Dustbins A strange topic for a church magazine but we do need some assistance with our church and church hall multi coloured bins. The new council time table for emptying the bins now means that the green bin is emptied differently to the church bins. We are looking for a willing volunteer to become our minister for bins and to take responsibility of ensuring that correct bins are put out on Wednesday Evening for emptying the following day. I am sure that someone will feel that they can assist with this task. Please contact me or the Churchwardens, its a simple but vital task if we want to keep our grounds tidy.

Heating The recent cold weather has forcibly drawn attention to the need for a volunteer in another area of our church life as we also require a person who feels that their ministry is in keeping our congregations warm. With the Church building in use at different times of day and for a variety of purposes we need someone to take charge of the central heating clock to ensure that times are adjusted to ensure that the heating comes on at the right time prior to the building being used. Instruction on how to set the timer will be given and the person volunteering for this vital task will receive notification of the events which are to take place. You will be a very popular member of our team which does consist of very many volunteers here at St Thomas.

Letter from Jan

As I write this letter, we are just into Advent and looking forward to celebrating Jesus coming to live amongst us. Advent, a time for reflection, preparation for what we know is to come. Advent, the beginning of the churches year when we can put behind us what has been and move forward to what is to come.

As this letter is read, we are at the start of a new calendar year. We are stepping into the unknown. A time of political uncertainty across the world. A time of change within our church. What we do know is whatever changes take place, our mighty God is with us guiding us through whatever lies ahead. So, if it’s our personal circumstances which change, we can be sure that our Lord has paved the way for those changes and he will walk beside us throughout. Similarly, if its changes within our church which we face then as long as we keep our eyes firmly on him and are guided by what he wants, then once again we can be confident that God has gone ahead to prepare the way and once again promises to walk alongside us as we venture into the unknown.

6 St. Thomas and St. Luke’s Church Magazine January 2018

Letter from Jan

An old Irish saying is; Don’t walk in front of me, I may not follow, Don’t walk behind me, I may not lead, Just walk beside me and be my friend. I prefer the biblical version: I know the Lord is always with me. I will not be shaken For He is right beside me.

Psalm 16:8

Which reminds us that whatever lies ahead, whatever exciting, challenging, wonderful, or traumatic times we have in store, our heavenly father has trodden the path before us, and he walks beside us wherever our life journey takes us.

As we move forward into 2018, let us do so in confidence, safe in the knowledge that in Christ we are never alone and that God has prepared the way for us.

Jan Cornthwaite

Verses for the Year

Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. Isaiah 43:1b

I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. Philippians 3:14

As again there are no Branch Meetings in January we can however look forward to our belated Christmas meal for members and friends at Bryn Masonic Hall on Friday 19th January meeting at 7.00pm for 7.30pm. I look forward to seeing everyone there and if you haven’t done so already please let me have the £20.00 cost of the meal and your menu choice no later than 7th January.

I am sorry to say that once again our first magazine of the 2018 starts the year with the very sad news with regarding the loss of one of our members Joan Hanson who died on the 16th November. Joan had been a member for almost 30 years and was regularly in attendance at our meetings. She also helped at our Brunches particularly with the tombola stall. Our deepest sympathy is with her family and friends.

Advance Notice Saturday 17th February is our Brunch in the Church Hall from 11.00am to 1.00pm. We will be having our usual raffle, cake stall and tombola. as always we do rely on contributions from our members which are greatly appreciated.

Wednesday 21st February in St THOMAS CHURCH HALL our Annual General Meeting starting at 7.30pm. This meeting is open to everyone and there is no better opportunity for anyone interested in the possibility of joining the Mothers Union of finding out more about the organisation and in particular the work of our branch. You

can discover exactly what we do both here at St Thomas and in the Deanery, the Diocese and overseas.

Once again a great big thank you to everyone who provided Christmas Presents for the residents at Coops Foyer. They were very welcome and as always very much appreciated.

Grant, 0 Lord, that as the years change, we may find rest in your unchanging love. May we meet this new year bravely, sure in the faith that while people come and go, and life changes around us, you are ever the same, guiding us with your wisdom and protecting us with your love; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Wishing you a healthy and happy New Year Love and God bless

Barbara

Robert Carson's Film Report- January 2018 Movie Reviews

Justice League (12A) Directed by Zach Snyder Stars: Ben Affleck, Gal Gadot, Henry Cavill, Ezra Miller, Ray Fisher, Jason Momoa, Amy Adams, Diane Lane, Ciaran Hinds, , Joe Morton, Amber Heard, Connie Nielsen, and J.K. Simmons In a Nutshell: Well, in all of these things, all roads must lead to this eventually... like Marvel and it's Avengers bounty and also their Defendors success on TV too, DC has decided that it must now combine all its characters to make a super team, but does it gel and flow and work well or clunk like a clunky clunker? Well a lovely gooey mix of it all to be truly and honestly fair, it does tend to clunk a lot... a lot actually but when it does work it's rather charming and fun and does what it needs to satisfy it's core group, but whereas Avengers was one of the finest movies of it's kind and The Defendors show on Netflix is rather good and quite solid and very strong, this is just... fine, simply yeah it's alright nothing special. Don't get me wrong, your principal cast is top notch and all giving exactly what is needed... whether it's a very dependable Affleck, the cheeky and Fun Miller as Flash, the lovely Gadot as Wonder Woman or a flash of some charm as Cavill finally has some fun in the Superman role... but the whole thing still winds up as squishy mess... from unfinished effects and bad CGI effects and a terrible villain through to a mixed feeling and attitude to setting up character and relationships, essentially what you have is something that has too many cooks spoiling it's own broth and while it has these pros and solid stuff that keep it with a solid score, it is essentially a mess and it really is certainly not going to sway those who still are very down on DC but will keep those young and old DC fans happy all the same... match these with a huge sense of fun and a very solid cast throughout you have a movie that may be big and flawed, but pulls off that exact quality with a smattering of aplomb.... after all, who always needs to be perfect? Rating: 7/10 Also Seen: Paddington II (PG) 9/10 Battle of the Sexes (12A) 9/10 Daddy's Home II (12A) 7/10 Murder on the Orient Express (12A) 7/10 Better Watch Out! 8/10 30 St. Thomas and St. Luke’s Church Magazine January 2018

The Top 18 for 2018 18. Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (12A TBA) (Released: June 8th) Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard return as Juan Antonio Bayona takes the reins for this follow up to the 2015 behemoth, plot details are still under wraps but expect plenty more action but plenty more heart too if A Monster Calls is any hint of where this may head… 17. Bohemian Rhapsody (15 TBA) (Released: December 28th) Finally, the story of the one of the greatest rock bands there ever was hits the big screen, with Mr Robots' Rami Malek portraying the legendary Freddie Mercury, with an as yet undecided director and a lesser known cast portraying the band Queen themselves... except an exceptional story that is so crazy it happens to be true 12. Mission Impossible Six (12A TBA) (Released: July 27th) Not a lot is known about what Tom Cruise and co will be getting up to this time round, but if previous form tells us anything.... it'll be death defying, gravity laws breaking and one heck of a

10. Deadpool II (15 TBA) (Released: June 1st) Ryan Reynolds is back back back as the Merc with the Mouth in this highly anticipated sequel to 2016's underdog superhero gem.... expect more insane meta madness and just plenty of making fun of everything superhero movies stand for, this time including sequels and the MCU with Josh Brolin taking on double villain duties in the MCU by starring here as Cable whilst appearing elsewhere as Thanos 9. Black Panther (12A TBA) (Released: February 16th) Marvel's next movie and the one that leads straight into Infinity War sees Chadwick Boseman take center stage as the titular superhero, the king of Wakanda as he defends his throne from various nefarious figures... not least the always welcome Andy Serkis on villainous form and sharing scenes with Martin Freeman as Wakanda's US Ambassador Everett Ross, my precious..... 8. Isle of Dogs (PG TBA) (Released: March 30th) Wes Anderson's latest stop motion animation is set in a future Japan where a young boy goes in search of his missing dog and winds up crash landing on the infamous Isle of Dogs, an island where all the dogs have been sent. A stellar voice cast as always includes Bryan Cranston, Scarlett Johannsen, Edward Norton, Jeff Goldblum, Greta Gerwig, Bill Murray, F. Murray Abraham and . 7. Wreck it Ralph II (PG) (Released: November 30th) Ralph and Princess Vanelope take to the internet for this ground breaking sequel to the 2013 smash hit , which will feature amongst others, a cast of every Disney princess that ever was and more. 6. The Shape of Water (15) (Released: February 16th) Director Guillermo del Toro, easily one of the most visionary and talented filmmakers there ever was, returns to the more personal project that birthed films such as Pan's Labyrinth and Cronos with his fantasy romance that involves Sally Hawkins becoming entangled in a friendship or is it something more with what is essentially the creature from the black lagoon.... expect something poignant, beautiful and a complete

32 St. Thomas and St. Luke’s Church Magazine January 2018

masterwork as ever there was, could it finally be time for fantasy movies to get awards recognition? 5. Ant Man and the Wasp (12A TBA) (Released: August 3rd) Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas return as Scott Lang and Hank Pym for this wacky sequel as Michelle Pfieffer joins the fun as Hanks' long lost wife Janet Pym aka The Wasp. Expect more hi-jinks, action and big and small fun. 4. Mary Poppins Returns (PG TBA) (Released: December 21st) The world's most beloved nanny returns next Christmas as Emily Blunt steps into the role of Mary Poppins for this highly anticipated sequel to the cherished classic with , Colin Firth and Lin Manuel Miranda joining in the magic for what should be a unique and beautiful family spectacle. 3. The Avengers: Infinity War (12A TBA) (Released: April 27th) The MCU and the story so far all come full circle as Josh Brolins' Thanos comes to Earth to rule and the whole roster of Marvel heroes must stop him, from Iron Man to the Guardians of the Galaxy via Spidey and Dr Strange.... all the stories in all the movies have led to this moment, one very very big pay off. 2. Ready Player One (12A TBA) (Released: March 30th) Steven Spielberg takes the reins for this incredible take on Ernest Clines' fantastic futuristic tale of virtual reality, 80s pop culture and fantastical action as a young teenage takes on a challenge left by an eccentric computer designer who loved the 80s... he must race against time to win the prize and save the future.
