SHIPMATES, FAMILY, AND FRIENDS OF THE USS HAYNSWORTH DD-700 REUNION COMMITTEE, WELCOME TO THE 2018 REUNION ISSUE OF THE HAYNSWORTH NEWSLETTER.

The USS HAYNSWORTH, DD-700 Commissioning Pennant has found its Home!

I am pleased to announce to you that the Commissioning Pennant of the USS Haynsworth, DD-700, has now found its permanent home with the family of Commander Haynsworth. After the ‘Haynsworth’, DD-700, reunion in Scranton, PA, (October 4 to 8), I packaged the pennant and shipped it to Commander Haynsworth’s daughter, Linda Haynsworth Kruger in Eagles Point, Oregon. Yesterday, I received an e-mail from Linda. Linda writes: “Hi Jim, I am sending a picture of the commission pennant. I could not hang it in the dining room as the wall was to narrow. Instead, I hung it in the living room where everyone can see it. So far, everyone has commented on its beauty and the wonderful story of my father. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this wonderful gift. Every time I look at it, I shed a tear of joy. I can’t wait for the children and my brother’s family to see it. Thank you so much for sending this piece of my history to us. I will always cherish it. //s// Linda PS, Thank you again so much. Everyone who sees it is so impressed, amazed, and delighted!

See page 4 for correspondence from Linda.

Hinkle, BT3 listed as serving aboard in 1959. Since the picture described on page 10 of the July 2017 newsletter was taken in the 1944 to 1945 period, it cannot be him. Sorry). ******************************************************************* (Rec’d 20 Sept. ’17 from MM3 Ken and ally Fanus [61 to 63], Elizabethtown, PA.) Jim,Chris,------Hope this finds you both well and happy. Sorry to say, we’ll be missing the reunion this year. We were already obligated to a ‘job’ in Idaho cooking for a hunting camo. Dear Mr. Horn,----I regret to inform you that my father, a fellow U.S.S. Haynsworth, DD-700 member, has passed on to heaven. Edwin E. Maugel, August 27, 1924 was 93 and passed away on September 26, 2017. --- Our family and friends have always been very proud of how loving and honorable he was in life here. He was our Hero! How wonderful to meet your sons after hearing about them through the years. We know you’re both so proud as you should be! We especially enjoyed our ‘Mike’ driving so we could be there. He’s really our protector. Next year we are going to make his wife come with us! Again, we can’t thank you enough for putting everything together-----We love you both! (Sherry, we love you and Jack as well.) God Bless Always! //s// Your shipmate and friend, Jack & Sherry Gross ******************************************************************* A ‘TidBit I never knew! WHY?--- Why do ships and aircraft use “May Day” as a call for help—‘Because’--This comes from the French Word m’aidez, meaning, ‘help me’ and, is pronounced approximately as ‘mayday’. Thanks to a HS classmate.

(Rec’d November 5, 2017 f/ LT(jg) Jack, (John) F. Raycroft MD, 1954 to 1957. South Glastonbury, CT) Dear Jim,----I got this Zippo in the Haynsworth Ships Store in ’54 or ’55 as a present for my wife. She stopped smoking soon after so, it didn’t get much use. I don’t know if you have an ‘archive’ of ‘things’. (see page 4) If not, it might be a good idea. I have a few pictures ‘on-board’ from ’54 to ’56. If I send them to you could they be copied and sent back? The newsletter is great. Nice work. //s// Jack Raycroft (Ed. Note: Thank you Jack for sending the Zippo to me. I too purchased one in the ships Store in ’58 but somewhere in the passing years I lost mine. To answer your question about the Haynsworth having an ‘archive of things’, we do not. If it would be agreeable to you, I propose to enter your ‘zippo’ into our next reunion’s “Silent Auction”. As for your pictures, yes, send them to me and I will copy and return to you. I would ask that if you have pictures which include shipmates and you can identify who they are on the back, I would deeply appreciate it. I receive many photo’s and most times, none of the shipmates are identified. Thanks Jack.)

************************************************************ (Rec’d 27 July, 2917 f/ Linda (Haynsworth) Krueger

Dear James,------So good to hear from you. I do so enjoy getting the Haynsworth Newsletters. I gave one of them to my granddaughter to use as part of a family history project she was doing. She was so impressed with her great grandfathers life. Our family is doing well and all are healthy, wealthy and wise…..wealthy and wise are determined by our state of mind…..healthy is quantifiable! (continued after Editors note).

(Editor’s Note: The following portion of Linda’s mail refers to a prior years conversation where-in I informed Linda that our ‘Board of Director’s and Officers’ had passed a resolution to send the ‘Commissioning Pennant of the U.S.S. Haynsworth, DD-700’ to you after we no longer needed it. Since this year’s(2017) Reunion in Scranton, PA had the honor and privilege of having two “Plank Owners’ in attendance, I decided that now was a good time to send it to Commander Haynsworth’s descendant’s.) P.S. The two ‘plank owners’ were: Fire Controlman First Class (FC1/c), and, Signalman Third Class, (SM3/c) John Vasquez. Linda continues: I will be delighted to have the (USS Haynsworth DD-700) Commissioning Pennant and quite honored to have it. I think I will eventually pass it on to my grandson as a part of his heritage. Thank you so much for keeping in touch with me. Give my best to all the wonderful people at this years reunion. //s// Linda Haynsworth-Krueger ***************************************************************** Another ‘Tid Bit of “WHY” Why do men’s clothes have buttons on the right while women’s clothes have buttons on the left? BECAUSE When buttons were invented, they were very expensive and worn primarily by the rich. Since most people are right-handed, it is easier to push buttons on the right through holes on the left. SO! Because wealthy women were dressed by maids, dressmakers put the buttons on the maid’s right! And, that’s where women’s buttons have remained ever since! NOW, DOESN’T THAT INFORMATION MAKE YOUR DAY!! This also comes from a High School Classmate (former Matine). Thanks go to LARRY!

MAIL BAG January, 2018 (page 5)

(Rec’d 21 June, ’17 f/ Terry Van Gilder, Ex ET2/c USS Ault, DD-698. 1955 to 1957. [email protected] (Editors note: I received this from Terry while I was ‘temporarily’ living in a hotel in Philadelphia while Chris, (my wife), was in the hospital. Thanks Terry, I’m sorry I never got to reply back to you.)

James Horn,----Glad to see the Haynsworth crews reuniting once more. I served aboard the USS Ault, (DD- 698), from 1955 to 1957, and saw your ship almost every day for two years. In those days, Division 222 consisted of the only four consecutive hull numbered ‘tin-cans’ operating on the East Coast. Ault, (DD- 698), Waldron, (DD-699), Haynsworth, (DD-700), and John W. weeks (DD-701).

In fact, it was Decembet 1953 when the Haynsworth and Ault collided off KOBE, Japan, and the Ault had a replacement Bow attached in YOKOSUKA, Japan soon thereafter. (Not to dissimilar to the USS Fitzgerald accident in about the same place.) The damage to the Haynsworth is not well documented, but the accident occurred during normal “swing ship operation”, I’m told. (Editors note: The USS Fitzgerald, DDg-52, incident occured with the containership MV ACX- Crystal about 56 nautical miles southwest of Yokosuka. For more detail, search “USS Fitzgerald”. Thanks Terry)

Good Luck and good fortune to all the Haynsworth crews, who attend your reunion. //s// T. Van Gilder, X ET2

***************************************************************** Rec’d This morning f/ DD-700 Webmaster, Anthony (Billy) Barnett (Very sad news), in response to e-mail from Catherine Madcharo, Carl’s step daughter, Subject: The passing of our shipmate, Carl F. Alesio, ME3/c 1947 to 1950, Schenectady, NY. (12/20/2017). Catherine wrote:------Dear Billy,----I wanted to pass along some sad news. My step father, Carl Alesio, suddenly passed away on Wednesday, December 20th. He was surrounded by his wife Helen, and family. Carl was in the Navy and served on the USS Haynsworth. Below is a link to his obituary. I was wondering if you (would) share this with his fellow shipmates. http://www.bowenandparkerbros.com/book_of_memories/3379668/Alesio_Carl/obituary.php If additional information is needed, please let me know. I can be reached at [email protected] Thank you,------Catherine (Billy’s response)------Hello Catherine,-----I’m so very sorry to learn of Carl’s passing. I will miss him. I always enjoyed spending time and talking with Carl at our reunions. Our conversations were always very enjoyable. On behalf of our entire crew, I extend our condolences to you, Helen, and Carl’s entire family and his friends.-----I have forwarded your e-mail to Jim Horn. Jim is currently working on our next newsletter and should be sble to include notification of Carl’s passing in it. I have also updated the USS Haynsworth web page, www.usshaynsworth.org , and updated the ‘Crew Roster’ and ‘TAPS’ Report accordingly. If I can provide any additional assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.-----//s// Regards, Billy Barnett, USS Haynsworth DD700 Webmaster [email protected] ******************************************************************************* Still another‘WY’ I never knew but wondered about for many years. Why do ‘X’s at the end of a letter signify Kisses? -----BECAUSE, in the ‘middle ages’, when many people were unable to read or write, documents were often ‘signed’ using an ‘X’. Kissing the ‘X’ represented an oath to fulfill obligations specified in the document. The ‘X’ and the ‘Kiss’ eventually became synonymous. NOW, YOU ALSO KNOW Thanks for this earth shattering explanation goes to my High School Classmate and former Marine, Larry.

IN MEMORY OF CARL F. ALESIO

Obituary for Carl Alesio 1931 - 2017

SCHENECTADY, NEW YORK-----Carl F. Alesio, 86, entered into eternal life on Wednesday, December 20, 2017 at Ellis Hospital surrounded by his family.

Carl, the son of the late Alexander and Julia (DiCarlo) Alesio, was born in Schenectady on January 2, 1931. He was raised and educated in Schenectady and resided there for much of his life. After High School, Carl enlisted in the US Navy and served his country overseas aboard the USS Haynsworth (DD700) during the . Carl was honorably discharged in 1950 and returned to Schenectady to begin employment in the auto body industry. Eventually, he opened ‘Carl’s Garage and Auto Body Shop’ on Duane Avenue in Schenectady, a business he operated for 58 years before his retirement.

Carl enjoyed watching western movies; sailing out of the Westport Marina on Lake Champlain; loved football and an avid fan of the New England Patriot’s; listening to the radio and enjoying a good cigar. Carl was knowledgeable of World War II and in his earliar years, was considered a very good dancer. Carl enjoyed nothing more than the times spent at home with his family and his grandchildren were a great source of pride for him.

Carl is survived by his loving wife, Helen Asimakis (Karamanlis) Alesio; four step-children; six grandchildren; one brother; one brother-in-law, and one sister-in law. Carl is also survived by several nieces, nephews and cousins as well as many dear and special friends and all of Carl’s USS Haynsworth Shipmates.

********************************************************************************* Editors Comment: Chris and I came to know Carl and Helen in 2005 when we hosted the 2005 Reunion in Norfolk, Virginia. We came to know Carl as a very fun loving guy who always had interesting and sometimes very funny stories to tell. Carl and Helen volunteered to host our 2012 reunion in, Albany, New York. Carl, you will be very missed by all shipmates who had the pleasure to know you. ********************************************************************************** WHY; do people ‘clink’ their ‘glasses before drinking a ‘toast’? BECAUSE; In earlier times, it used to be common for someone to try to kill an enemy by offering him a poisonous drink. To prove to a guest that a drink was ‘safe’, it became customary for a guest to pour a small amount of his drink into the glass of the ‘host’. Both men would drink it simultaneously. When a ‘guest’ trusted his host, he would only touch or ‘clink’ the host’s glass with his own. (Notice; only the male gender is used in this ‘revelation’, BECAUSE, women did not drink in those times. (at least not in public)

WHY; are people in the ‘public eye’ said to be in the ‘limelight’?---BECAUSE; Invented in 1825, limelight was used in lighthouses and theatres by burning a cylinder of lime which produced a brilliant light. In the theatre, a performer ‘in the limelight’ was the Centre of attention. (Aren’t you glad you learned this?!)

USS Haynsworth Newsletter

Editors Commentary Page January, 2018 (page 10) 1.) As many of you know, this past year has been a very difficult time for my wife Chris and for me as it pertains to my duties as Newsletter Editor; Treasurer; and Reunion Planner. I have spent many weeks living in a hotel(s) in Philadelphia during the full months of June and July, in fact, I completed and mailed the July issue from my hotel room in Philadelphia, with my youngest son who came north from Florida to be with his Mother, who helped me to seal and stamp/mail the July issue. Chris has also spent some days/nights in our local Hospital most recently as 8 & 9 January. Chris was flown twice to Phila. by Med-Evac helicopter and once by ambulance. I say this to all of you because it has had a tremendous impact on Haynsworth Reunion Committee. I have concluded that I will not be unable to plan and execute a Reunion this year. Chris is experiencing frequent and at times severe breathing difficulties which cause a trip into the ER at our hospital’. I am very sorry to have to do this but I am not able to leave her for any length of time and she is not able to travel without incurring distress to her pulmonary function. As we all are getting into our ‘Senior Years’ some comments at the 2017 reunion in Scranton by a couple of shipmates commented that even if we just got together at a location for camaraderie would be all that they would like. Just talking and some reminiscing with shipmates and families is a successful reunion. Another thought for anyone who would volunteer to hold the 2018 reunion might be to schedule only one or two tour activities. I would suggest one place that Chris and me participated in a FAM at NewPort News for the USS Gerald R. Ford Commissioning last year. There is much to see in short driving times. So. Please think about volunteering to host this years reunion. Please call or e-mail me if you woul like to discuss with me.

I will commit my full support in whatever capacity I can, should you wish to step-up and host the 2018 Reunion. Thank You.

2.) Two topics were discussed, at the 2017 reunion that I wish to address here.

a.) A topic was raised concerning the frequency of our reunions as they relate to our declining number of attendee’s. After much discussion it was voted and agreed upon, that we would continue to hold annual reunions in lieu of bi- annual reunions. At that time, with no volunteers to host the 2018 reunion, I said that I would do it again. Again, I am sorry that I have to remove myself from that commitment.

b.) The second topic that was raised, by me as Treasurer of the Reunion Committee, was the need to draft a By- Law ‘Article’ to address the Monetary disbursement when the time comes, as it will, to disband the USS Haynsworth Reunion Committee. I cannot, at this time and in this capacity as the Haynsworth’s News Letter Editor, set any policy on this matter. But, I would solicit comments and suggestions from the membership. If any shipmate wishes to express an opinion. I will pass on all comments/suggestions to the President and Board Members of the USS Haynsworth Reunion Committee. What I do want all shipmates to understand is that the organization IS-NOT planning disbandment anytime soon. It is just wise to prepare for a known future event.

3.) Two new members were added to the Committee. MM3/c Wayne P. Swaylik, was elected, as Committee Board Member. MM2/c Raymond C. Lewis, was elected as Secretary. Re-elected as President, was RD3/c Harvey N. Bailey. Re-elected as Treasurer, was RD3/c James F. Horn. Approved for the un-elected position as USS Haynsworth News Letter Editor was Jim Horn. Congratulations go to Ray and Wayne for theur willingness to serve the Haynsworth Organization. ******************************************************************************** Strange things to get your mind off Politics! A Rat can last longer without water than a Camel! A raisin dropped in a glass of fresh champagne will bounce up and down continuously from the bottom of the glass to the top ! (I know some of you are anxious to try this!) A duck’s ‘quack’ doesn’t echo. No one knows why. Donald Duck comics were banned from Finland because he doesn’t wear pants. (Really?) This I did not know, ‘Because metal was so scarce, the ‘OSCARS’ given out during World War II were made of wood. (For all of you who play chess) The number of possible ways of playing the irst four moves per player in a game of chess is: 318,979,564.000. (That’s almost 319 TRILLION!)

Life is like a jar of Jalepeno peppers. What you do today may be a burning issue tomorrow! 2. In the ‘60s, people took LSD to make the World weird. Now the World is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal. 3. All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays NO attention to Criticism. 4. Health Nuts are going to feel stupid someday, laying in a hospital dying of nothing, 5. Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day. Teach a person to use the internet and they won’t bother you for weeks, maybe months, or even years—unless you give them your e-mail address. (I bet you thought I Was going to say ’FISH’ in the line above. (yes you did) 6. Men have two motivations: hunger and hanky-panky. 7. Good Health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die, 8.Life is sexually transmitted. Credit for this is a High School ClassMate and former Marine, Larry S.

More humor from my HS classmate Larry. “God’s Plan for ‘Aging’.”

Most Seniors never get enough exercise; In his wisdom, God decreed that seniors become ‘forgetful’ so they would have to search for their glasses, keys and other things thus during more walking. God looked down and saw that it was good.

Then God saw there was another need. In his wisdom, he made Seniors lose coordination so they would drop things requiring them to bend, reach and, stretch. God looked down and saw that it was good.

Then God considered the function of bladders and decided seniors would have additional calls of ‘nature’ requiring more trips to the bathroom, thus providing, more exercise. God looked down and saw that it was Good.

So – if you find as you age that you are getting up and down more, remember It’s God’s will. It is all in your best interest even though you ‘mutter’ under your breath.
