It’s almost a year since five out of our six districts suffered from differing degrees of flooding, and the recovery effort since then has been incredible. The way our communities have pulled together during such difficult times this year has been quite inspirational. I have every confidence that if we could give more opportunity for local communities to govern and decide and manage for themselves they would rise to the occasion. There are hundreds of unsung heroes in Cumbria, in all walks of life; they’re 15 called “volunteers”, and we can’t do without 11 them. They deserve our gratitude for they help many and make our communities better places.

There’s no doubt that there are some difficult times ahead; we’re currently working through what the government’s spending cuts will mean for us. The Centre was run by Cumbria Partnership NHS Foundation Trust. However, due to new care standards put in place by the Quality Care Commission, the centre was deemed no longer fit for purpose meaning it would have to close as the building could not be altered to meet the new regulations. This move affected a number of people and the Scrutiny unit were able to help reassure young people and their parents that the new home would be a significant improvement and that their concerns would be considered.
