Samuel and Susan Johns Glover

First Generation

1. Susan Johns, daughter of Richard Johns and Elizabeth Inch, was born on 31 Dec 1844 in West 1 2 Putford, , and died on 14 Oct 1912 in Gravesend, Kent, England at age 67.

Although the family sampler pictured on the previous page shows Susan’s birth as 31 December 1845, the baptismal record pictured above showed the baptism date as Jan 19, 1845, so it seems that her birth year was actually 1844.

3  1861 Census: Susan, age 16, living with parents at Volehouse, , Devon. 4  1871 Census: Home of John Martin, Stratton, Cornwall. Susan working as a domestic servant along with her sister Sophia. 8  Susan married Samuel Glover, on 1 Oct 1874 in West Putford, Devon, England. Samuel was born 9 in 1837 in , Devon, England, died in Feb 1882 in Sutcombe, Devon, England at age 45. His parentage is undetermined, as no birth record has been found. The earliest record of Samuel seems to be the 1841 census, when he was 4 years old, living with William Glover, age 85, in Sutcombe, Devon.

In 1860, Samuel, age 23, married Eliza Mason (nee Allin), a widow 12 years his senior, mother of six children. Eliza’s first husband, William Mason, was inn keeper of New Inn, Sutcombe. Samuel became inn keeper upon his marriage to Eliza. Samuel and Eliza became the parents of Elizabeth, b. 1860, Alice, b. 1862, James, b.1864 and Mary Jane, b. 1866. Eliza died in August 1869 and is buried in St. Andrews Churchyard, Sutcombe.

Samuel’s marriage to Susan in 1874 was noted in the Journal 8 October 1874, p.8:

3 F ii. Ethel Mary Glover was born circa 1878 in Sutcomb, Devon, England and died in 1963 at age 85.

4 4 M iii. Frederick Glover was born circa 1880 in Sutcombe, Devon, England.

 1881 Census: The family was living at New Inn Public House, Sutcombe, where Samuel, age 44, was the innkeeper. Wife Susan was 33, and the children were James, 17 (son of Samuel and Eliza Mason), Rosa, 6; Ethel, 2; and Frederick, 11 months. 2  1882: Death of Samuel Glover in Feb 1882 in Sutcombe, Devon, England at age 45, and was buried on 24 Feb 1882 in Sutcombe, Devon, England. By 1890, Susan was back in Stratton, Cornwall, working as proprietor at the Globe Hotel, where she had lived before her marriage. A notice was published in the Western Times newspaper 6 December 1890 to the effect that a license was granted to Mrs. Susan Glover to keep the Globe Hotel, Bude, as an inn, in succession to Frederick Thorn. Frederick Thorn was married to her sister, Sophia. 5  1891 Census: Susan, age 47, proprietor of Globe Hotel, 1891, Bude, Cornwall, England. Susan’s household included her daughter Rosa, age 16; Arthur Johns, 14, servant; Charles Thorn, nephew, age 10, scholar. Daughter Ethel and son Frederick were both living with relatives elsewhere. (see below) Also living in Bude, and listed on the same census page, was Susan’s brother, Daniel and his family. 6  1901 Census: Susan, age 55 (sic), lodging house keeper, Bude, Cornwall, England. Living with son Frederick, age 20, stable proprietor. Two visitors were listed on the census: Bertha Moore, visitor, age 18, b. , Devon; and Fanny Moore, visitor, widow, age 46, b. Dorset Whitchurch. It is not known if there is a connection with these Moores to Susan’s sister, Emma Moore  1911 Census: Susan, retired publican, living with sister Emma's family, 9 Breakwater Rd.,Bude, 7 Cornwall, England.

 1912: Susan died 14 Oct 1912. At the time of her death, she was living at 55 Kent Rd, Gravesend, Kent (home of her daughter, Ethel Mary Poole) and her will was probated at London 18 November 1912. From the National Probate Calendar Listing: "Glover, Susan, widow, to Rosa Maud Ellicott widow and Ethel May Poole (wife of Henry Gibson Poole). Effects £155 0s 6d."

Susan was reportedly buried at St. Andrews Churchyard, Sutcombe.

Second and Third Generations

1 13 2. Rosa Maud Glover (Susan ) was born in 1875 in Sutcombe, Devon, England and was buried in Wentworth, ON, Canada.

Noted events in her life: 17  1897: Rosa married Oliver Davey in 1897 (4th quarter) in Bristol, Gloucestershire, England. Oliver 18 was born in 1863 and died on 11 Jul 1898 in Bude, Cornwall, England at age 35.

The child from this marriage was:

19 F i. Olive Ethel Mary Davey was born on 5 Feb 1898 in Bude, Cornwall, England and was buried in Hamilton, Wentworth, ON, Canada. Olive married James Mann on 20 4 Apr 1918 in Galt, Waterloo, Ontario.

Oliver Davey passed away after less than one year of marriage. Oliver’s will was probated 27 Aug 1898; his estate was left to Rosa Maud Davey widow. Effects £72 ((National (England & Wales, National Probate Calendar)  1901 Census: Rosa Davey, 26, head, widow, Lodging house keeper, own account, Bude, 16 Cornwall, England. Living with sister Ethel and daughter Olive Davey, age 3.

22  1903: Rosa next married William Prust Ellacott in Torrington, Devon, England. William was born in 23 24 1868 in Hartland, Devon, England and died on 20 Dec 1903 in Torrington, Devon, England at age 35. This marriage was also very brief; the marriage occurred in the 4th quarter of 1903, and William’s death was December 20. William was married first in 1891 to Maria Franklin. Maria died following childbirth in August, 1898. Their newborn daughter also died. William was living at 24 Fairholme Rd, West Kensington, Middlesex, and working as a stock broker until shortly before his marriage to Rosa. Below is the notation from the National Probate Calendar.  

Rosa inherited £1488, which would be worth a little over $200,000 in today’s dollars.

25  1914: Rosa next married Frederick Charles Ruthven on 15 Apr 1914 in Bermondsey, London, 26 27 England. Frederick was born in 1871 in Camberwell, London, England and died in Mar 1947 in Lambeth, London, England at age 76.

Frederick was the son of Thomas Ruthven, a tailor. His first marriage to Isabella Jane Panock produced at least 5 children. When Frederick married Rosa, he was a 43 year old widower, residing in Maltby, and she was a 39 year old widow.

28 F i. Helen Alice Ruthven was born in 1915 in Greenwich, London, England.

Noted events in her life were:  1924: Emigrated to Ontario at age 9 with her mother. No further records found in Ontario.  1957: Helen married Joseph Carl Pezzolanella on 28 Sep 1957 in San Francisco, 31 32 California, USA. Joseph was born on 8 Mar 1892 in Italy, and had emigrated first to Montreal in 1910, and then to Utica, NY in 1911, where other family members were living. Joseph moved to San Francisco sometime after 1923, and in California he worked as a barber. Joseph had been married once previously; and possibly had two children from his first marriage.

32  1957: Joseph Pezzolanella died less than 2 months after his marriage to Helen; 32 15 Nov 1957 in San Francisco, California, USA at age 65, and was buried in Colma, San Mateo County, California. 29  1958: Helen departed from Honolulu, 10 Apr 1958. Nationality was listed as “Canadian”, home address 799 29th Ave, San Francisco.

 1963: Helen applied for naturalized citizenship Apr 1963, District Court of Northern 30 California.

 1918 – 1922: the Frederick Ruthven family is listed in the London Electoral Register, living at 17 Windmill Lane, Chelsea/Deptford.

 1924: Leaving her husband in England, Rosa and her daughter Helen, age 9, emigrated to Canada. Rosa’s daughter Olive Davey had moved to Ontario in 1911, and had married there. Rosa and Helen sailed from Southampton on the ship Melita on 16 September 1924. Arriving at Montreal, Rosa listed her marital status as “separated” and her intended occupation as “housework”. She declared her intent to reside permanently in Canada, and to live with her married daughter in Hamilton, Ontario. (Canada, Ocean Arrivals, 1919-1924) The only further records found of Rosa Ruthven in Ontario were:  The 1935 Voter List for Hamilton, where Rosa is living at 347 ½ East Barton, and working as a waitress

1 3. Ethel Mary Glover (Susan ) was born circa 1878 in Sutcomb, Devon, England and died in Jun 1963 14 in Worth Valley, Yorkshire West Riding, England at age 85. Noted events in her life were: 33  1891 Census: Ethel, age 12, niece, scholar, , Devon, in the household of Richard W. Bond, widower, age 49, farmer. Ethel was listed on the census as “niece”, but it isn’t clear how she was related to Richard Bond. Matilda Johns, her aunt, was listed as housekeeper, and John Walter, widower, age 74, uncle of head, was also living there.

 1901 Census: Ethel, age 22, living with widowed sister, Rosa Davey, lodging house keeper, and her niece, Olive, age 3. Bude, Cornwall

 1903: Ethel married Henry Gibson Poole in 3rd quarter 1903 in St. Giles, London, 34 England. Henry was born in Feb 1870 in 35 Bridgewater, Somerset, England and died in 1931 in Hull, Yorkshire, England at age 61. Henry was the son of Edward Henry Poole and Lydia Chapman. Henry had served in the military between 1888 and 1893, first in the 4th battalion

Devonshire Regiment, and later in the Royal Irish Lancers. (Source: British Army Service Records,

“medical student”.  1912: Mother Susan Glover died when living with Ethel at 55 Kent rd, Gravesend, Kent.  1913: Kelly's Directory: Poole, Henry Gibson, 55 Kent road, Kent  1915: Henry served in WWI as a captain in the British Army, and was awarded a medal for his service at Gallipoli.  1924: Address given by sister Rosa on her immigration papers: 92 Queen Street, Hull, (Yorkshire)

Henry reportedly died in 1931 at age 61, Hull, Yorkshire.

Ethel died in June 1963 at age 85, Worth Valley, Yorkshire West Riding. (England & Wales Death Index)

36 Emmeline married Charles Edward Henderson in 1934 in Hull, Yorkshire, England. 37 Charles was born in 1908 in Gateshead, Durham, England, died on 10 Dec 1945 in 38 India at age 37, and was buried in Madras, India. National Probate Calendar: "Henderson, Charles Edward of 20 Heather Lea-avenue Dore Sheffield died 10 December 1945 on war service Administration Wakefield 18 March 1946 to Emeline Lucy Henderson widow. Effects £1245 5s 8d."

F iv. Evelyn Nora Poole was born on 9 Mar 1907 in Gravesend, Kent, 39 40 England and died in Mar 1978 in Wakefield, Yorkshire, England at age 71.

41 Evelyn married Richard L. Cole in 1933 in Hull, Yorkshire, England. Richard was born in 1907 in Hull, Yorkshire, England.

M v. Geoffrey Henry G. Poole was born on 5 Jan 1915 in Bristol, 42 Gloucestershire, England and died in Apr 1986 in Waltham Forest, London, 43 England at age 71.

Noted events in his life:  1891 Census: Frederick was living at Moore Cottage, Woolfardisworthy, with his aunt Elizabeth Harding, uncle Joslin Harding, and Elizabeth Johns, his grandmother, age  1903: Frederick married Florence Emma Dike. Florence was born in 1875 in Cirencester, 44 Gloucestershire, England, daughter of James and Sarah Dike.  1911 Census: Frederick and Florence were living at 1 Shandy St, Stepney East, London, and the family included Frederick, age 7; Lily Doreen, age 2 1/2; and baby son, 1 month. Lily Dike, Florence’s sister, age 31, also lived with the family. Frederick was working as a “horse
