Daarom is die onderwerp oor verhoudings so belangrik vir my. At the end of a term I usually reflect with one question in mind: What could I have done better? Since 80% of my work en- tails conflict management, my mind automatically thinks of various meetings and situations. The foundation for every meeting is the acknowledgement of the relationship that exists. Once that is cemented in the discussion with a huge amount of mutual respect, a sustainable solution will follow. It is general knowledge that if one of the parties in a conflict situation is vindictive and has a vendetta with ulterior motives, the relationship will crumble. As in the previous Tieroog, I want to emphasize the fact that I am willing to address difficult issues and will respect all the roll players in the education environment. I wish all our learners well on this short holiday. I especially want to wish our Grade 12 learners well on their preparation for their final exam. I would like to thank all staff members and parents for their contribution to the education of our children. ///// ////////////////////////// TIEROOG | KWARTAAL 3/ TERM 3 | SEPTEMBER 2019 \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ 2 ///// Before we focus on term 3, just a quick flashback to the results of term 2: Hier is ons top-10 akademiese presteerders per graad: GRAAD 8 / GRADE 8 GRAAD 9 / GRADE 9 1 JANA VAN DER WATT 89.8 1 ANDREA CUPIDO 90.2 2 ZOE SLAMAT 88.2 2 MEECAH PETERSEN 90.0 3 SONIQUE ESTERHUIZEN 86.4 3 CORNéL VAN LILL 89.3 4 LISA THOMAS 85.4 4 ARNO RALL 87.4 5 ETHAN PILLAY 84.7 5 SHANZELLE SING 84.2 6 GABRIELLE TCHOUANANG SEMEGNI 83.3 5 ELZANNE VAN RENSBURG 84.2 7 NARCISSA BONGIMA 83.2 7 DADE JASON 84.1 8 ALMARI VAN DER MERWE 83.0 8 NEHEMIAH BROWN 84.0 9 TIFFANY KOEN 82.4 8 GHADIJA JAKOET 84.0 ………………………… 10 KRISTIN VAN TONDER 81.4 10 CATHLENE SMITH 82.3 ………………………… GRAAD 10 / GRADE 10 GRAAD 11 1 CELINA BAUERMEESTER 93.3 1 CARA VAN DER COLFF 96.3 ………………………… 2 RICHARD VISAGIE 87.6 2 NATANJA UYS 88.8 ………………………… 3 MEGAN MANGIAGALLI 87.3 3 CHARLIZE LUYT 87.6 4 GABRIELLE LOUW 84.1 4 ELZANNé SWART 86.6 ………………………… 5 VIRGIL LUDIK 83.8 5 DARYN LIEBENBERG 83.8 6 JESSICA KOCH 81.5 6 KAIDAN THERON 81.1 ………………………… 7 JESSICA PEDERSEN 81.3 7 LENE-MARI BROWN 80.8 ………………………… 8 MARVELLOUS MAHLANGU 79.3 8 TYLO RAS 75.8 9 AIMEE POTGIETER 79.0 9 HANO GROENEWALD 74.5 10 MONIQUE VISSER 78.5 10 CHRISTIAAN ROODE 73.8 GRAAD 12 1 DANELLE KEOWN 86.8 2 CHARL HENDRIKS 84.5 3 LISA STANFORD 84.0 4 ANéL THOMPSON 83.5 5 CARLIE SOLOMON 81.0 6 KYLA-DAWN GALANOS 79.1 7 CHRISTOPH DYKMAN 78.3 8 MARIANKA VAN EEDEN 77.8 9 JAN HENDRIK DYKMAN 76.5 10 TAYLA KING 76.5 ////////////////////////// TIEROOG | KWARTAAL 3/ TERM 3 | SEPTEMBER 2019 \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ 3 ///// Baie geluk aan al ons top-presteerders, hul ouers en onderwysers. Continue persuing excellence! Let asseblief op die volgende belangrike datums: 9 Oktober: Prestige-aand 10 Oktober: Uitstapaand 11 Oktober: Eindeksamenadministrasie The rest of the learners will receive their report cards on Friday, 4 October. Parents and learners should analyse this report card and focus on preparing for the final exams. The final exam counts for 60% of the Grade 8 and 9 learner’s promotion mark. For grades 10-12 it contributes a whopping 75%! Please use this final opportunity to prevent disappointment at the end of the year. Most of our daily disciplinary problems origin seem to be the use of cell phones at prohibited times and areas. Although we all live in a new era, the constant occupation of learners’ attention by cell phones are not conducive to learning. “Internet addiction has some behavioral similarities to hard drug use,” says Antoine Bechara, psychology professor and neuroscientist at the USC (https://news.usc.edu/trojan-family/are-smartphones-as-addictive-as-drugs/). Some studies even compare it to addiction to cocaine (https:// www.promisesbehavioralhealth.com/addiction-recovery-blog/new-studies- compare-smartphones-cocaine-addiction/). Learners also use social media to victimize others. Please use cellphones for positive, educational purposes. Parents must empower themselves and help the school to educate learners in the responsible use of the cyber space. “Forest restoration is one of the most effective strategies to fight climate change.” . ////////////////////////// TIEROOG | KWARTAAL 3/ TERM 3 | SEPTEMBER 2019 \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\ 4 ///// Carlie Solomon en Sasha Kriel het vandag deelgeneem aan Metro-Noord se Graad 12 Taal- en spelkompetisie en goed gevaar. 30 March2017 Dear Parent/Guardian NEWSLETTER 9/17 We have reached the end of a highly successful term. So much has been achieved and we have big dreams and plans for the remainder of the year. Allow me this opportunity to thank every dedicated educator, coach and learner for their hard work and commitment. It is wonderful to see the scale of participation and the level at which we are competing now. Sport and culture have gone from strength to strength. Add to that the excellent academic results we attained last year, and you have to agree that our school is blessed with exceptional learners, educators and parents. During a recent visit by the Curro Transformation and Diversity team, we were complimented on the friendliness of our learners and staff. They noticed how learners went out of their way to greet them and to assist where they could. We also often get compliments from visitors, who work with our learners, regarding their ability to think out of the box and come up with new ideas and solutions. Schools close on Friday, 31 March at 11:00. Reports will be issued to learners on this day. Term 2 starts on Wednesday, 19 April. Educators already start on Tuesday, 18 April. Enjoy a well-deserved break with your children. May God keep you safe and may you experience a blessed Easter. STAFF MATTERS We wish to congratulate Mr Christiaan Botha who attended the North-West University of Potchefstroom’s graduation ceremony to receive his Bachelor’s Degree in Education (BEd). Congratulations to Mrs Mariëtte Viljoen whose daughter, Obie, had a baby girl earlier this week.

  • The Settlers High School
The Settlers High School Term 3 Newsletter 2019 MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL "Do what you have to do until you can do what you want to do.” – Oprah Winfrey Dear Settlers Family Last weekend I attended the Allan Gray Orbis Foundation (AGOF) Circle of Excellence Principals’ Conference in Durban. This is not an ordinary conference - it is by special invitation only, to schools recognised by the AGOF as one of the top schools in South Africa. To belong in this closed circle of schools, the school has to consistently provide them with candidates for their prestigious Allan Gray Bursary Fellowship which is a gruelling process. At the conference awards function, The Settlers was awarded a trophy recognising us as the top school in South Africa, producing the most AGOF Fellowships since its inception 11 years ago. This is an achievement to be proud of. I wish to thank AGOF Fellows from The Settlers and our teachers for living the ethos of the school and making this prestigious accolade possible. Next year we will be one of the first co-ed placement schools (meaning some Allan Gray scholarship learners will be placed at our school instead of the traditional single sex schools they normally opt for). The reason for this according to the AGOF is that we must be doing something right here at The Settlers, to have produced so many excellent candidates and fellows. The schools response to Gender Based Violence and Stop The Violence campaign was noble, but not a solution. Our actions must not stop after a special assembly, making a cross on the field, wearing a purple ribbon and taking a pledge to denounce violence, it needs to continue into the future beyond this term.

STAFF MATTERS We have to greet one of our educators, Mrs Anette Rossouw. She has worked tirelessly with her Mathematics learners and was always busy with extra lessons and support. We appreciate the time and effort she has put in. We know that our Matrics are well prepared for their coming exams.
