[email protected] ABSTRACT – SYSTEMATIC UPDATE AND PHYLOGENY OF THE PROTEROTHERIIDAE (MAMMALIA, LITOPTERNA) FROM THE “MESOPOTAMIENSE” (LATE MIOCENE) OF ENTRE RÍOS PROVINCE, ARGENTINA. A systematic update of the species of Proterotheriidae (Litopterna) from the “Mesopotamiense” of Entre Ríos Province (Argentina) is performed, and their phylogenetic relationships with other members of the family are tested. Brachytherium cuspidatum Ameghino is validated (considered nomen dubium hitherto) and a sexual dimorphism is proposed for this species. This idea is based on metric, but not morphological, differences among the specimens included in it, which is supported by a discriminant analysis. Neobrachytherium ameghinoi Soria and Proterotherium cervioides Ameghino are also valid, and Epitherium? eversus (Ameghino) is assigned to the genus Diadiaphorus. Detailed descriptions of the specimens are presented for each taxon, and their diagnosis are revised. Key words: Proterotheriidae, Ituzaingó Formation, Entre Ríos Province, systematics, phylogeny.

CENTRAL AMERICAN PROVINCIALISM AND THE GREAT AMERICAN BIOTIC INTERCHANGE Michael O. Woodburne1,* Alberto L. Cione2,**, and Eduardo P. Tonni2,*** ABSTRACT The age and phyletic context of mammals that dispersed between North and South America during the past 9 m.y. is summarized. The presence of a Central American province of cladogenesis and faunal differentiation is explored. One apparent aspect of such a province is to delay dispersals of some taxa northward from Mexico into the continental United States, largely during the Blancan. Examples are recognized among the various xenar- thrans, and cervid artiodactyls. Whereas the concept of a Central American province has been mentioned in past investigations it is upgraded here. Paratoceras (protoceratid artio- dactyl) and rhynchotheriine proboscideans provide perhaps the most compelling examples of Central American cladogenesis (late Arikareean to early Barstovian and Hemphillian to Rancholabrean, respectively), but this category includes Hemphillian sigmodontine rodents, and perhaps a variety of carnivores and ungulates from Honduras in the medial Miocene, as well as peccaries and equids from Mexico. For South America, Mexican canids and hy- drochoerid rodents may have had an earlier development in Mexico. Remarkably, the first South American immigrants to Mexico (after the Miocene heralds; the xenarthrans Plaina and Glossotherium) apparently dispersed northward at the same time as the first Holarctic taxa dispersed to South America (sigmodontine rodents and the tayassuid artiodactyls). -

E-mail: [email protected] (Received 02 March 2005; revision accepted 14 December 2005) Abstract–Argentine Pampean sediments represent a nearly continuous record of deposition since the late Miocene (∼10 Ma). Previous studies described five localized concentrations of vesicular impact glasses from the Holocene to late Pliocene. Two more occurrences from the late Miocene are reported here: one near Chasicó (CH) with an 40Ar/39Ar age of 9.24 ± 0.09 Ma, and the other near Bahía Blanca (BB) with an age of 5.28 ± 0.04 Ma. In contrast with andesitic and dacitic impact glasses from other localities in the Pampas, the CH and BB glasses are more mafic. They also exhibit higher degrees of melting with relatively few xenoycrysts but extensive quench crystals. In addition to evidence for extreme heating (>1700 °C), shock features are observed (e.g., planar deformation features [PDFs] and diaplectic quartz and feldspar) in impact glasses from both deposits. -
IV. Northern South America EIA/ARI World Shale Gas and Shale Oil Resource Assessment
IV. Northern South America EIA/ARI World Shale Gas and Shale Oil Resource Assessment IV. NORTHERN SOUTH AMERICA SUMMARY Northern South America has prospective shale gas and shale oil potential within marine- deposited Cretaceous shale formations in three main basins: the Middle Magdalena Valley and Llanos basins of Colombia, and the Maracaibo/Catatumbo basins of Venezuela and Colombia, Figure IV-1. The organic-rich Cretaceous shales (La Luna, Capacho, and Gacheta) sourced much of the conventional gas and oil produced in Colombia and western Venezuela, and are similar in age to the Eagle Ford and Niobrara shale plays in the USA. Ecopetrol, ConocoPhillips, ExxonMobil, Shell, and others have initiated shale exploration in Colombia. Colombia’s petroleum fiscal regime is considered attractive to foreign investment. Figure IV-1: Prospective Shale Basins of Northern South America Source: ARI 2013 May 17, 2013 IV-1 IV. Northern South America EIA/ARI World Shale Gas and Shale Oil Resource Assessment For the current EIA/ARI assessment, the Maracaibo-Catatumbo Basin was re-evaluated while new shale resource assessments were undertaken on the Middle Magdalena Valley and Llanos basins. Technically recoverable resources (TRR) of shale gas and shale oil in northern South America are estimated at approximately 222 Tcf and 20.2 billion bbl, Tables IV-1 and IV- 2. Colombia accounts for 6.8 billion barrels and 55 Tcf of risked TRR, while western Venezuela has 13.4 billion barrels and 167 Tcf. Eastern Venezuela may have additional potential but was not assessed due to lack of data. Colombia’s first publicly disclosed shale well logged 230 ft of over-pressured La Luna shale with average 14% porosity. -

Abstract: One of the basal Glyptodontidae groups is represented by the Propalaehoplophorinae (late Oligocene - mid- dle Miocene), whose genera (Propalaehoplophorus, Eucinepeltus, Metopotoxus, Cochlops, and Asterostemma) were initially recognized in Argentinian Patagonia. Among these, Asterostemma was characterized by its wide latitudinal distribution, ranging from southernmost (Patagonia) to northernmost (Colombia, Venezuela) South America. How- ever, the generic assignation of the Miocene species from Colombia and Venezuela (A.? acostae, A. gigantea, and A. venezolensis) was contested by some authors, who explicitly accepted the possibility that these species could corre- spond to a new genus, different from those recognized in southern areas. A new comparative study of taxa from Argen- tinian Patagonia, Colombia and Venezuela (together with the recognition of a new genus and species for the Pliocene of the latter country) indicates that the species in northern South America are not Propalaehoplophorinae, but represent the first stages in the cladogenesis of the Glyptodontinae glyptodontids, the history of which was heretofore restricted to the late Miocene - early Holocene of southernmost South America. -

[email protected] ABSTRACT. Paleogene records of Cingulata Glyptodontidae are scarce. The only well described comes from the Paleogene of Argentine Patagonia. Two subfamilies have been reported for that period: Glyptatelinae and Propalaehoplophorinae. Until this contribution, the latter taxon was geographically restricted to the locality of El Pajarito (Late Oligocene, Deseadan SALMA), Chubut province, Argentina. Here we present and describe the northernmost record of a Paleogene Propalaehoplophorinae. The material is represented by three associated osteoderms of the dorsal carapace from the Fray Bentos Formation (Late Oligocene, Deseadan SALMA) in the locality of Cueva del Tigre, Chajarí, Entre Ríos province, Argentina.
