Bailey RD3 1960 to 1962 SHIPMATES, FAMILY, AND FRIENDS OF THE USS HAYNSWORTH DD-700 REUNION COMMITTEE, WELCOME TO THE 2018 REUNION ISSUE OF THE HAYNSWORTH NEWSLETTER. The USS HAYNSWORTH, DD-700 Commissioning Pennant has found its Home! I am pleased to announce to you that the Commissioning Pennant of the USS Haynsworth, DD-700, has now found its permanent home with the family of Commander Haynsworth. After the ‘Haynsworth’, DD-700, reunion in Scranton, PA, (October 4 to 8), I packaged the pennant and shipped it to Commander Haynsworth’s daughter, Linda Haynsworth Kruger in Eagles Point, Oregon. Yesterday, I received an e-mail from Linda. Linda writes: “Hi Jim, I am sending a picture of the commission pennant. I could not hang it in the dining room as the wall was to narrow. Instead, I hung it in the living room where everyone can see it. So far, everyone has commented on its beauty and the wonderful story of my father. I cannot tell you how much I appreciate this wonderful gift. Every time I look at it, I shed a tear of joy. I can’t wait for the children and my brother’s family to see it. Thank you so much for sending this piece of my history to us. I will always cherish it. //s// Linda PS, Thank you again so much. Everyone who sees it is so impressed, amazed, and delighted! Nagy, 1959 to 1961; Elizabeth, PA) Hi Jim,-----Enclosed is a check for dues and one License Plate Frame, find a good use for the rest. On page 10 of the newsletter, (July, 2017 ?), second picture down, 5th sailor from left, I believe to be A.J. Hinkle, 3rd Class BT., forward boiler room. Keep up the good work.----- //s// Al Nagy, FN 1959 to 1961 (Editor’s note: I checked the master listing of Haynsworth Shipmates and located a A. (Arnold) J. Hinkle, BT3 listed as serving aboard in 1959. Since the picture described on page 10 of the July 2017 newsletter was taken in the 1944 to 1945 period, it cannot be him. Sorry). ******************************************************************* (Rec’d 20 Sept. ’17 from MM3 Ken and ally Fanus [61 to 63], Elizabethtown, PA.) Jim,Chris,------Hope this finds you both well and happy. Sorry to say, we’ll be missing the reunion this year. We were already obligated to a ‘job’ in Idaho cooking for a hunting camo. We’ll be there the entire month of October until near the middle of November.-----Please tell oll of our friends ‘Hi’ and we’re sorry to miss seeing them this year. Hopefully, we’ll be there next year.----Thank you for all of your hard work you do for ‘Haynsworth crew’. Keep up the good work! //s// Ken and Sally Fanus----(Ed. Note: Thank you Sally and Ken. We all did miss you both in Scranton. , Chris and Jim ******************************************************************* (Rec’d from Daughter of SOM3/c Edwin E. Maugel, 1944 to 1945, Farmer, Ohio.) Dear Mr. Horn,----I regret to inform you that my father, a fellow U.S.S. Haynsworth, DD-700 member, has passed on to heaven. Edwin E. Maugel, August 27, 1924 was 93 and passed away on September 26, 2017. --- Our family and friends have always been very proud of how loving and honorable he was in life here. He was our Hero! Being a member of the U>S>S> Haynsworth DD-700 was a very big part of his honorable life.----Thank you for all the Haynsworth Newsletters you sent to him. //s// Daughter ******************************************************************** (Rec’d 20 October, 2017 f/ EM3/c Jack L. and Sherry L. Gross, 1962 to 1964) Oak Grove, MO. ‘Warm thoughts can make the sun a little brighter, the sky a little bluer, the world a little nicer.’ Dear Jim and Chris,-----We can’t tell you how much we enjoyed the Scranton (PA) reunion! How wonderful to meet your sons after hearing about them through the years. We know you’re both so proud as you should be! We especially enjoyed our ‘Mike’ driving so we could be there. He’s really our protector. Next year we are going to make his wife come with us! Again, we can’t thank you enough for putting everything together-----We love you both! (Sherry, we love you and Jack as well.) God Bless Always! //s// Your shipmate and friend, Jack & Sherry Gross ******************************************************************* A ‘TidBit I never knew! WHY?--- Why do ships and aircraft use “May Day” as a call for help—‘Because’--This comes from the French Word m’aidez, meaning, ‘help me’ and, is pronounced approximately as ‘mayday’. Thanks to a HS classmate. USS Haynsworth Newsletter MAIL BAG January, 2018 (page 4) (Rec’d November 5, 2017 f/ LT(jg) Jack, (John) F. Raycroft MD, 1954 to 1957. South Glastonbury, CT) Dear Jim,----I got this Zippo in the Haynsworth Ships Store in ’54 or ’55 as a present for my wife. She stopped smoking soon after so, it didn’t get much use. I don’t know if you have an ‘archive’ of ‘things’. (see page 4) If not, it might be a good idea. I have a few pictures ‘on-board’ from ’54 to ’56. If I send them to you could they be copied and sent back? The newsletter is great. Nice work. //s// Jack Raycroft (Ed. Note: Thank you Jack for sending the Zippo to me. I too purchased one in the ships Store in ’58 but somewhere in the passing years I lost mine. To answer your question about the Haynsworth having an ‘archive of things’, we do not. If it would be agreeable to you, I propose to enter your ‘zippo’ into our next reunion’s “Silent Auction”. As for your pictures, yes, send them to me and I will copy and return to you. I would ask that if you have pictures which include shipmates and you can identify who they are on the back, I would deeply appreciate it. I receive many photo’s and most times, none of the shipmates are identified. Thanks Jack.) ************************************************************ (Rec’d 27 July, 2917 f/ Linda (Haynsworth) Krueger Dear James,---------So good to hear from you. I do so enjoy getting the Haynsworth Newsletters. I gave one of them to my granddaughter to use as part of a family history project she was doing. She was so impressed with her great grandfathers life. Our family is doing well and all are healthy, wealthy and wise…..wealthy and wise are determined by our state of mind…..healthy is quantifiable! (continued after Editors note). (Editor’s Note: The following portion of Linda’s mail refers to a prior years conversation where-in I informed Linda that our ‘Board of Director’s and Officers’ had passed a resolution to send the ‘Commissioning Pennant of the U.S.S. Haynsworth, DD-700’ to you after we no longer needed it.
