided to develop our own, new game. The result of several years of work and the wonderful talents of many people listed in the credits page is what you hold in your hands. Sengoku is a work of love: a love of the history, a love ofthe culture, a love of the chanbara and jidai-geki, and a love of gaming.     別紙2 Regular Exhibition "History of Japanese Literature Based on Books" Materials List, Part I 名 称 名称ふりがな 解 説 I Literature in Jodai じょうだいのぶんがく (Ancient Times) While Japanese history often uses the term "kodai" to mean ancient times, the history of literature generally calls the times before the Heian period "jodai." Its beginning is uncertain, but its end is defined as the end of the 8th century. Politically, the state had progressed to unity and completion of its regime during this period. From the perspective of literature, this period was the time when Japanese people—who had not had characters for writing—first met kanji or Chinese characters and attempted various ways to express themselves using kanji. Literature in the period primarily when the capital was at Yamato before it was transferred to Heian-kyo in 794. While the categories range from myths to legends, songs, waka or Japanese poetry, Chinese poetry, Literature in Jodai じょうだいのぶんがく biographies, histories and topographies, there were not so many works as a whole. Every extant work containing ancient contents was actually compiled into a book in the Nara period (710–794). Some of those books were established against the background of the regime establishment of the state. Kojiki was established in 712. O no Yasumaro composed this book by writing down the ancient history inherited by Hieda no Are. Kojiki contains the history from the age of the gods to the reign of Empress Suiko (reign: 593–629). Nihon Shoki was established in 720 through a compilation carried out by Prince Myths and History しんわ・れきし Toneri.

    Guts and Tears Kinpira Jōruri and Its Textual Transformations Janice Shizue Kanemitsu In seventeenth-century Japan, dramatic narratives were being performed under drastically new circumstances. Instead of itinerant performers giving performances at religious venues in accordance with a ritual calendar, professionals staged plays at commercial, secular, and physically fixed venues. Theaters contracted artists to perform monthly programs (that might run shorter or longer than a month, depending on a given program’s popularity and other factors) and operated on revenues earned by charging theatergoers admission fees. A theater’s survival thus hinged on staging hit plays that would draw audiences. And if a particular cast of characters was found to please crowds, producing plays that placed the same characters in a variety of situations was one means of ensuring a full house. Kinpira jōruri 金平浄瑠璃 enjoyed tremendous though short-lived popularity as a form of puppet theater during the mid-1600s. Though its storylines lack the nuanced sophistication of later theatrical narra- tives, Kinpira jōruri offers a vivid illustration of how theater interacted with publishing in Japan during the early Tokugawa 徳川 period. This essay begins with an overview of Kinpira jōruri’s historical background, and then discusses the textualization of puppet theater plays. Although Kinpira jōruri plays were first composed as highly masculinized period pieces revolving around political scandals, they gradually transformed to incorporate more sentimentalism and female protagonists. The final part of this chapter will therefore consider the fundamental characteristics of Kinpira jōruri as a whole, and explore the ways in which the circulation of Kinpira jōruri plays—as printed texts— encouraged a transregional hybridization of this theatrical genre.

    Rules and Options The author has attempted to draw as much as possible from the guidelines provided in the 5th edition Players Handbooks and Dungeon Master's Guide. Statistics for weapons listed in the Dungeon Master's Guide were used to develop the damage scales used in this book. Interestingly, these scales correspond fairly well with the values listed in the d20 Modern books. Game masters should feel free to modify any of the statistics or optional rules in this book as necessary. It is important to remember that Dungeons and Dragons abstracts combat to a degree, and does so more than many other game systems, in the name of playability. For this reason, the subtle differences that exist between many firearms will often drop below what might be called a "horizon of granularity." In D&D, for example, two pistols that real world shooters could spend hours discussing, debating how a few extra ounces of weight or different barrel lengths might affect accuracy, or how different kinds of ammunition (soft-nosed, armor-piercing, etc.) might affect damage, may be, in game terms, almost identical. This is neither good nor bad; it is just the way Dungeons and Dragons handles such things. Who can use firearms? Firearms are assumed to be martial ranged weapons. Characters from worlds where firearms are common and who can use martial ranged weapons will be proficient in them. Anyone else will have to train to gain proficiency— the specifics are left to individual game masters. Optionally, the game master may also allow characters with individual weapon proficiencies to trade one proficiency for an equivalent one at the time of character creation (e.g., monks can trade shortswords for one specific martial melee weapon like a war scythe, rogues can trade hand crossbows for one kind of firearm like a Glock 17 pistol, etc.).

Some Observations on the Weddings of Tokugawa Shogun’s Daughters – Part 1 Abstract In this study I shall discuss the marriage politics of Japan's early ruling families (mainly from the 6th to the 12th centuries) and the adaptation of these practices to new circumstances by the leaders of the following centuries. Marriage politics culminated with the founder of the Edo bakufu, the first shogun Tokugawa Ieyasu (1542-1616). To show how practices continued to change, I shall discuss the weddings given by the fifth shogun sunaT yoshi (1646-1709) and the eighth shogun Yoshimune (1684-1751). The marriages of Tsunayoshi's natural and adopted daughters reveal his motivations for the adoptions and for his choice of the daughters’ husbands. The marriages of Yoshimune's adopted daughters show how his atypical philosophy of rulership resulted in a break with the earlier Tokugawa marriage politics.

Atkins Asian Languages and Literature This study is an attempt to elucidate the complex interrelationship between gender, sexuality, desire, and power by examining how premodern Japanese texts represent the gender-based ideals of women and men at the peak and margins of the social hierarchy. To do so, it will survey a wide range of premodern texts and contrast the literary depictions of two female groups (imperial priestesses and courtesans), two male groups (elite warriors and outlaws), and two groups of Buddhist priests (elite and “corrupt” monks). In my view, each of the pairs signifies hyperfemininities, hypermasculinities, and hypersexualities of elite and outcast classes, respectively. The ultimate goal of 4 this study is to contribute to the current body of research in classical Japanese literature by offering new readings of some of the well-known texts featuring the above-mentioned six groups. My interpretations of the previously studied texts will be based on an argument that, in a cultural/literary context wherein defiance merges with sexual attractiveness and/or sexual freedom, one’s outcast status transforms into a source of significant power.

The exhibition will bring together more than 450 Japanese-owned works of art that express the values that helped shape the aesthetic ideals and social character of the Japanese nation in its feudal age. An unprecedented number of objects officially designated by the Japanese government as National Treasures, Important Cultural Properties and Important Art Objects will be on view in what will be the largest exhibition of its kind ever presented in the West, or even in Japan. This exhibition will appear only in Washington. Japan: The Shaping of Daimyo Culture 1185 - 1868 will be in the East Building of the National Gallery of Art, Oct. 30, 1988 through Jan. 23, 1989. The exhibition is organized by the National Gallery of Art, The Agency for Cultural Affairs of Japan, and The Japan Foundation. The R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Company, The Yomiuri Shimbun and The Nomura Securities Co., Ltd. made the exhibition possible. Japan Air Lines provided transport.
