• Organized by: Research Group on on Statistical MEthods in resTRICted spaceS (METRICS) from the Computer Science, Applied Mathematics and Statistics Department of the University of Girona (UdG). The CoDaCourse is accredited by the International Association for Mathematical Geosciences (www.iamg.org) and supported by the European Regional Section of the International Association for Statistical Computing (http://www.iasc-isi.org).

• Dates/Timetable: 2014 July 7-11; 5 days from 9:00-17:00, including coffee- breaks and lunches (i.e. 30 class room hrs).

• Language: English.

• Instructors from METRICS research group: J.J. Egozcue, V. Pawlowsky, C. Barceló, J. Daunis, J.A. Martín and G. Mateu. Support staff: M. Comas, I. Galván, and M. Vives.

• Contents/Programme: Hypothesis underlying statistical data analysis. The Aitchison geometry of the simplex. Coordinate representation; distributions on the simplex. Exploratory analysis. Linear processes in the simplex; regression. Analysis of irregular data. Introduction to multivariate analysis: manova, cluster and discriminant. • Material: PDF files, data files, and paper copy of slides and lab exercises will be provided.

• Software: Exercises are mainly done with the freeware CoDaPack 2.01 [http://ima.udg.edu/codapack/]. The CoDa-R-packages robCompositions and zCompositions are also used for more demanding statistical techniques, as well as other general R packages: MASS, mvoutlier or HardyWeinberg. For more details, have a look on the “Software INFO” document.

• Practicals: Attendants are strongly encouraged to bring their own laptops for practicals with the software previously installed. If some assistant is unable to bring any laptop or has troubles to install the software, please contact us at [email protected].

• Open seminar sessions: Assistants are encouraged to bring their own data sets and state those questions that would like to be answered during the course. Some of these proposals will be selected for a detailed open discussion. More information in “Case study INFO” document.

• From GIRONA AIRPORT to GIRONA CENTRE:

Girona Airport is located 11 km away from the city of Girona, 90 km from the catalan capital Barcelona and 30 km from the mediterrean sea, the Costa Brava. Most of the flights to Girona are operated by (www.ryanair.com) where the Girona airport is called “Barcelona Girona” airport.

• BUS Airport - Girona: Journey duration: 30 minutes. Timetable: - from the airport [outside the terminal turn right towards the bus parking lot; 50meters], every hour from 5:30am to 0:30am. - from Girona Bus station, every hour from 5:00am to 0:00am. • TAXI: expensive, approx. € 25

• From BARCELONA AIRPORT to BARCELONA CENTRE: Barcelona Airport is located south-west of the city of Barcelona (approx. 12Km). There are two terminals T1 and T2. Most of the low-cost companies operate in terminal T2.

• BUS: http://www.aerobusbcn.com/ Airport bus leaves both from terminal T1 and terminal T2 and goes directly to the centre of Barcelona. There are 4 main stops in the centre: Plaça Espanya, Urgell, Plaça Universitat and Plaça Catalunya. Upon leaving the airport, head straight to the bus stop and you will see a light-blue bus, with the word “Aerobús” on it. When you are travelling from Plaça Catalunya to the airport, make sure that you take the right bus. A1 will take you to terminal T1 and A2 will take you to terminal T2. The number of each bus is written on the front. The journey lasts around 25-30 minutes.

Train station at airport: The train station at the airport is situated opposite T2, and is connected to this terminal via an airbridge. There is also a bustransit service between the Renfe station and T1.

Recommended itinerary: Go from Airport to Barcelona "" Station (3th stop). Most of the services continue to Sant Celoni station. Journey duration: from Airport station to Barcelona “Sants” station, 22minutes.

Timetable: From the airport, from 05:42 to 23:38. Every 30 minutes. Price: € 4.10 approx (2 Renfe zones)

• From BARCELONA CENTRE to GIRONA CENTRE:

5.2 TRAIN: From Barcelona “Sants” station to Girona Timetable: http://www.renfe.com Three different trains: 1. “Regional”: stops in most of stations. Journey: 1:45min. Cheap: €8.40. 2. “MD”: stops only in few stations. Journey: 1:20min. About €12. 3. “AVE-AVANT”: no stops. Fast train. Journey: 38min. About €16. There are two classes: “AVE-class” or “first-class” is expensive, from €38. “Avant-class” or “Tourist-class”, cheaper, about €16.
