Rio Branco, AC, Brasil 2 Instituto Federal de Rondônia (IFRO), Ji-Paraná, Rondônia, Brasil E-mails: [email protected]; [email protected],�������� alice.�����������������[email protected] Recebido em: 09/09/2011 Aprovado em: 30/10/2011 Abstract This study presents an almost complete mandible of Octodontobradys sp. from the late Miocene-Pliocene of the Solimões Formation from a locality on the border between Brazil and Bolivia, in southwestern Amazonia. The two almost complete mandibular rami, together with fragments of fossils from other taxa, were found on the left bank of the Abunã River, upriver from the town of Plácido de Castro, in the Brazilian state of Acre. The form of the symphyseal region of the mandible, and the elongated and bilobated outline of the alveoli of the m2-3-4 molariforms place the specimen clearly in the genus Octodontobradys. However, the new specimen differs from O. �uruensis in (a) the anterior position of the posterior external aperture of the mandibular canal, and (b) the wider and more anteriorly inclined symphyseal region. The mandible described here represents the first specimen of the genusOctodontobradys found outside of the holotype locality, Talismã, in the Brazilian state of Amazonas and enabled us to emend the diagnoses of Subfamily Octodontobradyinae. -
A New Adianthid Litoptern (Mammalia) from the Miocene of Chile

CIFELLI Oklahoma Museum of Natural History and Department of Zoology University of Oklahoma Norman, OK 73019 USA ABSTRACT A new species of Adianthus is described from the Río Cisnes (type locality of the Friasian age), Miocene of Chile. The species is represented by unusually complete remains, including the first postcranial elements known for a member of the family Adianthidae. In its skeletal anatomy, Adianthus godoyi, new species generally resembles lightly-built Santa- crucian proterotheriids. The new species is unique among litopterns in having the proximal tibia and fibula solidly fused. Like Santacrucian proterotheres, Adianthus godoyi was probably cursorially adapted; the narrowness of the an- terior dental arcade suggest that it was a selective-feeding herbivore, and perhaps consumed mixed vegetation in an open habitat. Adianthus godoyi appears to be closely related and to an as yet unidentified species from the early Santacrucian (Notohippus fauna) of Argentina and to Adianthus bucatus, from the Santacrucian of that country, which otherwise represents the latest known occurrence of the family Adianthidae. The occurrence of Adianthus godoyi in the type fauna of the Friasian thus suggests either that the family was more long-lived than had been previously appreciated, or that the type Friasian local fauna is more similar to those of Santacrucian age than their placement in different land-mammal ages would suggest. ABSTRACT: Pilosa include anteaters (Vermilingua) and sloths (Folivora). Modern tree sloths are represented by two genera, Bradypus and Choloepus (both around 4–6 kg), whereas the fossil record is very diverse, with approximately 90 genera ranging in age from the Oligocene to the early Holocene. Fossil sloths include four main clades, Megalonychidae, Megatheriidae, Nothrotheriidae, and Mylo- dontidae, ranging in size from tens of kilograms to several tons. Modern Vermilingua are represented by three genera, Cyclopes, Tamandua and Myrmecophaga, with a size range from 0.25 kg to about 30 kg, and their fossil record is scarce and fragmentary. The dependence of the body size on phylo- genetic pattern of Pilosa is analysed here, according to current cladistic hypotheses. -
