MAIL BAG (December, 2013) (p-3) (Rec’d June. 26 2013 f/ Marty Irons, (son-in-law of John (Jack) McAllister, RM3 44-46 (D: 11/11/1992). The following e-mail was forwarded to me by our President, Harvey N. Bailey RD3 60-62. Mr. Bailey,------I’m writing a “book” about my father-in-law’s years on the DD700 Haynsworth. RM3 John “Jack” McAllister (1926-1992) was a plank owner and served until Oct’46. He was at Pearl Harbor for additional training and not on board when the hit the Haynsworth. As I understand it, the plane hit the radio shack and several of his buddies were killed instantly. The loss of his friends was an event that haunted him his entire life.----The April 6th attack on the Haynsworth was part of the greatest mass kamikaze attack of all times. Years ago I thought there were posted on your web site several photos of the ship after the impact but I can’t find them now. Can you lead me to these photos and may I use them in my writing?----This book won’t be published professionally. I’m writing it for the benefit of his widow, three daughters, and other interested family members. The more I dig through the more the realization becomes evident of the important role the Haynsworth played on a a much larger stage.------Thank you for any help you can provide.------Regards, Marty Irons Fair Haven, VT (President Harvey Bailey responded on same date).--- Ahoy Marty,---The information you are seeking came from a web site, the shipmate that ran it passed. I tried to find the photos but drew a blank. I went through all the subject areas that I thought they may be but no luck. I have two calls out to shipmates that may be able to help. (I) have sent them a CC of your request. //s// Harvey N. Bailey (Editors reply to Marty: Hello Marty,----Attached are the only 4 photo’s I have of the damage to the Haynsworth from the kamikaze attack on April 6, 1945. I think the reason you could not find them on the www.usshaynsworth.com web site was because those pictures were on a web site belonging to a shipmate that had served aboard Haynsworth at the time of the attack. He has since passed away and his web site, www.uss-haynsworth.com has been taken off line. If you are looking for any additional photo’s, I’m afraid I cannot help. I could possibly find some that were taken before and at the commissioning of the Haynsworth if you are interested). (Received 7/27/2013 from Marty Irons.)---- Jim,--Find enclosed a check to cover dues for membership in the Haynsworth Assoc. I look forward to meeting you in September at the Virginia (Herndon) gathering as well as talking more about my book about the Haynsworth. Regards, Marty. ******************************************************************************************* (Received 7/27/2013 from Paul Felci RD2 56-58 Saugus MA.) Hi Jim,--- Thank you for the Newsletters, they are great and I enjoy them. Sorry that I can’t make this years reunion due to Family commitments. Also, sorry that I totally forgot to send the 2013 dues, my (late) check is enclosed. //s// Haynsworth Shipmate, 56-58, --Paul Felci RD2 ******************************************************************************************* THE FOLLOWING IS AN E-MAIL I SENT TO AN ADDRESS I FOUND WHILE REVIEWING THE “DD700” SHIPMATE REGISTRY ON THE ‘TIN CAN SAILORS’ WEB SITE. I did not recognize it with a crew member that I have in my e-mail address book or in my shipmate mailing address list. (Sent 7/10/2013)

Hello,----My name is Jim Horn. I served aboard the USS Hayynsworth. I also belong to the Tin Can Sailors Association. I was reviewing the crew listing a few days ago and found there was an entry for Clifford, who served aboard in the 1953 era. I am the Newsletter Editor for the USS Haynsworth and I publish a 3X/year newsletter for Haynsworth Shipmates. My mailing list does not contain an address for Clifford and I would very much like to add him to my newsletter distribution list. I see from the entry in the Tin Can sailors that you are the Daughter of Clifford Sr. and Sister of Clifford Jr.). My file of all shipmates that served aboard Haynsworth (3500+) from June 1944 to 1970 shows Clifford J. Dingmon, and also the record shows him being onboard in 1953 but not when he left the ship. It also lists him as a Seaman. Would you please let me know the status of your father and brother. I don’t know which one served aboard Haynsworth. I would be pleased to add him to my Newsletter mailing list so he could get up to date on what his shipmates are doing. Thank you. Sincerely, Jim Horn Editor, USS Haynsworth Newsletter. ************************************************************************ July 10, 2013. The following was received from Kimberly Dingmon.---Hello Mr. Horn: My Father, Clifford Dingmon Sr. was aboard the Haynsworth. He passed away in 1995. My Brother, Clifford Dingmon Jr., served aboard the USS Enterprise, (CVN 65). (Continued on page 4).

If I may ask, would you please let me know the date your Father passed away. At our Annual reunions we hold two Memorial Services to recognize those shipmates, whom we have been made aware of, that have passed away since our previous reunion. I also post that recognition in our Newsletter. This provides shipmate’s who may have served with and known as friends, will know that their shipmate has passed on. This year our formal Memorial will be held in the Chapel at the US Naval Academy, in Annapolis, Maryland, by the Academy Chaplain. Your Father’s name will be included with those others that have passed on since last year’s reunion in Albany, New York. We would appreciate that information very much, Thank You. Dear James,----I have wanted to order a Haynsworth License Plate Frame for a long time and have kept forgetting to order it. I enjoy the Haynsworth Newsletter so much even though I don’t really know many of the men. Just hearing their stories is enough! I am still so proud to have had a father for whom the Happy Haynsworth was named. The Reunions that I did attend were just delightful and I thoroughly enjoyed speaking at one of them. It was one of the most memorable days of my life to be able to celebrate the Haynsworth with you all. I would love to come to another Reunion, but the distance from the West to the East Coast is a bit prohibitive. Retirement is just wonderful. I am busier now than ever before. I don’t know how I ever found time to work! Thank you for your kindness and the great Newsletter. MAIL BAG December 2013 (page 8)

LETTER: The Remembered and the ‘Un-Remembered’ The following letter was written by shipmate Louie Clark, 44-45 SK1/c and posted in the Madison Journal- Today, on Monday, May 30 2011. Dear Editor,------Today my son Jeff replaced my old flag with a new one. He and the family know firsthand how much I appreciate what our flag stands for. The first flag and a tall pole were installed by my brother. Robert, and his wife, Robbie, for my birthday.---- Seeing the newly-flown flag waving in the breeze reminded me of an unforgettable incident in WWII and about two unforgettable shipmates aboard our ship, the USS Haynsworth DD 700. The Haynsworth was a fighting and proud with about 350 men aboard. The day was April 6, 1945. I was drafted, like others, when I was only 18 years old. We had already been in several engagements, including Formosa (now Taiwan), Iwo Jima, Luzon, and several other islands in the Pacific. The Japanese sent about 700 kamikaze (suicide) planes after our Third Fleet which was headed by “Bull” Halsey. We had already shot down one enemy plane when an enemy twin engine plane dived into our bridge killing 12 instantly and wounding many others.---- Our ship lay dead in the water and was on fire from mid-ship forward. The Japanese pilot was killed and thrown out on the deck. Part of the plane that dived onto the bridge went on down into the galley. Everything on the Bridge was gone, including our flag. ---- Even though we were on fire, these two un-remembered shipmates climbed up there and tied the remains of our flag with a small piece of line. They let the enemy know that our flag was still there. Did they receive medals for this heroic act? To my knowledge, no. ---- Three days after we were hit, we were detached and sent to More Island, CA, for repairs. I was honored to be on a flight with two of the three men who raised the flag on Iwo Jima. We sat at the rear of the plane and discussed recent battles. I sat with the sailor, James Bradley, whose son later found his memoir and wrote “Flags of our Fathers,” which was later made into a movie starring clint Eastwood. Ira Hayes, the third one who raised the flag on Iwo Jima, did not make the flight. ---- Seeing the newly-installed flag at our home reminded me that three men were honored by the President and others when they raised the flag on Iwo Jima and rightly so. These three are remembered. The two that raised the flag on the Haynsworth are the un-remembered. They wanted the world to know what the true meaning of our flag stands for and were willing to die for it. I saw them go through the smoke and fire and replace it. Please keep in mind that the present generation in Japan was not involved in the World War II fiasco. We need to pray for them in their suffering and extend help, not hate in their time of need.---- And what can each of us do today?---- The least of all, but most important, is to remember the un-remembered.

Jim,----- As always, the July newsletter was great! Could you forward me a copy of the photo of the ‘piston’ shown in the newsletter?-----Spent this weekend talking to A.C. Pickens sons, AC(jr) and Steve. Great tales were passed from their Dad. I hope to track down a few more families this evening, (Loren Morrissey and Viola Aandahl) as well as Ralph Aakhus. ----Looking forward to the next newsletter. Is there still time to get a letter published in it?-----A salute from this soldier to you on Veteran’s day. Job well done.

For Director: (3 yr. term) – R. Gordon Wolf – 3rd term. Elected: unanimously. Newsletter Editor: (no term limit)) – This is a voluntary versus elected position. Jim Horn: Due to the outstanding job he has done for the last 5 years (agreed by all) was “Volunteered” by acclamation of all hands, save his own. Jim accepted the position.

3: Treasurer’s Report: The Treasurer presented the Interim Financial Report for 6/30/2013 to 9/22/2013. The report showed a balance of $18,636.03 as of 9/22/2013. Some reunion bills ot paid (as of meeting date). Motion: To accept the Treasurer’s Report as presented: Motion carried unanimously.

4: New Business: Jim Horn volunteered to host the 2014 Reunion. Possible locations: Baton Rouge, LA, Niagara Falls, NY, Rapid City, SD; and Battleship Cove, MA was also mentioned at the meeting. Rapid City, SD was all but ruled out because of the extensive walking at Mt. Rushmore and the stamina that it requires. Easy access and little walking are desirable. The possibility of limiting the reunion to 3 days vs. 4 days (less cost) was discussed. It was decided to keep it as is, 4 days.

The president thanked David Oberholzer for his work of sending condolence cards to the bereaved Families of fallen shipmates.

Motion to adjourn the business meeting was made and seconded. Motion carried. President Harvey Bailey adjourned the meeting at 1547.

Respectfully submitted,

David J. Oberholzer, For Jim Murphy - Secretary

*************************************************************************************************************** Our first stop on our touring of the UA Naval Academy was to the beautiful Chapel to hold our annual Memorial Memorial Service in which we honor the memory of our shipmates who gave their lives on that fateful day of April 6, 1945 when the USS HAYNSWORTH was attacked by Kamikaze aircraft in the Battle of Okinawa. Shipmates lost on that day were: MMFn, Barton M. Campbell (OH); GM2, Walter DeLoach (GA); RM3,J.R. Dyer ; RM2, Arthur A. Goyer; SM3, Clifford Hoeb (MO); RM2, B.R. Holiman; SN John F. Knott; SN William R. Kubena; QM3, Joseph P. Lenihan (NY); SN Robert D. Matchat (NY); SN Hobart McLaughlin (ME); and S1/c Earnest W. Satterly (NY). May they rest in PEACE.

Also included in our memorial Service were the eighteen,(18), shipmates, who we were made aware of, as having passed away since our 2012 Reunion. Their passing ranged from 1992 to 2013. Our deepest appreciation goes out to the Staff at the US Naval Academy who were so kind as to provide Navy Chaplain, Commander Cash, an organist and Navy Bugler. Bravo Z.

If any shipmate wishes to subscribe to the TCS and cannot print this, let me know and I will send a application to you.

Dear Shipmates/Family and Friends,-----I have previosly mentioned the “TIN CAN SAILOR” Newspaper and the benefits of subscribing to the TCS newspaper. One benefit I have taken advantage of over the past years is to present my membership card to the admissions office of many “HISTORIC FLEET” ships and Museum sites in our travels around the country over the years. Most sites allow free or highly discounted admission for the member and guest. The newspaper is generaly 40 to 50 pages and full of stories of past and current Navy ships plus many “MAIL BAG” entries from shipmates across the country. A Haynsworth shipmate had a letter published two or three years ago which I published in a Haynsworth Newsletter. There are also opportunities for shipmates or the general public to participate in volunteering for maintenance of ships in the “Historic Fleet” if you happen to live close to one. (I wish I did). So, in closing, I highly recommend this worthwhile newspaper. The extract below was added because I frequently receive inquiries from shipmates looking for information on a friend who served aboard with them, and with my limited resources I cannot provide current information on some. Jim, Editor.

TCS Locator service is a little expensive but you do get your money back if they can’t find your search.

My Fathers experiences, related to us, will forever be imbedded in our minds. The world cruise, the collision with another ship,(USS Ault DD698) during maneuvers and a reconnaissance mission he took part in were some of his memories. He will be dearly missed. //s// Craig Young----(Ed. Note: Glen C. Young was a Seaman and served aboard from 53-55. ) ******************************************************************************** I received this letter from “The Independence Fund” Pensacola Florida. (July 4, 2013) A little background information on this “Fund” is in order. The Independence Fund was established as a non-profit organization to purchase and provide, at no cost, highly mobile “TRAK CHAIRS” to veterans who have suffered loss of limb or limbs to enable them to participate as much as possible in normal activities that we all enjoy. Through the help of Bill O’reilly of Fox News, he commissioned a photograph of all five living presidents and the presidents signed, I think two of the photo’s, which were then auctioned off with the two highest bidders receiving a siged photo by all five presidents. I think the highest bid for one of the two was $10,000.00. O’reilly then had printed copies made available to the public for $25.00. It is to my understanding that to date enough were sold to provide an additional three Trak chairs to wounded veterans. Each at a cost of $15,000.00 each. To this end I purchased a copy for the $25.00 and had it framed. I put it up in the ‘Silent Auction’ at the banquet and it went to Tom Morris, (SFP3 61-63) for $65.00.

July 4, 2013 Dear USS Haynsworth Reunion Committee, On behalf of the Independence Fund, a 501(c )3 non-profit organization, and the many Veterans we support, I wish to thank you for your recent donation in the amount of $25.00. Your donation will assist in funding an ‘Action Track Chair’ for a severly injured Veteran. No goods or services were exchanged. It is the support from people like you that ensures Today’s veterans feel appreciated, not forgotten, ands for this we cannot thank you enough.

We would greatly appreciate your continued support. If you have any questions, concerns, or Care to discuss the ‘Independence Fund’, please call me anytime at (434) 409-0506.

This document was sent to me by Marty Irons with the question as to what type of document it is. As all of you know by now, Marty is writing a book on the WWII years of the USS HAYNSWORTH. This document covers the period of 30 December 1944 to 9 April 1945. The heading appears to be a standard heading for a blank document in that the first entry is an open underlined space. In this document the blank underlined space is filled in with the number 55. It would be of my opinion that ay yeoman out there might have the correct answer. So, we seek the help of shipmates to identify the type document this is and who generater the narrative. Send answers to me, newsletter editor, Thank You.
