Sheets: tips + tricks: -my rule of thumb is 300-500 thread count; anything above that is hard to tell a true difference, 500 is my favorite!
-I usually opt for solid colors because they come in higher quality options and are more versatile over many years. I love white because you can bleach them and keep them looking brand new and there’s just something about crisp white sheets.
-if you have a memory foam or thicker matress you may need extra deep sheets to fit properly (Charter Club listed below has a deep option!)
-tuck in your sheets all the way around and fold down a 12-18 inch section at the top (then tuck in the edges of that too). You don’t have to do any special folding on the corners because we will eventually be covering those up, but if you want to, there are a ton of tutorials on Pinterest. where to shop: Macy’s, Target, Pottery Barn are my go-tos. Take advantage of Macy’s sales/coupons to get good deals on bedding basics and stock up then. my favorites: Charter Club from Macy’s | Target Threshold brand 300 thread count (fitted sheet and pillowcases sold separately) | Pottery Barn 350 thread count | Target Threshold brand 500 thread count | Target Casaluna Supima Sateen 500 thread count
Bed Pillows: tips + tricks: -usually your sheet set will come with pillowcases you can use for your bed pillows -we each have a memory foam pillow, then just a regular pillow, but you can do any combination you choose.
-I like to do 2 bed pillows on each side, stacked flat, with shams and decorative pillows leaning in front. where to shop: for inserts, Amazon or Macy’s; for special memory foam pillows, check out your favorite mattress store (I’ve always loved Tempurpedic pillows).
Quilts/ Coverlets: tips + tricks: -add this on top of your sheet and fold down at the top -tuck your sheets and quilt in all the way around for a clean look
-have fun by adding in a new texture, pattern, or color, with this piece.
-you can also adjust the warmth of your bed greatly by what weight quilt you choose (if you or your partner are a hot sleeper, you can definitely do a light-weight option here). where to shop: Target, Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, Pottery Barn my favorites: Target Casaluna quilted cashmere quilt | Target Chambray Linen blend quilt | Target Casaluna Heavyweight linen blend quilt | Target Nate Berkus Striped Matelasse Coverlet (on my bed) | Target Threshold channel velvet quilt | Target Opalhouse velvet tufted quilt | Target Nate Berkus washed linen blend quilt | Target Geostitch Nate Berkus quilt | Target Herringbone Flannel Quilt | Target Yarn Dye Striped Quilt Duvet / Comforter: tips + tricks: -I always prefer a duvet and down comforter insert especially if you want that extra cozy, more expensive look (often a regular comforter is going to look/feel cheap in person, so definitely be careful buying online- I have linked a good comforter set option below!).
-the duvet is just a cover for the insert (usually down but you can also get down alternative). You can choose your preferred weight, warmth for the down comforter (usually the warmer/heavier is more expensive).
-Like with sheets, I love a solid, simple down comforter. I don’t think you can ever go wrong with white here too.
-Duvets are especially good for pet owners because they are easy to take off and clean when you need to at home. Most comforters are too bulky for a washing machine and need to be dry-cleaned or taken to the laundry mat.
-I have started ordering all my down comforters/inserts on Amazon only. They have much lower prices for the quality you get (linking the one I used on our bed below, but be sure to read reviews before ordering others!). Target also has some good basic options too. where to shop: Macy’s, Pottery Barn, Amazon, Target my favorites-duvets/comforters: Pottery Barn belgian flax linen duvet cover (what I have) | Target solid basic duvet + sham set | Target Threshold linen blend duvet | Target washed linen duvet | Target Casaluna heavyweight linen duvet set | Target Casaluna heavyweight linen comforter set | H&M washed linen duvet set | Target border stitch flannel duvet | Target solid velvet duvet my favorites-down comforter inserts: Target down comforter option | Target Casaluna down comforter option | My down comforter from Amazon
Pillow Shams: tips + tricks: -often there will be matching/coordinating pillow sham options to go with your comforter or duvet! -choose from European (large square style) or Standard (rectangular style). You want to fill the width of your bed so use 2-3 shams to fill it depending on the size.
-place shams in the back, leaning right in front of your bed pillows.
-buy down inserts for a more high-end look and feel. Always be sure to buy one size up in inserts so they fill the sham completely!
-these are the inserts I used for mine; all different sizes available on Amazon just search and be sure to read reviews! where to shop: Pottery Barn, Target, Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters my favorites: My anthropolgoie pillow shams here | Pottery Barn belgian flax sham (what I have) | Pottery Barn heathered velvet shams | Pottery Barn essential sham | Pottery Barn pick-stitch sham | Target plain classic solid shams | Target Geostitch shams | Target channel stitch velvet sham | Target heavyweight linen blend sham | Target washed linen blend sham | Target Opalhouse velvet tufted sham | Target herringbone flannel sham | Target oversized reversible jacquard sham | Target Casaluna heavyweight linen blend sham | Target Casaluna cashmere blend quilted sham
Throw Pillows: tips + tricks: -have fun with mixing colors, patterns, and textures here! -usually you can design your entire bedding scheme around a single pillow, if you want to choose one piece to fall in love with and inspire the rest of the design- this is it!
-typically I do 1-2 sets of 2 matching pillows then a long lumbar style pillow in front (could also do a bolster pillow too); there’s lots of flexibility with this though so definitely buy extra and try out different combinations before deciding!
-don’t be afraid to mix lots of textures! That’s what makes a bed extra cozy: velvets, knits, linens, cottons, etc. -just like your shams, if your pillow covers have zippers/are removable- invest some extra in upgrading to down inserts if they don’t already have them. You can search on Amazon for any size you need and often can find a larger pack for a good price! where to shop: Target, Anthropologie, Pottery Barn, Urban Outfitters, Homegoods/ TJMaxx/ Marshall’s, H&M, The Woven Nook my favorites: too too many to choose from! It really depends on your style here as you can do any kind of throw pillow combination! Definitely buy 2-4 extra so you can play around with arrangements and combinations. My throw pillows: velvet from Paxton Home, striped from the Woven Nook, lumbar pillow from Target (linked here).
Throw Blanket: tips + tricks: -especially if you have a king bed, make sure your throw is long enough to cover most of the length going across
-you can choose a more relaxed, thrown-on look where to shop: Target, Anthropologie, Urban Outfitters, Homegoods/ TJMaxx/ Marshall’s my favorites: Target Casaluna chunky knit bed blanket | Target Casaluna oversized knit blanket | Target faux fur oversized throw blanket | Target Hearth and Hand chunky fringe throw | Target Hearth and Hand throw blanket with tassels | Target Threshold stripe bed blanket | Target Project 62 textured faux fur blanket A Note about Bedskirts: tips + tricks: -avoid ruffled bedskirts unless you are doing a super girly/romantic space, they typically will end up looking juvenile and cheap in the wrong space
-opt for a simple tailored bedskirt or relaxed linen (usually white but you can also do another neutral)
-check the height of your bed before ordering to make sure it is long enough!
-you may want to use velcro or command strips to hold it in place so it doesn’t move or get crooked over time!
-you can also just do a solid fitted sheet around your box spring if you aren’t needing to hide a metal bed frame (or if you had something more like a platform bed) where to shop: Amazon, Target, H&M my favorites: Target Casaluna linen blend bedskirt | H&M washed linen bedskirt | Amazon basic tailored bedskirt | Target basic bedskirt
