U.S.S. Haynsworth DD-700 Newsletter Issue 69 December 2012 (p-1) Official Newsletter for the USS Haynsworth Reunion Committee TO ALL SHIPMATES, FAMILIES AND FRIENDS; A MERRY CHRISTMAS AND, A HAPPY NEW YEAR 2013 FROM; CHRIS, ME, and the OFFICERS and BOARD MEMBERS of the USS HAYNSWORTH REUNION COMMITTEE. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Another year has passed and we begin to look forward to 2013 and where we will meet again. First though, we reflect on the 2012 reunion held in Albany NY and hosted by Carl and Helen Alesio. We began assembling on Wed. 19 Sept. in preparation for the start of camaraderie and touring on Thursday. The official tour to Cooperstown was cancelled due to insufficient participation but that did not deter the diehard baseball fans from going. We gathered two cars together with volunteers and 10 of us set off to Cooperstown for a great day at the Baseball Hall of Fame. The journey took us through beautiful NY scenery to the surprisingly small village of Cooperstown. All of us had a great time exploring three floors of Baseball history and learning much of the history of Baseball that even the most ardent fans would have been amazed. On returning to our Hotel Albany we re- united with those who stayed back and had an enjoyable evening dinner and spent the evening in camaraderie in our hospitality room. On Friday, 20 Sept. we gathered for a bus trip to Lake George New York for a buffet lunch and entertainment cruise on-board the Cruise ship “Lac de Saint Sacrement” the largest cruise ship sailing Lake George. The weather was perfect and we all enjoyed a superb lunch while enjoying the music entertainment and wonderful scenery. Following the two hour cruise we again boarded our bus for a trip to Saratoga National Historic Park, where a decisive victory in battle, in 1777, kept alive the American Dream of Liberty from England. The following day, Saturday, we boarded an “Albany Trolley” for a short trip to the USS Slater DE-766 moored on the Hudson River for a tour of this WWII destroyer escort still in restoration to it’s former operational state. The “crew” restoring the Slater were very accommodating in allowing us to explore much of the ship except areas still under extensive restoration. The “crew” set up a very impressive set-up for our “Memorial Service” honoring all known DD-700 shipmates who have passed on since our 2011 Reunion in Savannah, Georgia including our shipmates KIA on 4/6/1945 kamikaze attack. Following the tour of the Slater we toured the city of Albany. Continued on p-8 USS Haynsworth Newsletter 12 P-16 December, 2012 USS HAYNSWORTH DD-700 NEWSLETTER James F. Obviously I won the ‘TIN CAN SAILOR’s’ subscription! Thank you very much! I discovered the ticket a couple of days ago when I was looking for something in my wallet. I had forgotten about it. I will surely enjoy it! The Lord blesses me everyday and this is one of today’s blessings! Best regards to you, and Chris too. God Bless! //s// John Sleggs (received 7/24/2012, Woodrow (Freddie) Whitford, ’55-’58 QM3 Baton Rouge, LA) Dear Jim,----Since retiring, my technology is relegated to ‘hard mail’ and phone!! I was pleasantly surprised to see the letter and picture submitted by L. Tucker Grey to the ‘Mail Bag’ (July 2012 issue). I proudly served on the USS Haynsworth DD-700 from 1955 to 1957 after graduating from college. My brother Mike joined me after finishing high school and we had ten great months together on the Haynsworth. After my discharge I entered the field of education and served as a teacher, (9 years), principle (8 years), a Central Office supervisor, (13 years), and retired in 1994. During this time I received a Masters of Education in Administration, and an Education Specialist Degree. I went back to work as a legislative consultant and lobbyist for the LA School Board Assoc. and in 1999 was appointed the Executive Director of the LSBA and served the entire State of Louisiana and was an active member of the National School Board Association. The two years I spent on the Haynsworth taught me maturity, discipline, and leadership skills that led to my success as a professional educator. I retired in 2007 and spent my time with my lovely wife of 59 years, my two children, their spouses & my four grandchildren. Health problems prevent me from attending the reunions but I would love to hear from my former shipmates. Enclosed are my 2012 dues and $10 for a Ships Hat.----Sincerely, //s// Freddie (Whitford) (Ed. Note: Shipmates of Freddie can mail him at: 4906 Summa Court—Baton Rouge, LA 70809-3702 or (225) 766-6347) James,----I don’t believe I sent my dues for 2012. Here it is.---I was surprised to see my picture in the newsletter, (page 11 of 7/12 NL) along with my good friend “BOSH” Boschke. The other guy we are not sure but feel he was Radar or Signal. (Ed. Note: So far no one has identified who he is). For us in the mid-west, the Great Lakes NTC would be great for a reunion. Thanks. //s// Joe Schultz, ’61-’64 BT3/c South Bend, IN [email protected] (Ed. Note: There have been several requests for a reunion in the mid-west. We will try hard to hold the 2014 reunion out there somewhere. Unfortunately, the time is to short for my wife and I to set one up in the mid-west for 2013. Anyone out there in the mid-west region who would like to volunteer to host the 2014 reunion please contact me or any Officer/Board official and I will push for it. Thanks.) ************************************************************************************************* (rec’d 8/15/2012, Chuck (Charles) Stoddard, ’45-’46 SOM3/c Craig, CO) I would like to continue with the ‘hard-copy’ of the newsletter. (I am) pretty much incapacitated and unable to do much more than complain. Whoever said these were the “Golden years” should have their heads examined. But, so long as I’m still percolating I’ll be OK. I wanted to advise you that you can change my Newsletter subscription to e- mail only. Hope it helps save a few bucks.---Perry Cohen RMSn 51-52 ************************************************************************************************ (rec’d 7/16/2012, Captain Wilbur C.
