Iranian Women's Quest for Self-Liberation Through
IRANIAN WOMEN’S QUEST FOR SELF-LIBERATION THROUGH THE INTERNET AND SOCIAL MEDIA: AN EMANCIPATORY PEDAGOGY TANNAZ ZARGARIAN A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN EDUCATION YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO December 2019 © [Tannaz Zargarian, 2019] i Abstract This dissertation examines the discourse of body autonomy among Iranian women. It approaches the discourse of body autonomy by deconstructing veiling, public mobility, and sexuality, while considering the impact of society, history, religion, and culture. Although there are many important scholarly works on Iranian women and human rights that explore women’s civil rights and freedom of individuality in relation to the hijab, family law, and sexuality, the absence of work on the discourse of body autonomy—the most fundamental human right—has created a deficiency in the field. My research examines the discourse of body autonomy in the context of liberation among Iranian women while also assessing the role of the internet as informal emancipatory educational tools. To explore the discourse of body autonomy, I draw upon critical and transnational feminist theory and the theoretical frameworks of Derayeh, Foucault, Shahidian, Bayat, Mauss, and Freire. Additionally, in-depth semi-structured interviews with Iranian women aged 26 to 42 in Iran support my analysis of the practice and understanding of body autonomy personally, on the internet, and social media. The results identify and explicate some of the major factors affecting the practice and awareness of body autonomy, particularly in relation to the goal of liberation for Iranian women. -

THE STRONGHOLD Directed by Cédric Jimenez INTERNATIONAL MARKETING INTERNATIONAL PUBLICITY Alba OHRESSER Margaux AUDOUIN [email protected] [email protected] 1 SYNOPSIS Marseille’s north suburbs hold the record of France’s highest crime rate. Greg, Yass and Antoine’s police brigade faces strong pressure from their bosses to improve their arrest and drug seizure stats. In this high-risk environment, where the law of the jungle reigns, it can often be hard to say who’s the hunter and who’s the prey. When assigned a high-profile operation, the team engages in a mission where moral and professional boundaries are pushed to their breaking point. 2 INTERVIEW WITH CEDRIC JIMENEZ What inspired you to make this film? In 2012, the scandal of the BAC [Anti-Crime Brigade] Nord affair broke out all over the press. It was difficult to escape it, especially for me being from Marseille. I Quickly became interested in it, especially since I know the northern neighbourhoods well having grown up there. There was such a media show that I felt the need to know what had happened. How far had these cops taken the law into their own hands? But for that, it was necessary to have access to the police and to the files. That was obviously impossible. When we decided to work together, me and Hugo [Sélignac], my producer, I always had this affair in mind. It was then that he said to me, “Wait, I know someone in Marseille who could introduce us to the real cops involved.” And that’s what happened. -

Bertrand Tavernier's Coup De Torchon
N AHEM Y OUSAF A Southern Sheriff’s Revenge: Bertrand Tavernier’s Coup de Torchon This essay traces the story of a Texan small-town sheriff as first told and reworked by the American pulp fiction writer Jim Thompson in The Killer Inside Me (1952) and Pop. 1280 (1964), and transformed by French film director Bertrand Tavernier when he transposes this par- ticular ‘Southern’ sheriff’s story to colonial Senegal in 1938 in Coup de Torchon (Clean Slate, 1980). To begin, this essay considers why Thompson shifts his story from the American ‘West’ in the 1950s to the American ‘South’ in the 1960s before examining in some detail the ways in which Tavernier’s cross-cultural and trans-generic remake of Pop. 1280 successfully interrogates southern tropes in non-southern settings. The image of the Southern sheriff in twentieth-century fiction and film accrued mainly negative connotations, by focusing on the stakes sheriffs had in white supremacy and in maintaining a segregated sta- tus quo, or exploring their limited efforts to move beyond being either ineffectual or corrupt – or both. In novels such as Erskine Caldwell’s Trouble in July (1940) and Elizabeth Spencer’s The Voice at the Back Door (1956), for example, the small-town sheriff is mired in a moral dilemma. Spencer created Mississippi sheriff Duncan Harper while living in Italy. Thrust into office by the dying incumbent, he struggles against racist crimes that have been ignored in the past, the repercus- sions of which threaten the present. He dies having made a racially liberal plea to the town that after his death may choose to deem him merely eccentric. -

This hardcover is signed by James Lee Burke. Read more Murphy Doucet. A story from an alleged pimp corroborates a suspect, Murphy Doucet Bernard Hocke who, with his partner Twinkie Lemoyne Ned Beattyare responsible for the death of DeWitt Prejean, the skeleton found in the swamp. The defining moment of Burke's themes justice and heroism occurs at the end of the novel when Robicheaux sheds the constraints of his badge and takes matters into his own hands, going quite beyond the law, destroying the bad guys sure, but destroying them illegally. Namespaces Article Talk. I loved Will Patten's narration. The plot started out intriguing but quickly bogged down in a mishmash of interwoven stories—some of them supernatural but none of them terribly plausible—that the author picked up and dropped at random. Being a Civil War buff, I was intrigued with Robicheaux's encounters with Civil War General John Hood in the watery, bug and snake infested backwaters while searching for said remains of the black man. The best written Robicheaux so far, and that is a huge compliment in itself as the series is known for its silky prose. I liked it better than the book. -
