Opposition History

A Little about the team.

Originally known as “Western Bay United”, AFC Fury began life in 2001 with a solitary adult men’s football team which played in the Waikato Sunday Soccer League (WSSL), the Club having been declined entry to local affiliated football competition for reasons known best by the then powers that be.

The very first game played by the club in the WSSL was in April 2000 at Maramatanga Park and the team was made up of David’ two sons Delme and Duncan, rugby playing friends of Delme, football friends of David such as former Mt Maunganui National League stalwart Grant Proudman and a man who was playing tennis with his family on the nearby tennis courts who was asked to make up the numbers to the required eleven! The Club went through three name changes before settling on “AFC Fury” (Association Football Club Fury).

Juniors begun in 2000 and in 2005 both juniors and seniors were accepted in to local affiliated football competition.

Player Signings

Papatoetoe AFC is excited to announce the return of former Reds player Imraan Shah back to the club for the 2016 season.

Imraan Shah is another familiar face to the club supporters having made is First Team debut under the guidance of Paul Hillis in 2010, whilst still at high school. Coach Mark Holt knows the ability Shah has; “Imraan is a player that has great feet to work in tight areas and the vision to look up and pick out a pass that puts a team mate in on goal. He has experience and quality that are going to compliment the players around him. A number of the squad spoke about how he can improve our play with various aspects that he brings to our club’.

On signing for Papatoetoe, Shah said, "Coming back to Papatoetoe gives me the opportunity to play with friends I grew up with. Also the confidence Mark has put on me knowing that I have not played for a year and half was enough for me to sign. The potential in the players at the club is enormous. I am looking forward to a competitive season ahead."

Iwa Shaker and Ishtiyaq Shah have also put pen to paper staying loyal to the cause. Shaker made a huge difference coming on board half way through the season from and added valuable goals.

Iwa said on signing, “I have always had a soft spot for Papatoetoe, it's the club I first kicked a ball at and have been though many adventures with for 11 years. I spent a few years away learning and improving my football in the Premier League and ASB Premiership and I feel like I can help the young players coming through now at the club. Last year when I came in we weren't in a very good position on the table, we managed to turn that around and fingers crossed we can push for a much higher finish this year.”

One of the young players Iwa will be helping along the way is youngster Ishtiyaq Shah. He has come through the One Tree Hill College football academy and was signed last year, although has yet to make a NRFL First Team appearance Mark Holt is singing his praises. “Ish is a player who I have seen transform over four years at OTHC, in 2015 I felt having him around a Men’s set up would improve him as a player and prepare him for game time in 2016. So far in preseason he has pushed his case to start weekly and no one can complain with what he has produced over the last month.”

Papatoetoe AFC is pleased to announce the signing of former Reds player Sandip “Sandy” Singh back to the club for the 2016 season.

Sandy Singh is another familiar face to the club supporters having played multiple seasons for the club prior to time away.

Coach Mark Holt is delighted to have been able to attract a player of Singh’s quality back to Murdoch Park. “I have seen him play for a number of seasons and have always made note of his desire to get forward at any opportunity. With Ben Allan leaving for university in Dunedin I knew we had a big whole to fill, but with Sandy we have a ready replacement. His experience will be vital to our squad throughout the season. Sandy has a huge passion to see this club improve and is the type of player who can change a game with a piece of skill or the experience to be in the right place at the right time.”

On signing for the Reds, Singh said, “I have signed for ‘Toey’ as I feel there is a great bunch of guys there that can help the club stay competitive for a number of years, hopefully we can gain promotion to get the club back on track to where it should be. Personally I would like to see myself improving as a player with the great coaching staff we have in place.”

Papatoetoe AFC is pleased to announce the signings of former Reds player Cody Patterson, Manukau City forward Josh Karika and Fencibles Scott Booker to the club for the 2016 season.

Patterson is a familiar face to the club faithful and has scored many a goal for the Reds. In 2015 at Manukau City he scored six league goals, including one in the opening game of the season against Papatoetoe AFC. However coach Mark Holt said it is not just his goal scoring reputation that adds value to the side. “Cody adds experience at a higher level and his aggressive style along with his determination to win is required to compete in this league. He is the type of player that when fully fit can turn a game with his ability to read a situation and make the most of the opportunity. The other thing that can often be forgotten about Cody is his passion for the club and his high regard for it.”

On signing for the Reds, Cody said, “I have a strong desire to see the club go further, we shouldn’t be a Division 2 team. Personally I spent a number of years at the club in the Youth and Men’s section and with the structure in place I am pleased to be back here. This is a massive year for us with the signings Holty has got onboard; it is the start of a new era at Papatoetoe AFC. I am willing to put in the hard yards to see this club get better. I also have an emotional attachment to the club that my father loved so much.”

Cook Islands International forward Josh Karika has also put pen to paper signing for the club from Manukau City. Last season saw Karika in the top five scorers in the league with 13 goals and Holt knows that is something his side requires in 2016. “After seeing Josh play a lot last season I felt he is a player that would fit into Papatoetoe AFC moving forward. I am naturally delighted to bring in one of the divisions leading goal scorers to the club. There has been a lot of interest in Josh so it is great news that he has chosen to join us.”

Josh said on signing for the Reds, “I want to compete for promotion from division 2 and I have ambitions to win the title. I believe Papatoetoe AFC is the best environment to achieve those goals. The coaching staff and the players secured already have the same desire to advance the club. I feel I can contribute a lot to the team, whilst also enjoying my football.”

Former Papatoetoe High School and ex-Fencibles player Scott Booker has also transferred to the club in the offseason. Booker scored goals at this level last term with seven and is keen to reunite with some of his former high school teammates. Holt said on his signing, “Scott is a player I was trying to bring into the club in 2015. He had a great preseason with us scoring plenty of goals and I thought that might get him over the line. It wasn’t to be at the time, however now he has come over I think he will enjoy himself at the club in our environment.”

On signing for Papatoetoe, Scott said “I have come to Papatoetoe AFC because I want to improve my game and with the coaching staff already in place here I believe this is the club to be at. I know a number of the players already and they have been keeping me informed of the changes that have been made since Holty has come to Papatoetoe.”

Papatoetoe AFC is excited to announce the signings of former Eastern Suburbs AFC defenders Eammon O’Brien and Tavis Gravatt for the 2016 season. Both players have played at Northern Premier League level and been involved in Finals. They will bring to Papatoetoe AFC their proven experience, skill and a winning mentality.

Eammon played for Eastern Suburbs under the guidance of Papatoetoe Coach Mark Holt and was a key part in their push for promotion. On signing for the Reds, Eammon said, “I’m looking forward to linking up again with Mark at Papatoetoe AFC. I will be able to bring my experience to the club and pass on my knowledge. Mark is the type of coach who doesn’t leave any stone unturned and will test players to their limits. The way he likes his teams to play football is enjoyable to be part of and players want to give him everything.”

Coach Mark Holt on the signing said, “Eammon is the complete package - an aggressive defender, good in the air, has pace, good distribution with his feet, along with being a good leader and a real personality off the park. I signed him a few games into the season in 2014 and he became part of an impressive defensive unit that lead the side to promotion. I’m wrapped that he has signed for Papatoetoe.”

Tavis also comes from a Northern Premier League background with Three Kings United and Suburbs. He was in the Three Kings United side that unfortunately lost 2-1 to Wellington Olympic in the 2009 Chatham Cup Final. He said on signing for Papatoetoe, “I am looking forward to playing for Papatoetoe AFC, I really enjoyed playing for Mark at Eastern Suburbs. I had been in discussion with Mark a lot about what he was trying to achieve last year and now I feel is a good time to join the club. The type of players he is looking to attract will add value to the club.”

Coach Mark Holt on the signing said, “Tavis is the type of player every side needs. He is a player that keeps everyone’s standards high. He is a listener and learner, if you give Tavis a game plan he will follow it perfectly and have the team on the same page. A lot of time Tavis won’t get the recognition he deserves because he is such a team player.”

On the back of coach Mark Holt signing a new long-term contract at the club, more positive news followed with the 2015 Papatoetoe AFC captain and former Youth midfielder Daniel Menzies is staying at the club.

Coach Mark Holt on the signing said, “I know a number of clubs were chasing Daniel’s services, so to sign him for the coming season is a reflection of his loyalty and also the culture we built over the year. Daniel is not only an outstanding player, but he is a great person. He is mature well beyond his years and the fact he skippered the team for a number of games in 2015, shows his leadership abilities at an age when others are trying to workout where they fit in senior football. He approaches the game in a professional manner, which others feed off. I always tell my young players when they come to a training to see how ‘Menzies’ prepares.

On signing again for the Reds, Daniel said, “As soon as I heard Mark was staying on longer with the club, I wanted to sign. I really enjoy playing and training under him, he is ambitious about what he wants to achieve with Papatoetoe AFC. He is really passionate about the changes that are required to make the club a better environment for not only the First Team, but also the club as a whole. I also feel he is willing to put in the extra work with individual players to see us improve each session.”

Papatoetoe AFC would like to extend a warm welcome to all signings and we look forward to having them on-board for the 2016 season.

ACFC U17 National Tournament

Papatoetoe AFC girls have just completed their best showing (4th place) at the recent ACFC U17 National Tournament held at Western Springs last weekend. Our goal was to be finish in the Top Four before the tournament started, which was a big ask, as we had favourite’s Forrest Hill and last year’s finalists Coast Spirit in our group.

Friday: v Forrest Hill 0 – 0 v Cashmere Tech 2 – 0 (W) Goals: Emma Fletcher, Annabelle Pakieto v Stop Out 3 – 0 (W) Goals: Molly Bryans (2), Emma Fletcher

At the end of the day’s play, we were Top of the Group and were the surprise leaders as no-one had expected us to be there. The girls had played extremely well, and had all the teams talking about us, including the SKY TV crew who were filming a lot of the games.

Saturday: v Coastal Spirit 0 – 1 (L) v Lynn Avon 0 – 0

Finished 2 in the group on goal difference and Semi-final bound with an all Auckland semi-finals.

Sunday: v Three Kings 0 – 7 (L)

This was a game where the bounce of the ball, and final’s pressure unfortunately got to some of the players. Semi- finals are usually tight affairs, and Three Kings managed to nail home every opportunity they had, and were reigning Champs who haven’t had a goal conceded against them at this tournament for two years. v Forrest Hill 0 – 1 (L)

3rd/4th place games are usually an open style of game with plenty of opportunities to score. However this proved the opposite and was a tight game with both teams really only having 1 chance each. Forrest Hill took their chance and we unfortunately didn’t.

Overall, the girls performed exceptionally well and every player learnt, developed and should be proud of their efforts as they worked hard for each other. They have put Papatoetoe on the NZ Footballing map as a potential powerhouse in the near future, and they have a great outlook for next year’s tournament as all but 1 is eligible to play again next year. The coach’s (Andrew, Graeme, Sel and Tim) are all extremely proud to have this group of girls playing for the club this year in the Premier Womens and Premier Womens Reserves team.
