Price from: 70 € Introduction Cava is a sparkling wine of Denominación de Origen (DO) status from Catalonia. It may be white (blanc) or rosé (rosat). Only wines produced in the traditional method may be labeled "cava"; those produced by other processes may only be called "sparkling wines". About 95% of all cava is produced in the Penedès area in Catalonia and the two major producers are Codorníu and Freixenet. In the past, cava was referred to as "Spanish champagne", which is no longer permitted under European Union law, since Champagne has Protected Geographical Status (PGS) and Spain entered the EU in 1986. ] Today it is defined by law as a "quality sparkling wine produced in a designated region". The Catalan word cava means "cave" or "cellar". Caves were used in the early days of cava production for the preservation or aging of wine. Catalan winemakers officially adopted the term in 1970 to distinguish their product from French champagne. Codorníu has the oldest winemaking history of Spain since it encompasses 18 generations of a sole family of vinedressers, their progress, their convictions, their creative and innovative ability to improve day by day. In 1872, Josep Raventós Fatjó created the first bottle of cava by applying the traditional method to a combination of Penedès grape varieties: the Macabeo, the Xarello and the Parellada. Since that first innovation, Codorníu has developed a complete range of wines on their premises at Sant Sadurní dAnoia, said premises being declared a National Artistic Historical Monument in 1976 as they represent a key piece of work of Catalan modernism, erected by the architect Puig i Cadafalch. Codorníu represents the history, tradition, passion, innovation and know-how of a family business with more than 450 years of history and which is still a leader for quality Spanish wines and sparkling wines in this day and age. Yet another permanent reminder is one of the town’s old buildings, known as Casa de les Trabucades [House of the Troubles] which still bears the marks of those hostilities. We now know that George Lawrence came to the spa town of Caldes3 after reports appeared in the newspapers, including The Times, on the events of the third civil war between Carlists and Republicans. In the latter half of the period (in contrast to the first half), Real Madrid won no trophies but was crowned the richest club in the world1. Meanwhile, after a disconcerting start, Barcelona won a UEFA Champions League and two La Liga titles, though it struggled financially. By analyzing the two clubs’ strategies and their financial and sporting performance over the chosen period we explore the different ways in which sports organizations can succeed, and how their success can be measured. The purpose of this study is to answer the following questions: What strategies did Real Madrid and Barcelona adopt to bring about this reversal of fortunes in a few short years? What variables explain the difference in outcomes? Are there any differences in their business and sports strategies? We use a matrix to analyze and relate the clubs’ financial and business strategy to their sports strategy.

Andrien ____________________ Adviser History Graduate Program ABSTRACT The Enlightenment, or the "Age of Reason," had a profound impact on eighteenth-century Europe, especially on its religion, producing both outright atheism and powerful movements of religious reform within the Church. The former—culminating in the French Revolution—has attracted many scholars; the latter has been relatively neglected. By looking at "enlightened" attempts to reform popular religious practices in Spain, my project examines the religious fervor of people whose story usually escapes historical attention. "Fiestas and Fervor" reveals the capacity of the Enlightenment to reform the Catholicism of ordinary Spaniards, examining how enlightened or Reform Catholicism affected popular piety in the diocese of Barcelona. This study focuses on the efforts of an exceptional figure of Reform Catholicism and Enlightenment Spain—Josep Climent i Avinent, Bishop of Barcelona from 1766- 1775. The program of “Enlightenment” as sponsored by the Spanish monarchy was one that did not question the Catholic faith and that championed economic progress and the advancement of the sciences, primarily benefiting the elite of Spanish society. In this context, Climent is noteworthy not only because his idea of “Catholic Enlightenment” opposed that sponsored by the Spanish monarchy but also because his was one that implicitly condemned the present hierarchy of the Catholic Church and explicitly ii advocated popular enlightenment and the creation of a more independent “public sphere” in Spain by means of increased literacy and education of the masses.
