Well, another year and another USS Haynsworth Reunion is now history. Twenty Four Shipmates and thirty six Family and Friends of the Haynsworth were in attendance !! I would first like to thank Jack Henline, SK3/c 1959 to 1961, for the exceptional DVD he provided to me for use in this 2015 ‘REUNION ISSUE’. In addition to letters and e-mail I have received since the July issue, I will include as many reunion photos as I can fit in. Thanks also to Jim Murphy, Johnny Pascucci, and Charlie Delahanty for sending in their photo’s from the reunion. BRAVO ZULU to you all! Dear James,-----Thanks for all the work you’ve been doing for so many years to make the Haynsworth Association newsletters, and reunions continue to be a leading example of such activities. I get newsletters and reunion notices from a number of the ships and commands in which I’ve served in my 27 years. Among them, yours are leaders. Looking at the July 2015 newsletter prompted me to look at when I last paid dues. To my chagrin it looks like the last time was in 2010. So I’m sending this snail mail so I can enclose a check. I will continue to look forward to the Haynsworth newsletters but will be happy to receive them in digital form only. Your fathers passing will also be documented in our ‘TAPS’ Book and also in the next issue of the USS Haynsworth’s newsletter around December or January. If you like, I will mail thet issue to you and/or E-mail our E- newsletter. If I may ask, if you have any pictures of your father in uniform (or not) I will try to include it in the newsletter.. In fact, if your father had any pictures from his tim aboard the Haynsworth and you wouldn’t mind sharing with us, they would be appreciated and returned to you. Again, with deep sympathy, we mourn the passing of you father and our Shipmate.-----

As I research my next book about the Vought F4U Corsair pilot rescues during WWII, a tidbit about ‘Phalanx Against the Devine Wind’, and the importance of the arises. Primary rescue efforts employed included ‘coast watchers’, PBY Catalina’s, Kingfisher’ OS2U planes, Grumman ‘Ducks’, submarines, ‘crash boats’, and destroyers. The coast watchers are generally credited with the rescue of 188 airmen. PBY’s are acknowledged to have saved 540 airmen, PBM Mariners also saved over 200 pilots and crew. However, Squadron 62, (DD’s 696 thru 704) in it’s first 100 days of combat saved over 60 pilots and aircrew! My apologies to Brad and Mrs. Powell for this delay.) Hey Jim,-----Here’s a check to keep me covered for the next few years. I’m going to make every effort to get to the reunion in Baton Rouge. I’m still running the (USS) Saratoga Association. We have our 63rd annual reunion coming up this September in Louisville (KY). So as of right now October is open for me. I wanted to give you a TAPS notice, not sure if he was a member (of the Haynsworth Association) or not, but he served with me from 68-70 (on the Haynsworth) and prior to that we served together in Viet Nam. Lemuel B Powell, GM3/c passed away on 2/16/2014, he was from Texas City, TX and was a Retired Galveston Police Officer. Would it be possible to send his widow a copy of the next newsletter, reflecting her husbands name in the TAPS section? Thanks. Keep up the good work. /s/ Brad------

(Editors Comment: Thanks Brad. I reviewed the master list of Haynsworth’s crew and GM3 Powell’s information was not in it. I entered a pen/ink notation in the listing with confidence that you vouched that Lemuel was a Haynsworth crew member. I added his TAPS information to page 2 of this issue and will be sending a print copy of this issue to his wife Janet. A belated regret, that you were unable to join the crew in Baton Rouge. I was looking forward to meeting you.) ********************************************************************************** (Rec’d July 15, 2015 f/ Robert (Bob) Schnapp, RM3/c 10/53-10/54. I look forward to it every time, and read it through and through wishing there were more. I was only aboard the Haynsworth for a year as Radioman third class. I would have made second class but I had a Court Marshall the same day the 2nd class came thru. Bummer!! No matter!! Except for that I enjoyed my time in the Navy and on the 700. P.S. I was 2 years aboard the USS Delong, DE-684, before the Haynsworth but never developed any lasting friendships among the crew of the Delong as I did on the Haynsworth.-----Herb Potter, Joe Perriccio, Bill Lang, and Tom Ball-----were special shipmates to me among many others. (Frank Potter, RDM2/c---44-45 , (Passed away on October 26, 2013) Jim,----I have been remiss in notifying you that my husband Frank D. Potter (44-45) passed away October 26, 2013. Frank served aboard the ship from the beginning and, as I recal he was an original plank owner! He has many pictures from his time on the ship and his Mother (Bless her) saved every letter that he sent home. I am hoping to have them archived with the Veterans History Project. I even still have Frank’s Navy Uniform……what do I do with that!

Several years ago, while visiting family in Maine, we drove down the Maine coast and stopped at the Bath shipyards where there is a fantastic museum. There was a WWII history project at the time and Frank was able to find out what eventually happened to the Haynsworth. (Not long after, his daughter found the ‘Tin Can Sailors’ Web site and from there she found your group.) We then continued down the coast where we met up with Tom Murphy (RDM3/c--44-45) who also served on the ship with Frank. Frank’s daughter also sent some pictures to you which include Tom and Frank. (April 2012, issue 67). One picture of the ship was taken at Pearl Harbor.-----We attended a reunion some years ago when it was held in Kentucky (Fort Mitchell), across the Ohio River from Cincinnati. We met some very nice folks and had a pleasant evening dinner cruise on the river. I am still receiving the newsletter and enjoy reading the mail and the plans for each year’s upcoming reunion. I suppose those days should now come to an end.-----I have enjoyed keeping up with the crew and am so impressed with the friendships with the crew. Take care and happy sailing. Sincerely, //s// Mary Potter (Editors reply: Mary, thank you so much for your letter and the fond memories you and Frank shared of his time aboard the USS Haynsworth. Jim,-----It’s been awhile since I sent you a noteworthy article so I thought the attached photos could fill the void. There has been much dialogue about the collision that occurred during sea exercises off of the Korean coastal waters as part of our Round the World Cruise. Some of the facts bantered about the collision were conflicting. So, maybe these photos can put some of it to rest. The photos, taken by me, were found in my wife’s sewing kit. Don’t ask me how they got there? It has been awhile obviously since the kit was used. Anyway, the dates inscribed on the back of the photos states the Haynsworth was in dry dock #5 in the Yokosuka Naval Yard and was taken on December 27, 1953. The photo of the Ault states she was in dry- dock #5 also and was dated December 24, 1953. These photos show clearly and without question who hit who and where the extent of the damage inflicted to both ships. It is interesting to note the technology of the scaffolding at that time. It was of bamboo and not steel as in the US dry-docks. Also, another tidbit, we lived aboard the ship during repairs so it was not uncommon to interact with the Japanese workers. I remember one memory of how the Japanese workers loved to get sugar from us and mix it with water and how they enjoyed drinking the simple kool aid it produced. Different cultures in action. I am planning on attending the reunion in Niagara Falls and will bring the originals for everyone to see. Thanks for the last newsletter. It’s a great way to keep abreast of shipmates’ happenings. I noticed another shipmate of acquaintance has left us…. I’m referring to Howard Doble. Howard was an enlightening source for much information regarding the Haynsworth history and memories and until the later years was extremely active in our reunions. His many contributions and time will be missed. The ranks are thinning much to fast. Again, Many thanks Jim for all you and Christina do. //s// Joe Perricco ’53- ‘ (Joe’s photos) ************************************************************************************************ USS Haynsworth DD-700 USS AULT DD-698

Hi Jim,-----Two weeks ago I finally had the chance to meet Helen Dyer Richmond, the sister nof John R. Dyer, Jr. RM2/c. (Note; John was KIA April 6, 1945 by attack on USS Haynsworth). Helen had previously sent me letters and documents relating to her brother’s injuries and subsequent death post April 6, 1945 Kamikaze attack. She lives in a town north of Albany NY. While there, I presented her with a draft copy of ‘Phalanx Against a Devine Wind’ as thanks for her generosity. We spent some time discussing John and the USS Haynsworth during the war. During the day we began setting up the two Hospitality Rooms with assistance of the Hotel staff and maintenance personnel. The next day, Wednesday 16 September, crew members, family and friends began arriving at the Hotel, some driving and many arriving on airline flights throughout the day. Registration badges, welcome bags, provided by the Niagara Falls Convention and Visitors Center, were given to all members. The ‘Ships Store’ was open for purchase of a variety of Haynsworth items. (continued on page 10).

RECAP OF THE 2015 NIAGARA FALLS REUNION January 2016 Page 10 continued from page 9 Also, raffle tickets were available to purchase for the ‘REUNION CLOCK’s (3), Haynsworth Hat, Haynsworth License Plate Frame, 50/50, and Navy Jacket. After a busy day of registration, it was time for dinner. Some went out to explore the area and found local eateries to their liking. Others checked out the onsite restaurant, ‘TONY ROMA’s. Following the on your on Dinner, many shipmates and guests returned to the Hospitality rooms for drinks and snacks provided by the Haynsworth. Since the next day was an early departure for our first tour excursion, most everyone retired early. Before departing for our first tour which was a boat ride on the ‘OLD ERIE CANAL’ and ‘LOCK’s 34 and 35, aboard a ‘DUAL PADDLE WHEEL BOAT’, at Lockport, NY. Photo’s below.

About halfway through the trip on the Old Erie Canal a malfunction on the hydraulics which drive the dual paddle wheels caused the starboard wheel to lose hydraulic drive power. This unbalance in drive caused the boat to be un-steerable. Fortunately, a work crew we had just passes shortly before were able to respond to our plight and sent a small Work boat to us which we were able to cast a line to and be towed to the area where they were working. A radio call back to the home port in Lockport was made and another boat was dispatched to our location where we all transferred to the ‘rescue’ boat which then returned us to the point of embarkation. Not long after, our paddle boat returned after repair to the malfunction was corrected. A small rubber seal had failed and after replacement, the paddle wheeler was functional again. Completing the first day’s excursion we had a most wonderful and delicious lunch at the attached restaurant and gift shop. After a delicious luncheon we boarded our busses and headed to ‘Old Fort Niagara’ where we learned quite a bit of the History of the old French Fort and its role in the American Revolution and the War of 1812. ************************************************************************************************** On page 11 is Ft. Niagara’s ‘garrison color’ intended for use on special occasions and during battle. It is one of the oldest surviving US flags and a fine example of the 15 star, 15 stripe flag authorized by Congress in 1795. Dimensions are 24 by 28 feet, the banner might once have been as long as 36 feet. It was acquired by Ft. Niagara in 1994.

Recap of the 2015 Reunion (continued ) January, 2016 (page 13)

The picture on the left shows what was and still is called The ‘French Castle’. In the picture are the three flags that have flown over Fort Niagara. Clearly visible are the flags of the United States and Great Britain. The French flag is on the left and not clearly seen in this photo.

The history of Old Fort Niagara spans more than 300 years. During the colonial wars in North America a fort at the mouth of the Niagara River was vital, for it controlled access to the Great Lakes and the westward route to the heartland of the continent. With the completion of the Erie Canal in 1825, however, the strategic value of Fort Niagara deminished. It none the less remained an active military post well into the 20th century. The three flags flown daily above the parade ground symbolize the nations which have held Fort Niagara. Each competed for the support of a fourth nation; the powerful Iraqois Cofederacy. The French established the first post here, Fort Conti, in 1679. It’s successors, Fort Denonville (1687-1688) was equally short lived. In 1726 France finally erected a permanent fortification with the construction of the impressive ‘French Castle.’ Britain gained control of Fort Niagara in 1759, during the French and Indian War, after a nineteen-day seige. The British held the post throughout the American Revolution but were forced, by the treaty, to yield it to the United States in 1796.Fort Niagara was was recaptured by the British in 1813. It was seded to the United States a second time in 1815 at the end of the war of 1812.----This was Fort Niagara’s last armed conflict and it thereafter served as a peaceful border post. The garrison expanded beyond the walls following the Civil War. Fort Niagara was a barracks and training station for American soldiers throughout both World Wars. The last Army units were withdrawn in 1953. Today, the US Coast Guard represents the only military presence on the site. (Editors note: The above short description of the history of Fort Niagara only scratches the surface. If you are ever in the region of Great Lakes Erie or Ontario, I highly recommend a visit to this historic Fort. The short time we spent there on our first days tour on Thursday, September 17, was not enough time to really get an in-depth understanding of it’s value and impact on our early history. I for one will revisit Old Fort Niagara if possible. ) ************************************************************************************************* 2015 Reunion- Friday 18 September; After returning to our Hotel after our Thursday tours we spent time in our Hospitality Room renewing old friendships and engaging in old sea stories and catching up on our past year since the 2014 reunion in Baton Rouge. Following a good nights sleep and another excellent breakfast at ‘Tony Roma’s, we boardered pur buses for a trip to Buffalo and the Military Park on the waterfront. Upon arrival we boarded a river boat to do a tour of the Buffalo waterfront. Below is the USS Little Rock as seen from our river boat. We will tour her and other ships after lunch.

(Rec’d Jan. 26, 2016 f/ Maxine Jenkins, wife of CS2/c Kenneth J. Jenkins ’51-’54. (D: July 21, 2015) Las Vegas, Nevada Dear James,------I finally got the long awaited news. According to the chart, the (internment) site is a bit South of Norfolk. He (Ken) spent many years going in and out of Hampton Roads and I spent many many years taking Him to and picking him up at the D&S Piers. -----It was a good life! -----Sincerely, //s// Maxine Jenkins (Editors note: Maxine also sent me the following card, and a letter from the CO of the USS Arleigh Burke DDG-51:

In Loving Memory Of K enneth Jenkins Birth May 07, 1929 Death July21, 2015

The sailors life is bold and free, His home is on the rolling sea; And never heart more true or brave Than his who launches on the wave; Afar he speeds in distant climes to roam, With jocund song he rides the sparkling foam.

The tide is flowing with the gale, Y’heave hot My lads, set ev’ry sail; The harbor bar we soon shall clear; Farewell, once more, to home so dear, For when the tempest rages loud and long. That home shall be our guiding star and song.

One of the oldest and most favored of sea-songs, both inside the Service and outside.

Dear Mrs. Jenkins, 1. The remains of your husband, the late Master Chief Fire Technician Kenneth John Jenkins, were committed to the sea as you requested. 2. His remains were brought to the USS Arleigh Burke (DDG 51) on 30 November 2015, while in port Norfolk, Virginia at the direction of Commander Naval Surface Force Atlantic. 3. USS Arleigh Burke departed Norfolk, Virginia at 0830, 07 December 2015, to conduct Sea Trials in preparation to carry out our mission in support of our Nation’s commitment to freedom of the seas. Your husband spent many years in service to his country and it was a fitting choice that he be committed from the deck of a proud ship so employed. 4. The burial at sea ceremony took place on the ship’s flight deck on 09 December 2015 at 0730 in the morning. Conforming to Naval Tradition, the ship was slowed down to baresteerageway, colors displayed at half mast, and the participating Officers and crew were paraded in our Service Dress Blue uniform. The morning was warm with 65 degree temperature and calm seas with no wind. Under these favorable conditions, both the religious and military ceremonies were conducted with dignity and solemnity. I was the military commander of the ceremony. The Executive Officer took resposibility of the Lay Leader and performed the religious service. The committal itself was performed by my Navigator. A seven-member rifle squad and a twelve-member Honor Platoon were formed from the crew of the USS Arleigh Burke. 5. Photographs of the ceremony were taken and are now presented to you. Included in the package are also cartriges from each of the three volleys of the rifle salute and a chart showing the location of the ship at the time of committal. 6. The Officers and crew of USS Arleigh Burke are proud and honored to have had an opportunity to participate in your husband’ committal ceremony. Please accept my personal warm regards and sincerest sympathy in your time of great loss.

Sincerely, //s// T.E. Myers Commander, US Navy Commanding Officer

The following articles arrived after the print newsletter was sent to the printer. Rec’d 6 February f/ Marty Irons. Subject: Update on the book, ‘Phalanx Against a Devine Wind’. Hello All,------Phalanx Against a Devine Wind continues to inch it’s way through the publication process but the editor reports that we should have some more definite news within four weeks. Keep your fingers closed. (Subject: Update on our new web-site: http://www.usshaynsworth.org ) The new site has all the content of the old (but now stagnant) website plus a great deal more. Over the next several months new content and photo’s will be added. (Subject: FACEBOOK) on facebook, I’ve created the USS Haynsworth DD 700 / ROCS Yuen-Yang DDG-905 group. It just ewnt up last week but I’ll be adding content on the anniversary of WWII events. So, it’s thin now but will become robust over the next 12 months. The next big post will be February 10 (tomorrow) when the Fast Carrier Task Force heads to Tokyo for the first raid on the home islands since the Doolittle Raid and February 16 when the Haynsworth takes prisoners on the high seas. So, if you’re a Facebook user, please take a look and add a ‘like’. It makes the books publication more compelling to the press. If you are not on facebook, ask your children or grandchildren to ‘like’. Thanks for all your questions, interest, materials, and encouragement over the last two and a half years! FAIR WINDS AND FOLLOWING SEA’S, Marty P.S. If you’re not familiar with ‘ROCS Yuen-Yang DDG 905, it’s the name given to the Haynsworth by Navy in 1970. The ‘LUCKY’ 700 served another thirty years with them. She was sunk intentionally in 1999 off the coast of Taiwan. Very appropriate, since the teenage crew of the Haynsworth fought its first missions in the waters off Taiwan and the South China Sea in 1945.
