Recognising the long tradition of distilling in Australia and the emergence of the new generation of spirits and liqueur producers, the ADSA provides Australian distillers with a valuable benchmarking opportunity to drive innovation and improve quality. The interest and growth of the ADSA is extraordinary. This year we received a record 619 entries, which is an eighty percent increase on last year. Thank you to all of the 162 exhibitors who entered awards this year. Due to COVID-19 and in particular national travel restrictions and social distancing measures, we needed to innovate and conduct the judging online. Maintaining a safe workspace for the judges was integral to this decision, made in consultation with our Industry Advisory Group. By judging online, we were able to maintain the involvement of high calibre judges and ensure that entries were assessed by the distilling industry’s best people. To assess these spirits, it required the largest judging team we have ever assembled for the ADSA, with 41 judges providing their skills and expertise across three days of judging. A huge thank you to Seb Costello, Head Judge along with other Industry Advisory Group members of Stuart Gregor, Sebastian Raeburn and Cameron Syme for their support, counsel and commitment in assisting the RASV to successfully proceed with judging the 2020 ADSA. Thank you also to all the judges for volunteering their valuable time and in particular, for embracing the online judging format. We are most grateful for your support and involvement. This year 53 gold, 204 silver and 203 bronze medals were awarded. Each of these medal winners now have a unique opportunity to use the highly valued ADSA seal of excellence in their marketing and promotion. In total 14 trophies were awarded, of which, there are two new trophies this year to recognise the Victorian distilling, namely the Champion Victorian Distiller and Champion Victorian Gin. It would not be possible to conduct the ADSA without the wonderful and generous support of our ADSA sponsors. Thank you to Dan Murphy’s, Plumm, Cryer Malt, Plasdene Glass-Pak, Bintani Australia, Fermentis and Joe White Maltings, along with the Australian Distillers Association as a Supporting Partner. Finally, congratulations to all the medal and trophy winners. The RASV trusts that you will enjoy great value and benefit from your success in the 2020 ADSA. We look forward to the Australian distilling industry and the ADSA continuing to grow and prosper in 2021. Brad Jenkins, Chief Executive Officer Australian Distilled 6 Spirits Awards Message from the Head Judge SEB COSTELLO AUSTRALIAN DISTILLED SPIRITS AWARDS HEAD JUDGE Who would have thought only five years ago that we would be able to judge 619 Australian spirits in a world class competition. The industry is looking very bright and the spirits coming out of the distilleries are first class. The industry has grown from cottage to craft in such a short space of time, but it is great to see that the camaraderie of the industry has remained and is only getting stronger. This year’s judging was originally planned to commence in March, but unfortunately a Melbourne lockdown came into effect two weeks earlier. When Michael Katoa suggested judging online, I was extremely excited to give it a chance as the Australian Distilled Spirits Awards are an important opportunity for distillers to put their spirits up against the rest of the industry. When lockdown eased in October, it was a huge effort to pack and mail all of the exhibits for the judges to assess the spirits online. The huge jump in entries from 337 last year to 619 this year required a substantial increase in the number of judges. To all of the 41 judges, I am very thankful for your professionalism and time in such a trying environment, especially the people who were judging for the first time in this competition. It is really important to grow the skills of independently judging spirits and I found the overall skill and dedication of this group to be second to none. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank the panel chairs in Sebastian Reaburn, Lee Potter Cavanagh, Julian White, Fred Siggins, Shaun Byrne, Tim Gniel, Sam Bygrave, Ollie Margan, Tim Stone and Sacha La Forgia for keeping the panels on track. The challenge presented to the team from the RASV was testing, but everyone involved did an excellent job. Brad Jenkins, Michael Katoa, Kirsten Stubbings and Andrew Toms delivered a very professionally organised competition. I am very grateful that such an outstanding team was behind me in my first year as Head Judge. It was a real privilege to be involved.
