David Owen 3 COACHES COMMENTS Good Afternoon everyone and welcome Murdoch Park for today’s clash against Mangere United Since my last write up we have had a league game and a cup game. Our league game away to arch rivals Manurewa and a Chatham Cup game against Onehunga Mangere. Against Manurewa this was a targeted game. Manurewa not only being a local derby game, they also sat just above us on the table so with this I deemed it as a game to take points from. It was an even tussle with some good football being played by both teams throughout the game and had the possibility to go anyway. Manurewa took two good early chances and as a result of this took a 2-0 lead at halftime. The lads did not give up and tried their best to clinch it back in the second half however Manurewa defended well and as result won the game 2-0. Away to Onehunga Mangere last week we really wanted to get a win here. It is always good to survive the first 1/2 cup rounds and go as far as you can, this is what I hoped for. Things looked good early scoring first through Jamie Clark. 1-1 at halftime with Onehunga Mangere reduced to 10 men we really wanted to take control of the game. However Onehunga Mangere managed to take two more goals and win 3-1 knocking us put of the cup. To today’s game and back on home turf we will be pushing and doing all we can to pick up points on offer. Mangere United will be a battle however I am confident the lads can do all they can to get a decent result at home. See you all afterwards in the bar. Paul Margison (Margee) 4 Reserve team Hello everyone, and welcome Mangere United to Murdoch Park. Since the last programme we have had a couple of games which have shown to us the potential that we believe the team has. Starting with an away game to Manurewa where the guys took the lead with 2 good goals before defending a recovery by Manurewa to win 2-1. I think they showed true heart in holding off a strong late attack to claim our first win of the season, and in front of the stand at Memorial Park. Last week, in a cup game against Mt Albert-Ponsonby, although we showed a lot of promise, possibly let ourselves down from the start when we started with just ten players for about the first ten minutes. Down 1 nil at half time, we came back in the second half, scoring early and pressuring them constantly. The guys attacked the goal on many occasions, and I thought it was only a matter of time before we scored. We dominated in possession, defence and fitness. I think this bodes well for the future, if we can maintain this sort of football for the rest of the season. However, the more mature Mt Albert-Ponsonby side decided that they probably couldn’t score, so held us off for the penalty shoot-out, which, through determination, and putting their bodies on the line, they did. When they left the club, they looked like the walking wounded. Unfortunately, we put ourselves under pressure early in the shoot-out, missing out on our first two attempts, and although we put the next three away, we could only stop one going in. I am hoping that today we will see some of the football we have shown in the last couple of weeks, and with the belief that we are a good side, we can compete with any team in our division. All it will take is to learn from these last two weeks. Mickey Paea / Roland Coysh 5 Junior report Papatoetoe AFC is an inclusive family oriented club that values the diversity of our community and is committed to providing a player and coaching pathway from grassroots through to the elite level. Our Junior Programme is well established now with our 5th and 6th graders involved in 'First Kicks' and our 7th and 8th Graders participating in 'Fun Football' as part of New Zealand Football's 'Whole of Football Plan' (WoFP). This allows us to provide an age appropriate introduction to the game for over 200 junior players at Papatoetoe AFC. This early involvement in the sport has a huge impact on the youngsters’ enjoyment levels, and is proven to help retain players as they get older and progress through the ranks. One of our objectives for developing women’s football at Papatoetoe AFC is to introduce female only youth teams through the 13th, 15th, and 17th Grades. This will help to create a clear transition for our female players so that they can join as four year olds, and play all the way through to adulthood with the same club. A key strategy to implement this pathway is to have senior players helping to coach our junior and youth teams, and two of our NRFL Premier Women’s team-members are doing just that. Chelsea Strickland and Tayla Hetherington are currently coaching the ‘First Kicks’ programme for our 5th and 6th Grade teams. We asked the girls to tell us how they have found the experience so far. Chelsea: It has been great fun working with the four, five, and six year olds. The number of eager children who turn up to training is impressive, not to mention game day where the number of Papatoetoe AFC children and parents seem to triple the turnout of any of the other clubs. I have taken on the responsibility of coaching the ‘First Kicks’ group to strengthen our support in the community and also encourage children to love football from an early age. With many boys and girls of different ethnicities and ages willing to learn and gain new skills, it has been a real pleasure and a rewarding experience to be involved in. The rest of the year looks promising with more and more children registering, and the numbers are increasing each week. 6 Tayla: I chose to coach the 5th Grade as a way of giving back to Papatoetoe AFC for the support they gave me as a young footballer. Having played as a junior at Papatoetoe AFC , I personally know where I would like to help the youngsters develop their skills as I did growing up at the club. Also with the football knowledge I've gained over the years, I am able to share it with the kids to help influence their love for the game. I've found coaching easy to slide into, as coming from a family of seven I'm used to absolute chaos! Grabbing the kids’ attention and making them smile and laugh is gratifying and reinforces how important it is to give back. It’s been a really positive experience with the parents always smiling and encouraging the kids to get out and do it. I am really enjoying it all and I'm sure it will help me achieve my goal of becoming an early childhood teacher.
