BSC_BASIC TECHNOLOGY_JS1 WOODWORK HAND TOOLS A wood worker uses different types of tools to carry out different operations. Some of the tools are manually operated while some are operated while some are operated by electricity. The manually operated tools are hand tools while the electrically operated are called power tools. Examples of wood workers are: Carpenter, a furniture/cabinet maker and a wood carver. The wood worker use tools to carry out operations such as measuring, cutting, boring, setting, marking and driving. Measuring Tools are used for measuring or transferring dimensions like length, width, height, depth, radius and circumference. Examples of measuring tools are: a. Metric ruler e.g. wooden, plastic and steel ruler b. Calipers e.g. inside calipers, outside calipers and odd-leg calipers c. Dividers Setting and Marking tools a. Try square b. Sliding bevel c. The mitre square d. The compasses e. Marking gauge f. Trammel [to mark out large diameters combination of metal and wood] Driving tools a. Hammer e.g. Ball pein hammer, Cross Pein Hammer, straight Pein hammer b. Mallet: are used like hammer but used especially where hammer is considered too strong for a work. It is a plastic or rubber head and wooden handle. c. Screw drivers: e.g. flat screwdriver, star screwdriver, Allen screwdriver, off- set screwdriver. d. Punches e.g. centre punch, pin punch, dot punch Boring tools: For making holes on wood a. The brace: The brace are of two types; - Plain brace - Ratchet brace (when ratchet is fitted to a brace it is called ratchet brace) b. Bradawl c. Gimlet Holding Tools: For holding work piece a. The Bench vice b. The bench hook c. The clamp: used to assemble work piece together after gluing e.g. i. The G-Clamp ii. The F-Clamp iii. The Sash Clamp Cutting Tools: common cutting tools are saw, plane, spoke shave and chisel The Saw: e.g. Rip Saw, cross-cutting saw, the tenon saw, bow saw, the dovetail saw, coping saw, the panel saw, the key-hole saw.
